In aesthetic philosophy, Western tradition of cognitive (rational) philo- sophical thought and perception form the two parts of the higher and lower faculties. The classical division of mind and body divorces the physical sense from knowledge of the world (consciousness). The transfer of aes- thetics into an autonomous philosophy of beauty or art begins in the eigh- teenth century. With the study of aesthetic experience as a separate realm of understanding, the body once again becomes a source of inquiry. The initial step is taken by Alexander Baumgarten, who unfurls a theory of perceptional cognition that translates the precepts of rational philosophy into the attributes that contribute to poetic perfection—the aesthetic. In his Reflections on Poetry (1735), Baumgarten cuts a path from perception to beauty, and restores aesthetic experience to the body. Baumgarten’s dis- tinction that aesthetic experience is distinct from moral value departs from eighteenth-century theories of sensibility, particularly moral philosophy in England, which reached into the public sphere through the writings of Anthony Ashley Cooper, Third Earl of Shaftesbury and Francis Hutcheson at the beginning of the century. Immanuel Kant develops the discussion of aesthetic experience further. He moves from the perception of the thing to the effects on the individual. In the Critique of Pure Reason (1781), Kant proposes that knowledge of the world (consciousness) is indiscern- ible as external phenomena. Consciousness is an intuitive process by which sense impressions are measured and judged. Thus, perception is a faculty of the subjective instrument, a self-perpetuating reference. This philosophi- cal idealism lies behind aesthetic judgments, giving rise to the troublesome issues of aesthetic standards and normative values. Alexander Baumgarten, Reflections on Poetry, trans.     WHAT REMAINS HISTORY AND LOCATIONS OF WORLD FAIRS This is a chronological list of exhibitions and fairs held throughout the world that gained international attention. A few regional fairs are included if they were significant to the author or for showcasing emerging technology. This list is a compilation from various sources, trying to respect the capitalization traditions from the countries of origin. When controversy arises about the date or name of a fair (should the 1849 fair held in Birmingham, United Kingdom be referred to as “Exhibition of Industrial Arts and Manufacturers” or “Exposition of British Society”) a choice has been made so the checklist remains an index of fairs. Brown text indicates that the fair occurred before the Bureau international des expositions (BIE) on November 22, 1928 or was not sanctioned by them.     Grand Opéra door David Vergauwen Lezing gehouden op 18 mei tijdens de 31e WGN studiedag in Mennorode 1. Grand Opéra 1.1. Grand Opéra: het genre “Grand Opéra” was in de negentiende eeuw geen genrebeschrijvende term. De term wordt tegenwoordig verbonden met de Parijse burgeropera van de negentiende eeuw, maar de term is ouder dan dat. Het woord Grand Opéra duikt immers al op in de achttiende eeuw. De Franse letterkundige Pierre Nougaret (1715-1780) bedoelde er alle gezongen opera’s in de Académie Royal de la musique mee. Deze werden enkel binnen dit instituut gecreëerd en werden gezongen van begin tot einde. In de brede zin van het woord betekent Grand Opéra elke ernstige Franse opera met enige spektakelwaarde die van begin tot einde wordt gezongen. Sinds W. Crosten (French Grand Opéra: An Art and a business) in 1948 zijn monografie over de Grand Opéra publiceerde, werd deze term geijkt voor een zeer specifiek genre binnen de Franse operageschiedenis. Vanaf dan gebruikt men de term in strikte zin uitsluitend voor de opera’s uit de negentiende eeuw die voldoen aan vijf kenmerken, die in de verdere bespreking binnen dit hoofdstuk zullen verduidelijkt worden: 1) de opera is doorgecomponeerd van begin tot eind (geen dialogen!) 2) de opera werd gecreëerd of gedragen door het instituut van de Opéra 3) de opera kent een episch verloop in vijf bedrijven 4) de opera wordt opgesmukt met voldoende koren en balletten 5) de opera behandelt sociaal-historische thema’s vanuit realistisch oogpunt Dit laatste kenmerk is in vergelijking met de achttiende-eeuwse Tragédie lyrique of de zeventiende- eeuwse Tragédie en musique een cruciaal element.
