Not only did I fly to Austin for [email protected] the GeForce GTX 1080 launch, I then flew to Macau for AMD’s GROUP ART DIRECTOR Malcolm Campbell RX400 series launch, then direct to Computex for four days of [email protected] back to back meetings. Throw in a case of a bizarre and rather TECH EDITOR Bennett Ring [email protected] serious flu that struck the entire team down, and it’s been an SPACE LORD Ben Mansill epic magazine to put together. [email protected] The good news is that there’s plenty of cool info in here, INTERN Lewis Vaughan especially regarding our Computex visit and the new GeForce WORK EXPERIENCE Angus Renton GTX 1080 card from Nvidia. If there’s one thing I noticed on all of these field trips, it’s that Virtual Reality has become the CONTRIBUTORS driving force of the gaming hardware industry in 2016. With two James Cottee, Alex Mann, Terrence Jarrad, Meghann O’Neill, successful VR kits on the market, hardware makers can now see Theo, Morte, Nathan Lawrence, Dan Staines, Dave Kozicki, Joab Gilroy, Katie Williams, Heidi Kemps, Patrick Stafford, a v alid reason for gamers to upgrade, and they’re all jumping Ashley McKinnon, John Robertson, Tavish Forrest aboard the VR train. All of the major manufacturers believe VR ADVERTISING is going to be massive, and when people that smart believe it, GROUP NATIONAL ADVERTISING MANAGER you know they’re onto something. TECH & GAMING Nvidia gave us a stack of info about their new products, yet Cameron Ferris AMD remained extremely tight-lipped at Computex. Thankfully [email protected] the AMD embargo lifted just before this magazine hits shelves, (+16 2) 02 9901 6348 but not in time for us to get hardware samples to test out their M: 0405 356 419 new range. Rest assured, we’ll be doing a full roundup in the ACCOUNT MANAGER next issue of PC PowerPlay. Sean Fletcher If you’re still not a believer in VR, just know that the industry [email protected] is, and we think they’ve got good reason. Today’s kits are (+16 2) 02 9901 6367 brilliant, but they’re still relatively primitive – hints of what’s M: 0402 585 124 on the way next year have us tantalised. Don’t diss it until you ADVERTISING TRAFFIC try, especially with one of the second generation of games on Alison Begg the way. While everything at the world’s biggest PC trade show is exciting, many of the products on display are iterations on the same new technology – last year it was motherboards for the new Skylake chipset, and this year the trend has understandably been towards videocards and VR. Even with the prevailing trends there are some products that really stand out from the crowd as being drool- worthy. These are but some of the products (or ideas) that captured our attention at Computex 2016. 01 01 InWinAurorafans ^ƏƈƅƆë j Ï #ƈƐƏƈƄƑƐƏë 9 zƈ www.inwin-style.com Ɔ Ƈ ƏƆôƐ ƐƆ ƌƐ ƆƔƅƈƐƈƐƈƈƐƆ ƓƏƋƗè ƄƑƐ 9 zƈ ƑƅƆƗƓƐƅƑƋƗ ƄƆ ƐƆ ƌƏƐƆƐ Ƈ ƋƑƐƈ ƓƆôƒƆƆƆƈ Ƌ ƐƈƌƆê jƆ ƑƏƏ Ƈ ƈƐƆƋƇƈôƐƐƐƌƈƗ ƄƋƓƈ ƈƐô ơƾƠƌƌè ƤƠƠéƾƠƠƠ`^LƍƈƆƏè ƄƑƐ ƐƆ Ɠƕ ƈƐô ƅƆƅƐƆƗ ƗƅƐƏƋƋƆƗƈ ƆƈƑê`ƐƆƏƐƒƈƐƑƆƆƍƏƐƆƇ ƅƐƏƋƋƆƏèƐƆƑƏƏƇƅƄƆƗƈƕƅƈƆƗ 02 ƐƆƐƆƏƆƈƍƑƐƅƄƆƑƆƗƇƏƌƑƋƐƈƍƋƆ ƇêjƆƗƈƕƅƈƈƅƄƋƆƇƆƐƑƏƆG&# ƇƏƆƔƐƏƋƈƐƈƗƐƆƓƋƆƐƈƅƄƆ ƅƐƏƋƋƆƗ ƒƈ ƓƈƏƆƋƆ ƏƆƌƐƆê 02 EVGA DG-87 ^ƏƈƅƆëƾÖÖêÖÖÏ#ƈƐƏƈƄƑƐƏë&y1 www.evga.com &y1ƈƍƏƌƐƈƐƆƆƓ#1éƤƏƆƇ ƅƆƄƆƈƗƆƈƆƗƐƆƑƋƐƈƌƐƆƌƈ ƍƋƐƇƏƌƗƑƆƐƐƆƐƑƏƆƇƐƆƈƏƇƋƓ ƗƆƈæƆƄƋƈƈƐƐƌƏƆƆƇƇƈƅƈƆƐƋƕƅƋ ƌƑƋƐƈƍƋƆƏƍƈƅƅƏƗçƄƑƐƓƆƐƈƊƈƐƈƄƆƐƐƆƏ ƑƈƐƆƗƐƄƆƈƋƑƆƏƌ^ƐƊƐƐƆ ƏƈƆƐƐƈƇƐƆƗƆƈênƋƈƊƆƌƐƅƆè ƐƆƇƏƐƇƐƆ#1éƤƈƓƐƓƑƋƗƏƌƋƋƕ ƄƆƈƗƆèƆƄƋƈƈƐƐƈƐƇƋƑƈƐƓƋƋê jƆƗƆƈƋƊƌƏƆƋƈƊƆƄƏƓƗèƐ ƐƗƏƗ^èƌƊƈƈƐƈƗƆƋƅƆƇƏƈ ƆƗyƆƐƑƍƏƿƊjyƌƈƏƈê 12 PC PowerPlay TECH SPECIAL 2016 03 PowerColor Devil B 05 BitFenix Prodigy Pillow ^ƏƈƅƆëjÏ#ƈƐƏƈƄƑƐƏë^Ɠ ^ƏƈƅƆëjÏ#ƈƐƏƈƄƑƐƏëƈƐ0ƆƈƔ www.powercolor.com www.bitfenix.com zƈƋƆƑƌƄƆƏƇƌƑƇƅƐƑƏƆƏè Ƒƅ ƋƈƆƓƏƆè Ƒ jƆ^ƏƗƈƕ^ƈƋƋƓƈƅƆƗƆƈƆƗƇƏƓèƄƑƐ Ɨ`ƖƆƏƒƆƗƆƒƆƋƍƆƗƍƏƍƏƈƆƐƏƕƆƔƐƆƏƋƏƍƈƅ ƈƐƆƗƇƇƋƈƋƈƐè`1ƋƈƐƈƗƐƏƆ ƅƏƗƆƅƋƑƏƆƇƏƐƆƈƏƌƈƋƍƐƍè^ƓƆƏƋƏ ƏƈƋƋèƈƐ0ƆƈƔƈƐƆƗƍƐƆƗƇƏƆƋƆƅƆƗ ƐƊƆƗƈƇƇƆƏƆƐƍƍƏƅƄƕƅƏƆƐƈƐƗƋƆ ƈƌƍƋƈƅƈƐƕêjƆƅƆƈƅƌƍƅƐƗƗƆƈƆƗƇƏƈƐƐƈ ƆƔƐƆƏƋ1^nƆƅƋƑƏƆƐƐƓƈƋƋƗƗƌƈƍƓƆƏƐƕ ƗƆƊƏƐƆƏƐƄƆƈƋƈƍƍƆƗƑƗƆƏƈƐê9ƐƌƋƋ ƋƍƐƍƏLƈƈ^ƓƈƐjƑƗƆƏƄƋƐƢƅƆƅƐƈêjƆƄƔ ƈƖƆƌƆƐƐƈƐƅƋƕƇƈƐ9jƌƄèƄƑƐƑƆ ƈƅƌƍƐƈƄƋƆƓƈƐƌƐL#ƗMƒƈƗƈƅƏƗæƓƆôƏƆƐ ƇƑƋƋƈƖƆƗƏƍƈƅƅƏƗƈƋƆƅƋƑƏƆèƆƑƏƈ ƑƏƆƄƑƐƐƆơƠƤƠƃơƠƣƠƗ`ƿƤƠƕƆƐèƄƑƐƈƐôƇƆ ƐƐƕƑƏƌƐƆƔƍƆƈƒƆƅƌƍƆƐƈƋƓƕ ƐƑƌƆƐƐƐƆƕƓƈƋƋƄƆƅƌƍƐƈƄƋƆƓƆƋƋçêjƆƄƔ ƅƋƆƏƗƈƍƋƕêjƆƏƆƈƆƐƍƏƈƅƆƕƆƐèƄƑƐƓƆôƗƕ ƈôƐƌƋƋèƐƗƈƐƿƠƠƔơƣƾƔƾƿƾƌƌèƄƑƐƆƈƐƆƏƏƆ ƐƆƅƆƓƈƋƋƏƆƐƈƋƏƑƗƾƠƠƓƆƈƐƈƏƆƋƆƆƗ ƐƆ ƌƉƏƈƐƕ Ƈ ƍƓƆƏƇƑƋ Əƍƈƅ ƅƏƗê ƋƐƆƏ Ɛƈ ƕƆƏê 04 EpicGear Morph 06 Tesoro Infra-Red switches ^ƏƈƅƆëjÏ#ƈƐƏƈƄƑƐƏë&ƍƈƅ1ƆƏ ^ƏƈƅƆëjÏ#ƈƐƏƈƄƑƐƏëjƆƏ www.epicgear.com www.tesorotec.com jƆLƏƍƈƌƑƆƐƐƐƊƆƅƑƐƌƈƐƈƒƆƏƕ jƆƄƈƆƐƐƏƆƗƈƌƆƅƈƅƋƊƆƕƄƏƗƐƐƆ ƆƏƈƑƋƕêjƆƏƆƄƆƆƐƏƆƗƈƐƆƋƐƕƆƏƏƇƏ ƌƌƆƐƈƍƆƆƗêƆƏƏƕƉƑƐƏƆƋƆƆƗƐƆƈƏ ƌƈƅƆƓƈƐƅƆƄƋƆƈƗƆƍƋƐƆƏƄƑƐƐƍƋƅƆƌƆƐèƄƑƐ dƍƆƆƗƓƈƐƅƆƐƐƅƑƐƗƓƐƆƅƐƑƐƈƗƈƐƅƆè ƐƆLƏƍƈƗƆƈƆƗƓƈƐƅƑƐƌƈƐƈƇƐƆƈƏƗè ƄƑƐjƆƏƏƆƋƊƈƐƆƄƆƐƐƆƏƓƈƐƐƆƈƏ ƏƐƆƏƐƍƍƆƏƅƆƏƆƏƌƈƅèƈƌƈƗêjƆƍƋƌ ƆƓ9ƇƏé`ƆƗƓƈƐƅƆêjƆƈƗƆƇƐƆƆƓƈƐƅƆ ƍƋƐƆƇƐƆƌƑƆƈƐƐƅƆƗƒƈƌƆƐƅƆƈƋƕ ƈƐƐƐƆƕƓƈƋƋƄƆƍƐƈƅƋèƏƆƗƑƅƆƐƆƌƆƅƈƅƋ ƄƆƏƆƌƒƆƗêRƅƆƐƐôƆèƑƆƏƅƓƍƑƐƐƆ ƄƑƅƆƋƐƆƅƕƇƅƑƏƏƆƐƌƆƅƈƅƋƊƆƕƄƏƗƇƏƌ ƋƆƇƐƗƏƈƐƄƑƐƐƗƆƒƆƐƆƆƏê&ƍƈƅ1ƆƏƈ ƇƆƓƌƈƋƋƈƆƅƗƐƋƆƐƆƌƈƋƋƈƆƅƗê9ƐƋƋ ƓƏƊƈƓƈƐRƌƏƐƗƆƒƆƋƍƐƏƆƆƗƈƇƇƆƏƆƐƐƕƋƆƇ ƑƗƒƆƏƕƗƍƍƆƏèƗƈƐôƋƑƅƊƕƐƐƈƐƗƆè ƓƈƐƅƆƐƐƅƏƏƆƍƗƐƐƆƌƆƅƈƅƋƓƈƐƅƆƐƆƕ ƄƆƅƑƆƐƐôƋƋƓƆƒƆƐƐƆƌƌƆƐƈƗƆ ƑƆƈƐƆƈƏƊƆƕƄƏƗ1ƏƆƕèRƏƆƗ^ƑƏƍƋƆêjƆƆ ƍƍƆƏêjƆƌƍƑƐƆƔƑƅƆƌƆƐƓƇƏƆƆƇ ƊƆƕƃƓƈƐƅƆƏƆƋƑƐƆƏƏƕ`ƆƗèƏƓƗ ƐƆƏƗƆƐƈƋêdƐƈƋƋèƈƐƓƈƋƋƄƆƒƆƏƕƆƔƅƈƐƈƐƆƆƆƓ ƋƑƆƏƆƍƆƅƐƈƒƆƋƕê ƐƆƅƋƕƈƐƆƌƌƏƊƆƐê PC PowerPlay 13 09 Zotac Zbox Magnus EN980 ƏƈƅƆë dƐƏƐƐƏƑƗơƢƤƠÏ#ƈƐƏƈƄƑƐƏë Ɛƅ ww.zotac.com/au ƋƆƗ ƄƕƐƆƅƏƆƐƏƐƆƓƏƋƗôƇƈƏƐy`ƌƈƈ^èƐƆ ƅ ƄƔLƑ&MÖƤƠƈƍƓƆƏƇƑƋƗƐƆƌƍƐƈ ƄƆƐê9ƈƗƆƐƆƌƋƋƾƾǀƔƾƠƢƔơƾƤƌƌƅƈ ƏƆƈǀéÕƿƠƠèƑƍƐơÕ1Ƅ`Lè1ƆƇƏƅƆ1jÖƤƠ

  • Application Note
AN5073 Application note Receiving S/PDIF audio stream with the STM32F4/F7/H7 Series Introduction The Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format (S/PDIF) is a point-to-point protocol for serial and uni-directional transmission of digital audio through a single transmission line for consumer and professional applications. The transmission of data can be done in several ways, by electrical or optical means. The S/PDIFRX peripheral embedded in STM32 devices is designed to receive an S/PDIF flow compliant with IEC-60958 and IEC-61937, which define the physical implementation requirements as well as the coding and the protocol. These standards support simple stereo streams up to high sample rates, and compressed multi-channel surround sound, such as those defined by Dolby or DTS. This application note describes electrical interfaces, to properly connect the S/PDIF stream generated by an external device to an STM32 device embedding the S/PDIFRX interface peripheral, since the voltage level of the S/PDIF line is not the same as that used in STM32 devices. • An Educational Physics Laboratory in Mobile Versus Room Scale Virtual Reality - a Comparative Study
An Educational Physics Laboratory in Mobile Versus Room Scale Virtual Reality - A Comparative Study Johanna Pirker1, Isabel Lesjak1, Mathias Parger1, and Christian G¨utl1;2 1 Graz University of Technology, Austria [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] 2 Curtin University, Western Australia [email protected] Abstract. Despite year-long efforts in education, studying and under- standing physical phenomena still proves to be a challenge to both learn- ers and educators. However, with the current rise of Virtual Reality expe- riences, interactive immersive simulations in 3D are becoming a promis- ing tool with great potential to enhance and support traditional class- room setups and experiences in an engaging and immersive way. The paper describes the evaluation of the physics laboratory Maroon pre- sented on two distinct VR setups: first, a mobile and cost-efficient but simpler VR experience with the Samsung GEAR and second, a more interactive room scale experience with the HTC VIVE. First results of both preliminary empirical studies indicate that the VIVE environment increases user interactivity and engagement whereas the GEAR setup benefits from portability and better flexibility. In this paper we discuss device-specific design aspects and provide a comparison focusing on as- pects such as immersion, engagement, presence and motivation. Keywords: virtual reality, immersion, physics education 1 Introduction The improvement of science education is still a topic under frequent discussion in the world today. In physics education in particular in, the situation is two- fold: many teachers are challenged in teaching concepts to an increasing number of students, who in turn often face issues themselves in trying to understand the concepts taught while linking theoretical formulas to natural phenomena.

However, it faces several limitations, mainly due to hardware constraints and limitations engendered by the stimulation needed by the BCI. The main restriction is still the low transfer rate that can be achieved by current BCI technology, preventing movement while using VR. The goal of this paper is to review current limitations and to provide application creators with design recommendations to overcome them, thus significantly reducing the development time and making the domain of BCI more accessible to developers. We review the design of video games from the perspective of BCI and VR with the objective of enhancing the user experience. An essential recommendation is to use the BCI only for non-complex and non-critical tasks in the game. Also, the BCI should be used to control actions that are naturally integrated into the virtual world. Finally, adventure and simulation games, especially if cooperative (multi-user), appear to be the best candidates for designing an effective VR game enriched by BCI technology.

  • Information Hiding at SSD NAND Flash Memory Physical Layer
SECURWARE 2014 : The Eighth International Conference on Emerging Security Information, Systems and Technologies DeadDrop-in-a-Flash: Information Hiding at SSD NAND Flash Memory Physical Layer Avinash Srinivasan and Jie Wu Panneer Santhalingam and Jeffrey Zamanski Temple University George Mason University Computer and Information Sciences Volgenau School of Engineering Philadelphia, USA Fairfax, USA Email: [avinash, jiewu]@temple.edu Email: [psanthal, jzamansk]@gmu.edu Abstract—The research presented in this paper, to of logical blocks to physical flash memory is controlled by the best of our knowledge, is the first attempt at the FTL on SSDs, this cannot be used for IH on SSDs. Our information hiding (IH) at the physical layer of a Solid proposed solution is 100% filesystem and OS-independent, State Drive (SSD) NAND flash memory. SSDs, like providing a lot of flexibility in implementation. Note that HDDs, require a mapping between the Logical Block throughout this paper, the term “physical layer” refers Addressing (LB) and physical media. However, the to the physical NAND flash memory of the SSD, and mapping on SSDs is significantly more complex and is handled by the Flash Translation Layer (FTL). FTL readers should not confuse it with the Open Systems is implemented via a proprietary firmware and serves Interconnection (OSI) model physical layer. to both protect the NAND chips from physical access Traditional HDDs, since their advent more than 50 as well as mediate the data exchange between the years ago, have had the least advancement among storage logical and the physical disk. On the other hand, the hardware, excluding their storage densities.

  • Monte Carlo Evaluation of Financial Options Using a GPU a Thesis
Monte Carlo Evaluation of Financial Options using a GPU Claus Jespersen 20093084 A thesis presented for the degree of Master of Science Computer Science Department Aarhus University Denmark 02-02-2015 Supervisor: Gerth Brodal Abstract The financial sector has in the last decades introduced several new fi- nancial instruments. Among these instruments, are the financial options, which for some cases can be difficult if not impossible to evaluate analyti- cally. In those cases the Monte Carlo method can be used for pricing these instruments. The Monte Carlo method is a computationally expensive al- gorithm for pricing options, but is at the same time an embarrassingly parallel algorithm. Modern Graphical Processing Units (GPU) can be used for general purpose parallel-computing, and the Monte Carlo method is an ideal candidate for GPU acceleration. In this thesis, we will evaluate the classical vanilla European option, an arithmetic Asian option, and an Up-and-out barrier option using the Monte Carlo method accelerated on a GPU. We consider two scenarios; a single option evaluation, and a se- quence of a varying amount of option evaluations. We report performance speedups of up to 290x versus a single threaded CPU implementation and up to 53x versus a multi threaded CPU implementation. 1 Contents I Theoretical aspects of Computational Finance 5 1 Computational Finance 5 1.1 Options . .7 1.1.1 Types of options . .7 1.1.2 Exotic options . .9 1.2 Pricing of options . 11 1.2.1 The Black-Scholes Partial Differential Equation . 11 1.2.2 Solving the PDE and pricing vanilla European options .
