Isle of Wight Record Office GB0189C.F.C Isle of Wight Record Office This catalogue was digitised by The National Archives as part of the National Register of Archives digitisation project NRA 24562 The National Archives ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY RECORD OFFICE COWES FERRY COMMITTEE DOCUMENTS, COWES FERRY COMMITTEE DOCUMENTS - REF: C.F.C. History: Up to 1859 the ferry rights were leased by the Grown to Mr John L. Roberton, who died aged 88 and was described as of East Cowes in 1895 (see I.W. Observer for that year). In 1859 these rights were sold to a Ferry Company. According to W. White's Commercial Directory 1859, it had a capital of £3000 "for the purpose of connecting East and West Cowes by a Floating Bridge'. In 1863 the right of ferry was leased to "Southampton, I.W. and South of England Royal Steam Packet Company'. According to the 'I.W. Observer' 1900 public meetins were held in both East and West Cowes in December. They both ratified with acclamation the decision or the 2 District Councils of these towns to promote a Bill in Parliament for acquiring the Ferry rights at. Cowes on the Expiration of the lease of the Southampton, I.W. and South of England Royal Steam Packet Co. The Joint Committees of the two Councils ran the ferry from October 1901 1933 when the 2 Councils amalgamated. The new authority ran it till 1971/2, when it was taken over by I.W.C.C. Documents:- This Collection represents the archives of the Cowes Ferry Committee Managers. The actual Minutes would be preserved at Northwood House and the Clerk"s papers mainly with Damant & Son. The Collection was deposited in 3 sections, which accounts for the peculiarities of the listing. The first section with no letter references were deposited by Mr Purdy of Clerk's Department, County Hall. Sections C.F.C./A/- were collected from the Managers office and Section C.F.C./ were later deposited by him. Some documents especially of a recent date have been retained at the Managers office on the West Cowes side. As the Floating Bridge is a very rare institution, virtually no weeding has been done by the Record Office. The Boiler and Engine Certificates are of especial interest to the historian of Technology. The correspondence about and inspections of the Diesel Electric Bridge of 1936 are of exceptional importance. The advertisements of firms wishing to deal with Cowes Ferry' Committee are useful. The day to day running by the Manager of the Ferry can be traced in the Rough Minute Books, letter files and account ledgers. Managers of Cowes Ferry Committee:- Oct 1901 Aug/Oct 1909 W.A. Scope of the Review 3 B. Limitations and responsibilities Distribution list For action: Helen Miles, Head of Legal Services and Monitoring Officer For information: John Metcalfe, Chief Executive FINAL PwC C - 30 Back Executive summary Background and scope Outcomes Appendices Executive summary (1 of 1) Overview The replacement of the Cowes Floating Bridge is a high profile project for the Isle of Wight Council and was initially integrated with the overall project plans to deliver the regeneration of East Cowes. In order to ensure that there was a suitable level of community engagement and agreement there was a need for additional consultation on the wider regeneration of the local area. The Solent Gateways initiative, which originally included the Floating Bridge replacement, progressed more slowly than originally planned due to planning issues. Therefore the Floating Bridge project was separated out in order to secure the funding that had been identified under the Local Growth Deal. The Council therefore separated the Bridge from the East Cowes regeneration project in order to deliver the Bridge with Local Growth Deal funds. The Council duly completed the required Business Cases and secured the funding to support the Cowes Floating Bridge infrastructure development. The project progressed through specification, tender and appointment phases for the key contractors for example Naval Architects, Marine Engineers, Owners Representative etc. and infrastructure elements for example the boat itself and the slipway works.

  • The Gurnard Roman Villa
Island Sites Revisited The Gurnard Roman Villa by C. T. WlTHERBY GENERAL NOTE HIS building was discovered in 1864 by Mr Edwin Joseph Smith and it is described by the Rev Edmund Kell, M.A., F.S.A., in the British Archaeological Association Reports T for 1866 (p. 351). This report, which includes a copy of the plan of the building prepared by Mr Smith, shows that parts of three rooms were found, the rooms running east and west. The original of Mr Smith's plan is held by the Cowes Urban District Council at Northwood House, Cowes. The whole of the villa has now been destroyed by the sea. EXACT POSITION This is not easy to determine, because Mr Smith's plan does not show any surface feature other than a hedge and the sea has encroached very greatly since 1866. However, the writer suggests that the most easterly of the three rooms of the villa was about 30 yards west, or north-west, of Marsh Cottage, Gurnard, which is itself about 50 yards north of the bridge over the Gurnard Luck. The site is two miles west of Cowes. The evidence to support this is as follows: (a) In his account, Mr Fell refers to the fact that traces of the villa ' appear to enter the garden of the nearby cottage', and later he mentions that a Mrs Grist lived in the cottage in 1866. (Jb) The writer has been informed by Mr Gladstone Flux, of Rew Street, Gurnard, that his grandfather told him that Marsh Cottage was built by a Mr Grist or Grisk.
