Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy ) and Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig ) are co-authors of a book which posits the existence of paranormal phenomena such as ghosts. When the book proves unpopular, Gilbert distances herself and eventually becomes a physics professor at Columbia University, while Yates continues to study the paranormal at a technical college with eccentric engineer Dr. Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon). Gilbert learns Yates republished the book, threatening her bid for tenure at Columbia. Gilbert reunites with Yates and, in exchange for getting the book out of publication, agrees to assist Yates and Holtzmann on a paranormal investigation. OUR REVIEW : Variety and The Hollywood Reporter reported in August 2014 that Paul Feig had been selected as director and that the reboot would feature an all-female cast. A third Ghostbusters film had been in various stages of development following the release of Ghostbusters II in 1989. Sony decided to reboot the series with much of the original film's cast in cameo roles. The female cast was announced in 2015. Now Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and their darned ladyfriends replacing good old Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. Here is an example of gender-swapped, modern day 'bro' movie reboots. This is a movie from a film-maker whose previous efforts with stars Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, Spy and Bridesmaids, are among the best comic efforts to come out of Hollywood in the past few years. The new Ghostbusters film has even won the approval of the famously hesitant Bill Murray, who will take a cameo role. It has come to be seen as symbol of everything Hollywood film-making can do in matter of reboot.     "It's aimed at kids - the kid in everybody": George Lucas, Star Wars and Children's Entertainment By Peter Krämer, University of East Anglia, UK When Star Wars was released in May 1977, Time magazine hailed it as "The Year's Best Movie" and characterised the special quality of the film with the statement: "It's aimed at kids - the kid in everybody" (Anon., 1977). Many film scholars, highly critical of the aesthetic and ideological preoccupations of Star Wars and of contemporary Hollywood cinema in general, have elaborated on the second part in Time magazine's formula. They have argued that Star Wars is indeed aimed at "the kid in everybody", that is it invites adult spectators to regress to an earlier phase in their social and psychic development and to indulge in infantile fantasies of omnipotence and oedipal strife as well as nostalgically returning to an earlier period in history (the 1950s) when they were kids and the world around them could be imagined as a better place. For these scholars, much of post-1977 Hollywood cinema is characterised by such infantilisation, regression and nostalgia (see, for example, Wood, 1985). I will return to this ideological critique at the end of this essay. For now, however, I want to address a different set of questions about production and marketing strategies as well as actual audiences: What about the first part of Time magazine's formula? Was Star Wars aimed at children? If it was, how did it try to appeal to them, and did it succeed? I am going to address these questions first of all by looking forward from 1977 to the status Star Wars has achieved in the popular culture of the late 1990s.

Series Synopsis: PILOT Shortly after the events of Ghostbusters II, in the early 90s and at the height of the Ghostbusters ​ ​ popularity after saving the world, a group of kids who are members of the Junior Ghostbusters Fan Club enter a haunted house. They are equipped with home­made PKE meters and a “ghost trap” made from Radio Shack parts and modified household items like a toaster oven, and a Ghostbuster fan club version of Tobin’s Spirit Guide (similar to a Boy Scout Handbook).
