    Games and Culture Volume 2 Number 3 July 2007 175-193 © 2007 Sage Publications Geek Chic 10.1177/1555412007304423 http://gac.sagepub.com hosted at Machine Aesthetics, Digital Gaming, http://online.sagepub.com and the Cultural Politics of the Case Mod Bart Simon Concordia University, Montreal This article explores the relationship between computer gamers and their machines in an effort to characterize cultural attitudes toward the materiality of information technology. Whereas dominant culture desires a world in which information technology performs seamlessly within the fabric of everyday life, case-modding gamers prefer to foreground both their computer machinery and their virtuosity in its manipulation. Instead of desiring the disappearance of machines into the background of a world that those machines pro- duce, case modders revel in, and indeed identify with, the material guts of their computer systems. This machine aesthetic is explored further in the context of the LAN party, where the case modders’ machines become as much of a spectacle as the games on the screen. Keywords: case modding; hardware; materiality; LAN party; aesthetics The Cultural Logic of the Information Society When it comes to experiencing the pleasures of today’s networked virtualities, our bodies and our machines continue to get in the way of a really great immersive experience—or so we have been led to believe. Like other critics before her, Margaret Morse (1998) aptly sums up the cultural logic of digital pleasure-seeking in terms of a desire to escape the human condition. “Travelers on the virtual high- ways of an information society have,” she writes, at least one body too many—the now largely sedentary carbon-based body resting at the control console that suffers hunger, corpulence, illness, old age, and ultimately death.

Videogame modding is emphasized an electrate approach to intervening in existing media. Mods have the potential to make potent rhetorical arguments, but they are little-understood in the field of rhet-comp, and there are numerous obstacles to carving a space for them in academic curricula; nevertheless, they are an increasingly common form of participatory engagement that make use of a broad digital skillset. Modders fit into Gregory Ulmer’s electracy apparatus as egents—agents of change in the Internet age—and their playful appropriation of objects from various archives resembles the electrate genre of MyStory (personal alternative-history).

    Computer Case Modding: A Case of Subcultural Substance Marco Gennaro Bozza Abstract With the popularisation of the home computer there has been a remarkable emergence of a subculture of consumption: Case Modding. Through interviews and ‘nethnographic’ study of modders’ online activity, an argument is made that positions their active consumption of computer hardware as a subculture. I argue that postmodern subcultural theory focussing on fluidity of cultural groupings does not account for the somewhat highly committed and stable practices witnessed in the modding scene. As such Hodkinson’s model of Subcultural Substance was tested and seen to be an appropriate model to account for the high levels of commitment, identity, distinctiveness and autonomy exhibited by modders. Introduction Most people who have personal computers at home or in the office simply accept the hardware as it is, a nondescript box of an unmemorable colour; indeed the machinery is to a large extent invisible. However, in recent years a remarkably creative ‘subculture of consumption’ has emerged: ‘prosumer’ computer hardware modification (or ‘modding’, performed by ‘modders’). It developed largely due to video gaming culture (Simon 2007), with its attendant interest in computer hardware to improve gaming performance, but soon took on a subcultural life of its own. This essay is a report on my qualitative ethnographic research into the computer- case modding subculture in South Africa.
