Though trans women of color, such as Laverne Cox and Janet Mock, are more visible in mainstream media than ever before, mainstream media still largely depicts trans people through white constructs of what it means to be trans, namely medicalized binary transitions. -

At the same time, there are clear differences between the Nordic countries regarding their national images. The purpose of this study is to a examine the relationship between ideas of the Nordic and national images through a qualitative study of brand manifestations on Nordic web portals for foreign visitors. Design/methodology/approach – The two guiding research questions are: How do Nordic branding strategies and national stereotypes impact on nation-branding content toward visitors in the Nordic region? What traces of the Nordic as a supranational concept can be found when the Nordic is translated into concrete national brand manifestations? The analysis focuses on brand manifestations such as brand visions, codes of expression, differentiation, narrative identity and ideologies. -
A Film by Chris Moukarbel and Valerie Veatch Me @The Zoo a Film by Chris Moukarbel and Valerie Veatch
ME @THE ZOO A FILM BY CHRIS MOUKARBEL AND VALERIE VEATCH ME @THE ZOO A FILM BY CHRIS MOUKARBEL AND VALERIE VEATCH ME @THE ZOO tells the story of Chris Crocker, a video blogger from a small town in Tennessee. Crocker is part of the first generation of kids raised on the Internet, coming of age under constant self- surveillance. His online videos, including the infamous YouTube declaration “Leave Britney Alone!”– have been viewed hundreds of millions of times and have created a worldwide phenomenon. This portrait weaves a tapestry of Internet media with reactions from Crocker fans and haters to examine a new controversial kind of fame: the Internet folk hero. ACQUIRED BY HBO (USA) AND BBC (UK) DIRECTOR’S WORD Like so many others, we first discovered Chris Crocker by being sent early online videos such as “Bitch Please” and “This or That”. The first question we asked was apparently a common one. “Is this real?” Years later we began making a film that asked the same question in a more general sense. We began a documentary about the history and impact of reality televi- sion. As ideas of consciousness shift in lockstep with new technology, “Reality” has become the dominant medium. Our film research took us around the world. We interviewed everyone from the cast of the original Dutch reality show, Hollywood executives and even a Reality TV School. In the end, this hunt for reality brought us to a small town in Tennessee and to Chris Crocker. Crocker was raised in the age of reality where anyone with a camera can become a star. -

Unintentional Dialogues on YouTube 1 Running Head: UNINTENTIONAL DIALOGUES ON YOUTUBE Unintentional Dialogues on YouTube RESEV 554: Semester Project Analysis Memo Laura Bestler Iowa State University December 15, 2008 Unintentional Dialogues on YouTube 2 Introduction The purpose of this video is to illustrate themes within the online user commentary reacting to Chris Crocker’s (2008) YouTube video titled, “Gay HATE on YouTube!” The central question of this study is how users intermittently engage about Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Questioning (LGTBQQ) topics represented on YouTube. The unintentional dialogues between users on YouTube™ are providing additional knowledge to what is happening within today’s society (Noblit, Flores, & Murillo, 2004). Online social networks are a natural place to employ post modern theory due to its playfulness, reflexivity, and the deconstruction of the cyber world (Noblit, Flores, & Murillo, 2004). The research findings demonstrate a connection between time and negative user reactions towards LGBTQQ topics. Why Online? An evolution of the online world has taken place to provide everyone the ability to create content. Social networks provided a way people to connect with friends, family and online social acquaintances. Similar to the offline world, user created content had begun to utilize hate language and expletives to describe people. These degrading interactions provided a catalyst for me to take action. This online social laboratory can be brought to light, deconstructed and transcended. Therefore, helping people understand their actions are broader than snippet commented online. These unintentional dialogues are broadcast around the world. The internet is an environment where people’s small gestures may become large, and it is a mirror or lens of the world around them (Popkin, 2008). -

So You've Been Musically Shamed
WILLIAM CHENG Dartmouth College Email: [email protected] So You’ve Been Musically Shamed ABSTRACT In July 2014, an anonymous source leaked the raw audio of Britney Spears’s confessional ballad “Alien.” Haters pounced on this star’s denuded voice, gleefully seizing on the viral artifact as a smoking gun for Spears’s deficits and for the pop industry’s artistic fakeries more broadly. My paper situates this flashpoint of Spears-shaming within late-capitalist archives of public humiliation, cyberleaks, and the paternalistic scrutiny of women’s bodies and voices. KEYWORDS: critical theory, media studies, popular music A marketplace has emerged where public humiliation is a commodity and shame is an industry. How is the money made? Clicks. The more shame, the more clicks. – monica lewinsky1 “Poor Britney Spears” is not the beginning of a sentence you hear often uttered in my household. – tony hoagland, “poor britney spears,” beginning of the poem2 In the summer of 2014, the internet sprang a musical leak. Suddenly circulating on YouTube was a video featuring the allegedly raw, non-Auto-Tuned sounds of Brit- 3 ney Spears singing her new album track “Alien.” Spears’s voice in this recording was noticeably off-key and off-kilter, like some abject artifact meant to be overwritten, for- gotten, abandoned on the cutting room floor. In the video’s comment threads, view- ers’ strident pronouncements of aching ears and melting brains swirled in a chorus of mockery. Haters pounced on the star’s denuded voice and offered it as airtight 1.
