Margaret Edgar is beautiful, clever – and an expert thief. Her crimes and her hatred of men are the result of a deep-rooted neurosis which wealthy publisher Mark Rutland is determined to unravel. Discovering her criminal activities, he forces her into a loveless marriage and sets about investigating her mysterious past. The results are even more terrifying than they both imagine. Screenplay by Jay Presson Allen, based on the 1961 novel by WINSTON GRAHAM. Director: Alfred Hitchcock. The film was screened on BBC One or Two thrice in the seventies, thrice in the eighties and four times in the nineties – that's ten showings in all.
