I | Introduction Communities in different times and places in the world have given varying weight to forms of knowledge and the variety of processes by which knowledge is believed to be created. Bound to each society’s unique culture, these epistemological hierarchies are constantly in flux: Social and religious factors, for example, shaped such hierarchies by emphasizing some processes of creating knowledge (“ways of knowing”) over others, while those ways of knowing could in turn influence the society in which they were performed. In this study, I examine the changing status of mathematics in the epistemological hierarchy of the medieval Islamicate world, especially in terms of its relationship to other forms of natural and secular knowledge.1 Part of my research included a quantitative study, detailed in Appendix A, which suggested two trends: (1) Overall, the field of pure mathematics drew more Muslim than non-Muslim scholars, and (2) this trend was not consistent across time; rather, interest spiked in the late ninth to early tenth century and remained high through the rest of the ‘Abbasid period.

    Mathematical Philology in the Treatise on Double False Position in an Arabic Manuscript at Columbia University* Alexandre M. Roberts University of Southern California Los Angeles, CA, USA [email protected] September 7, 2020 Abstract This article examines an Arabic mathematical manuscript at Columbia Uni- versity’s Rare Book and Manuscript Library (or. 45), focusing on a previously un- published set of texts: the treatise on the mathematical method known as Double False Position, as supplemented by Jābir ibn Ibrāhīm al-Ṣābī (tenth century?), and the commentaries by Aḥmad ibn al-Sarī (d. 548/1153–4) and Saʿd al-Dīn Asʿad ibn Saʿīd al-Hamadhānī (12th/13th century?), the latter previously unnoticed. The ar- ticle sketches the contents of the manuscript, then offers an editio princeps, trans- lation, and analysis of the treatise. It then considers how the Swiss historian of mathematics Heinrich Suter (1848–1922) read Jābir’s treatise (as contained in a dif- ferent manuscript) before concluding with my own proposal for how to go about reading this mathematical text: as a witness of multiple stages of a complex tex- tual tradition of teaching, extending, and rethinking mathematics — that is, we should read it philologically. “A woman dies, leaving her husband, a son, and three daughters.”1 You are tasked with dividing the property among her heirs according to Islamic law. The rules in this case are that the husband inherits one quarter of the estate, and that in dividing what remains, the son’s share is twice each daughter’s share. Suppose her estate is 100 dinars. How much does the son inherit? You have never studied basic algebra.

    An Index of Authors to A Survey of the Scientific Manuscripts in the Egyptian National Library Benno van Dalen and David A. King Key words: scientific manuscripts, catalogue, index, bio-bibliography Abstract In 1986, David A. King published an English survey of his Arabic catalogue of the scientific manuscripts in the Egyptian National Library in Cairo, which had appeared in two large volumes in 1981 and 1986. This survey is arranged chronologically by author within a number of geographical regions. Although a list of all authors is found at the beginning of the work, no alphabetical index of authors is included. On the occasion of King’s retirement, and with an eye on the recent renewed interest in the bio-bibliography of Islamic scholars, this article presents such an index, generated from a computer database by Benno van Dalen. “Never Index Your Own Book”, title of Chapter 55 of Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., 1963. Introduction 1 (King) During the period 1972–79 I was involved in a project based at the American Research Center in Egypt. The stated goal of the project was to catalogue the 2,500-odd astronomical and mathematical Arabic, Persian and Turkish manuscripts in the Egyptian National Library (Dar¯ al-Kutub al-Mis. riyya) in Cairo. Continuous funding in soft currency (Egyptian pounds) was se- cured from the Smithsonian Institution’s PL480 programme by Prof. Owen Suhayl 7 (2007) 9–46 10 Benno van Dalen and David A. King Gingerich of Harvard and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatories. The first two years of the project, at the end of which I first gained unlimited access to the manuscripts, defined the modus operandi of the next five years, namely, to use Cairo as a base for serious research into the history of Islamic astronomy.

    Arabic Medicine The Sudhoff Collection of the History of Arabic medicine, deaccessioned from the department of the History of medicine of the university of Leipzig. A highly important ensemble of books on early Islamic medicine and science, assembled by one of the most renowned medical research institutes of its age, comprising not only rare historical and bibliographical studies, but also many first printed editions of crucial scientific texts in Arabic, frequently in the form of doctoral theses that remain almost impossible to find in libraries. Several titles, such as Steinschneider’s Introduction to the Arabic Literature of the Jews (published in no more than 20 copies, “for private circulation” only), have not been seen on the market in decades, making the present offering a unique opportunity to acquire some of the most elusive relevant literature published in the late 19th and early 20th century. Established in 1906, the Karl Sudhoff Institute in Leipzig was the first institute for the study of the history of medicine established worldwide. Its founder Karl Sudhoff (1853– 1938) is regarded as one of the 20th century’s foremost historians of medicine. A practicing physician for most of his life, Sudhoff published more than four hundred articles as well as many monographs, edited standard works and editions of original manuscripts. He was personally involved in building the institute’s library and thus in assembling the present collection. The 88 volumes offered here, to be sold as a collection, include numerous relevant issues of scholarly journals as well as journal articles. They often unite within a single volume several items published separately but forming a clear thematic unit, sometimes bringing together between two covers material that appeared at various times and in several places but was intended by the author to be considered as a whole.

Hogendijk Department of Mathematics University of Utrecht For Abu Max I Abii Sacid al-Qarir al-JurjanI Almost nothing is known about the life of the geometer Abu Sa<-rdal-I;)arir ("the blind") al-JurjanI. His name indicates that he originated from the town of Jurjan, that is present-day Gargan near the Caspian Sea in Iran. The most complete form of his name appears in one version of al-BirunI's Extraction of Chords [20, p.13]1 as Abu Sa<-rdMul).ammad ibn AlI al-I;)arir al-JurjanI. In [19, p. 27], Suter confused the geometer, Abu Sa<"fdal-I;)arir al-JurjanI, with the philologist, Abu Sa<-rdal-I;)arir Al).mad ibn Khalid, who died in 895 CE. 2 Consequently, al-JurjanI is listed as a ninth-century mathematician by Sezgin [17, vol. 5, pp. 263-264, vol. 6, p. 159] and by Matvievskaya and Rozenfeld [13, vol. 2, p. 76, no. 48]. In the Geometrical Problems, published below, al-JurjanI mentions Abu Abdallah al-ShannI, 3 who lived in the second half of the 10th century CE. This reference confirms that the geometer Mul).ammad ibn AlI al-JurjanI is not identical to the philologist Al).mad ibn Khalid. We will see below that al-JurjanI must have flourished around 1000 CE. 4 Two treatises by al-JurjanI have come down to us, both of considerable historical interest. 1. His Geometrical Problems begin with a construction of a neusis by means of a parabola and hyperbola.
