Introduction
Umrah is one of the key comprehensive and real economic development factors in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Umrah has become the key factor of overall flow of special financial resources; including its benefits of global cultural sharing and effectively stimulating economic activity. As well, Umrah is one of the key pillars of the Kingdom’s 2030 Vision; seeking to secure about (30) million Umrah performers by 2030. As such, this would yield huge revenues. In fact, the Kingdom enjoys a strategic location among the world’s continents; thus, offering seamless access to over
1.2 billion Muslims seeking to perform Umrah. This, in turn, would lead to an economic recovery in various fields, including airports and seaports’ development and expansion, urban development, as well as creating thousands of job and investment opportunities.
In this spirit, the Umrah statistics bulletin is highly important as it provides vital stats and indicators on Umrah in the Kingdom based on two key sources:
First: Umrah Survey: an initial sample household survey in Social Statistics done under GAStat’s annual survey plan, such Internal Umrah Performers Survey. In that survey, information on Umrah
Performers were gathered, including nationality (Saudi/Non-Saudi), the administrative region,
Umrah frequency during a year, the duration of residence, and much more.
Second: Administrative Records based on the date of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah which provide data on External Umrah Performers using various parameters.
The General Authority for Statistics (GAStat) is pleased to include in this bulletin the key indicators in two main parts: the first offers definitions, objectives and adopted methodology, while the second deals with general features of the Umrah Statistics Bulletin. We hope these findings would help meet the needs pf planners, researchers and those interested in Umrah-related studies.

Definitions
First: Objectives of Umrah statistics bulletin
Objectives of Umrah Statistics Bulletin include:
1- Building a database on Internal and External Umrah Performers which would help achieve
the Kingdom’s 2030 Vision.
2- Gain insight into the total annual number of external Umrah performers.
3- Help concerned agencies identify the needed manpower and facilities to serve Umrah
performers, ensure their safety and comfort.
4- Meet the Kingdom’s key data requirements on internal Umrah performers’ numbers and
characteristics needed for development plans.
5- Provide researchers, users and stakeholders with the key data.
Second: Sources of Statistics
GAStat gathers the required data to prepare the Umrah Statistics Bulletin using two sources:
1. First Source: Stats from Umrah Survey>
2. Second Source: Stats from actual administrative records of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.
3. Third: Statistical framework design and survey sample
1. Design of statistical frameworks plan 1. To design and document the proper plan to create a framework of the statistical society.
2. To set lists, maps and analytical specifications of units through which data providers are
selected
3. To use the common records and statistical frameworks as far as possible.
4. To define the required metadata for creating a statistical framework and test
framework, verifying its authenticity and approving its use of the current survey round.
5. Sample Design:
Designing and documenting the proper plan to select the sample units from which data will be collected. To get highly efficient and effective estimates, the survey society has been divided into non-overlapping parts, characterized by relative homogeneity in their units.

Each part is considered a category, and each category is dealt with as an independent society. A random sample is drawn from each category independently, and eventually all drawn units are integrated to form the total sample.
6. Survey Sample Design and Selection
Prior to designing the survey sample and selecting the proper method, the survey (2018) objectives and the sample of the previous survey (2017) have been discussed and studied. Meanwhile, the values of standard deviation and variation coefficient of some of the main demographic variables have been analyzed, and building on the aforementioned, the new sample survey has been evaluated. The selected sample was a random categorical cluster sample selected over two stages, in accordance with the following:
First Stage After determining the optimum size of the survey sample of households of each administrative region, there begins the drawing of the Primary Sampling Units (PSU) from the main sample framework. A number of 1,334 statistical areas within the framework of the census was drawn. They were distributed over all categories in every region using the method that is commensurate with the size and distributed as follows:

Second Stage
The secondary sampling units (SSU), i.e. households, were randomly drawn from the statistical areas, which were chosen in the first phase using the regular random sample. Up to 25 households were chosen from each statistical area, (totaling 33.350) households that were picked in the following order:

7. Scope and range of the sample:
The Umrah survey sample includes the Saudi and non-Saudi households living in the kingdom. It also covers Saudis who are temporarily living abroad for medication, study, tourism, etc who are counted as members of the included households as long as they were picked up in the sample. The survey's sample covers every region in the kingdom.
Fourth: Census data collection and time reference
The survey was carried out in the Q4 2018. The form was filled during an interview held with head of the family. The surveyors who are deployed for field studies paid visits to the chosen households to collect the necessary data.
Fifth: Key Definitions Administrative Region:
A part of Saudi Arabia run by a governmental agency affiliated to the Ministry of the Interior. In each administrative region there is a city representing the region's headquarter. The kingdom is divided into 13 administrative regions.

Governorate
Part of the region, classified as category (A), and is subdivided into:
Municipality
The administrative entity that reports to a governorate, or reports directly to the Emirate headquarter.
Populated locality:
A static population cluster such as a city, village or a farm, or non-static like a cluster around a water source.
City
Refers herein to every locality with a municipality, or whose population exceeds 5.000 persons.
Head of the Household:
It refers to the person regarded by the family members as its chief member. Usually, he is responsible for taking decisions on family affairs and his age must not be under 15 years old. If the family consists of children and their mother, she shall be considered the head of the family.
Umrah Performer
A person - Saudi or Non-Saudi, male or female - who makes up him mind to visit the Holy Mosque in Makkah to perform Umrah rituals (whether he performs one Umrah or more in the same visit in the same survey years 1439 A.H.)
Population:
It refers to all individuals, Saudi and non-Saudi population, living in the Kingdom at the time of the survey.
Survey population:
The total members of the households selected in the sample, including domestic helpers and the like who live in one house, including the Saudis who are temporarily living abroad for education, business, tourism, etc.

Based on the findings of Umrah Survey (Internal Umrah Performers) and data records of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah (External Umrah Performers) for 1439 A.H., the total number of Umrah Performers was (18.311.111), including (36.95% for External Umrah Performers and (63.05%) for Internal Umrah Performers.

Second: External Umrah Performers:
Based on the data of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah for 1439 A.H., the total number of Umrah Performers was (6.765.614), including (47,54%) males and (52,46%) females, over a period of 11 months during Umrah seasons of 1439 A.H. (Moharram - Safar - Rabi' Al Awwal - Rabi' Al Thani - Jumada al-Oal - Jumada al-Thani - Rajab - Shabaan - Ramadan - Shawal - Zul-Qa'dah).

External Umrah Performers by Port of Entry:
External Umrah Performers are distributed by the key ports of entry as follows: King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah totaling (4.198.169) with (62.05%). Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport, Madinah, totaling (1.983.168) with (29.31%). Halat Ammar Port of Entry, Tabuk, totaling (185.388) with (2.74%).

The residence duration of External Umrah Performers varies. They can be distributed as follows: (361.791) external Umrah performers resided for less than one week, with (5.35%), including (56.21%) males and (43.79%) females. (557.319) external Umrah performers resided for one week, with (8.24%), including (45.64%) males and (54.36%) females. (3.334.718) external Umrah performers resided for two weeks, with (49.29%), including (47.64%) males and (52.36%) females. (1.478.818) external Umrah performers resided for three weeks, with (21.86%), including (47.26%) males and (52.74%) females.

Third: Internal Umrah Performers:
Based on the findings of Umrah Survey 1439 A.H., there were (11.545.497) Internal Umrah Performers, with (65.33%) males and (4.673%) females, (5.330.091) Saudis with (46.17%), including (56.24%) males and (43.76%) females. On the other hand, there were (6.215.406) Non- Saudi Internal Umrah Performers with (53.83%) of all Internal Umrah Performers, including (73.12%) males and (26.88%) females.

Umrah Performers (Internal) by Administrative Region:
According to the Umrah survey findings, Makkah presents the biggest city in terms of Internal Umrah Performers with (6.279.146) performers, including (36.15%) Saudis, followed by Riyadh with (1.852.681) performers, including (51.58%) Saudis, then Madinah with (768.530) performers including (44.10%) Saudis. Also, (749.128) persons from the Eastern Region performed Umrah with (57.65%) Saudis. The least number of Internal Umrah Performers was recorded by the Al-Jouf and Northern Borders with (58121) and (56695) performers respectively, including (58.15%) Saudis from Al-Jouf and (62.92%) Saudis from the Northern Borders.

Umrah Performers (Internal) by Age Groups:
The survey findings of Umrah Performers by Age Groups show that the age group (30-39) claim the highest percentage of overall internal Umrah performers (25.09%), with (39.78%) Saudis, while the Saudi male Umrah performers recorded (58.50%) in the same age group. On the other hand, the age group (60+) recorded the least percentage of (5.96%) only, with (58.43%) Saudis, including (55.49%) males in the same age group.
Umrah Performers (Internal) by Months:
Survey findings have shown that Ramadan records the biggest number of Internal Umrah Performers (6.820.584) with (59.1%) compared to the rest months; including (3.195.311) Saudis marking (46.02%) - (56.02%) of them were males while (43.98%) of them were females. Then comes Rajab recording (781.973) performers with (06.77%), including (41.33%) Saudis - (85.10%) were males and 41.9%) were females. In addition, Dhul-Hijjah recorded the least number of number (157.842) with (1.37%) compared to the rest months. In that month, (65.338) Saudis performed Umrah, (57.24%) of them were males while (42.76%) were females.

Internal Umrah Performers by Duration of Residence:
The residence duration of Internal Umrah Performers varies. They can be distributed as follows: One-day-residence performers: (7.800.838), with (67.57%) of total internal Umrah performers. Two-days-residence performers: (1.570.777), with (13.61%) of total internal Umrah performers. Three-days-residence performers: (1.208.752), with (10,47%) of total internal Umrah performers. Four-days-residence performers: (324.912), with (2,81%) of total internal Umrah performers. Five-days-residence performers: (640.218), with (5,55%) of total internal Umrah performers.

Internal Umrah Performers by Duration of Residence during Ramadan:
Survey findings showed that Ramadan recorded (6.820.584) Internal Umrah Performers with (46.85%) Saudis distributed during their residence in Ramadan as follows: 1-10 Ramadan: (52.96%) out of them (47.28%) were Saudis. 11-20 Ramadan: (26.99%) out of them (53.61%) were Saudis. 21-30 Ramadan: (20.05%) out of them (36.61%) were Saudis.

Umrah Performers (Internal) by Cost Estimates:
The survey shows that the daily cost estimates are distributed as follows: (300-SR): (76.74%) out of them (39.17%) were Saudis. (301-600SR): (13.32%) out of them (63.83%) were Saudis. (601-900SR): (1.69%) out of them (71.99%) were Saudis. (901+SR): (8.25%) out of them (81.57%) were Saudis.

According to the survey findings, private vehicle ranks the most used transport to reach Makkah (73.54%) where (53.65%) were Saudis, followed by buses with (20.48%) where (11.82%) were Saudis whereas flights recorded the least means used (5.98%) out of which (71.69%) were Saudis.

According to survey findings, Internal Umrah Performers are distributed by bearing Umrah costs (personal, charitable organization, government) as follows: (89.47%), (1.39%) and 0.15 respectively. While Saudi Umrah Performers are distributed by bearing Umrah costs (personal, charitable organization, government) as follows: (99.18%), (0.57%) and (0.25%) respectively.
