PSC-Communicate Sports Trains Palarong Pambansa Campus Journalists PAGE 3 Team Philippines Hits It Big at The Chairman Ramirez is Team Philippines CDM for 30th SEAG PAGE 16 WRITE WHAT’S RIGHT: PSC-Communicate Sports trains Palarong Pambansa campus journalists PAGE 3 Team Philippines hits it big at the Arafura Games 2019PAGE 5 PAGE 9 OF NATIONAL INTEREST The Philippines’ hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games is fast approaching and all stakeholders must unite to make it successful. President Rodrigo R. Duterte, according to Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William I. Ramirez, also the chef-de-mission of Team Philippines, insisted that the national sports agency expend its energies towards the athletes’ preparations for the Games. Ramirez and the PSC commissioners, thus, continued meeting with different national sports associations, athletes and coaches to assess what needs to be done to help them in their preparations. It is of national interest that the welfare of our athletes be given premium since they are the ones who will compete for flag and country. They need to be ready in all aspects of the competition - physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological and mental. The PSC is doing its share to meet those needs. However, the athletes must have peace of mind not just during the competition proper but also during their ongoing training. It would do them much good if everybody who play vital roles in their SEA Games stint are also at peace with each other. “We win as one,” as this SEAG edition’s theme goes. In the same line of argument, we also lose as one Philippines if we do not make unity and peace both a genuine part of our actions – atleast for the sake of our athletes who, like soldiers, are set to march into battle come November. To host well and perform excellently are of national interest on this national commitment. Let us be there for them, as one community. Let us put aside personal interest and divisive forces to present one united Philippines. arely six months from now, the Philippines will host the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. This is a gargantuan task since I just recently assumed the chef-de-mission position, which I shall Bundertake while also wearing the hat of PSC Chief. The ongoing squabbles and leadership struggles in the Philippine sporting community is a situation we all wish is not real but is a sad truth at the moment. However, the PSC is steadfast in its mandate and mission to take care of our national athletes at the elite level and take care of grassroots sports. Our President Rodrigo R. Duterte, through instructions relayed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, wants to shield our athletes from issues that might be detrimental to their mission in giving their best for the country come the staging of the 2019 SEA Games set on November 30 to December 11. We want to assure the athletes and coaches that your government, your national sports gency, have your best interests at heart. I and my four commissioners along with my core group, the executive director, the deputy executive director, the chief of staff and the rest of the PSC will be behind you all the way. Train hard, focus on your goals and make your country proud. Seize this very special opportunity as hundreds, if not thousands, of your fellow Filipinos will cheer for you in person as you play for your flag and country in your own home land. Millions more are praying for all of you. We fervently hope and pray that all prevailing issues be resolved soon for the sake of national interest. As I always say, we can do more when we act as one so let us all unite for Philippine sports! By Rommel C. All rights reserved. 2 PE Plus: Retooling Physical Education for Inclusion, Development and Competition INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SPORT PEDAGOGY, HEALTH AND WELLNESS UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES QUEZON CITY OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT MESSAGE I am privileged to welcome all the guests and participants of the 1st International Conference on Sport Pedagogy, Health and Wellness (ICSPHW). No less than the world's top experts in health, human movement, and pedagogy are gathered here today to discuss important physical education and sports science-related topics over the next three days. While UP's commitment to academic excellence has always been the cornerstone of our success, this has at times been incorrectly conflated with a pursuit of purely intellectual brilliance. This misconception, no doubt fed by the false dichotomy of mind and body, has led to the misconstrued notion attributing UP's contributions to society to purely mental feats. This is of course far from the truth, and does not bespeak of the kind of liberal education that UP has historically espoused. We are lucky and grateful that the UP College of Human Kinetics (UP CHK) has been fully committed to bucking the stereotype and has been showing how well-rounded the Filipino youth can be. Since assuming its name in 1989, the UP CHK has been the base of operations and primary nurturer of UP's student athletes and athletic organizations.
