Quarto. $1,200.00 Richard Baxter(1615-1691) "One of the greatest of English theologians.... One of the most voluminous of English authors, and one of the best."--New Schaff-Herzog Ency. Religious Knowledge, II:15. He was a leader on the Non-conformist side in the Savoy Conference. He left the Church of England 3 days before the Act of Uniformity was passed. His theology which modified the Calvinism of Baxter's day somewhat, made him unpopular with his contemporaries and caused a split among the Dissenters of the eighteenth century. His output of books and pamphlets was massive but the Saints Rest remains the best known and loved. It has been constantly in print from 1650 to today. "He was a quite exceptionally prolific writer, the author of more than 130 books... several of them folios over 1 million words in length, as well as of hundreds of letters and unpublished papers and treatises.... These works enjoyed an unprecedented popularity, many titles-notably The Saints Everlasting Rest and A Call to the Unconverted (1658)- going through repeated printings. [1664]. 2 Vols Folio, 19.2 x 28.9cm. $500.00 Ralph Brownrigg (1592-1659), bishop of Exeter. "In 1606 he went to Pembroke College, Cambridge, as a scholar of the college. Conversations four years later in the privacy of his college rooms nearly brought him punishment when he was informed on by David Owen, an upholder of the divine right of kings, for discussing whether kings might be deposed for breaking fundamental laws. In the event his career continued smoothly. He proceeded BD in 1621 and DD in 1627... Brownrigg was a noted Calvinist and gained a reputation as an opponent of Arminianism early in his career at Cambridge, yet his words to Simonds D'Ewes on his election as master of St Catharine's College in 1635 show his readiness to be conciliatory. He said that `as I account it my duty to promote conformity to the orders of our church so I shall undertake that service in the spirit of love and levity, being assured that I am amongst those whose dispositions are tractable' (Cliffe, 102)... When parliament met in 1640 Brownrigg was drawn towards the centre of affairs, partly through his relationship to John Pym; at an unknown date he had married Pym's niece (she died about 1632). His credentials as an impeccable Calvinist were confirmed by an invitation to preach at the communion service for the Short Parliament on 3 May. As an archdeacon he sat in the lower house of convocation and was active in opposition to the canons of 1640. When the Long Parliament met Brownrigg became one of the ecclesiastical advisers to a group, led by the earl of Bedford and including Pym, which was planning a broader settlement of government... Brownrigg remained at Cambridge when he became bishop of Exeter. He was the Cambridge representative to the Westminster assembly in 1643 but was excused from attendance on the grounds of being vice- chancellor. His active career ended in 1645 when he was arrested for the sermon he preached before the university as vice-chancellor on the anniversary of the king's coronation (2 February). Ironically, in view of the incident thirty years earlier, he was reported to have `denied any capacity in Christian Subjects to resist their Sovereign Princes, for which they had neither Christs precept nor any good Christian practice'; they had `only the choice to obey actively or passively, to do or to suffer; and rather to suffer than to sin by doing or resisting in any unlawful way'. In response `he was immediately proscribed and outed of his place in the University, and deprived of his liberty' (Gauden, 182)... Although Brownrigg was prevented from being an active bishop he achieved a posthumous reputation from Gauden's Memorials of the Life (1660), and from his Fourty Sermons published by William Martyn the following year so that `the World may know that pious, practical Preaching and Prelatical Dignity are not inconsistent'. The sermons are not dated, but most of them were delivered either on the four main festivals of the church or on the two occasions for thanksgiving for the Stuart monarchs- 5 November and the anniversary of the coronation of Charles I... The Memorials, largely delivered after the funeral sermon, revealed Brownrigg as a bishop who upheld episcopal government but was without `secular pomp and vain ambition', who esteemed the liturgy of the church but was not a stickler for matters of ceremony, regarding them as the shadows not the substance of religion, and who was `against those unquiet and pragmatick spirits which affect endless controversies, vanities and novelties in Religion'.

    WILLIAM CAVE (1637-1713) AND THE FORTUNES OF HISTORIA LITERARIA IN ENGLAND ALEXANDER ROBERT WRIGHT Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, December 2017 Faculty of English Abstract WILLIAM CAVE (1637-1713) AND THE FORTUNES OF HISTORIA LITERARIA IN ENGLAND Alexander Robert Wright This thesis is the first full-length study of the English clergyman and historian William Cave (1637-1713). As one of a number of Restoration divines invested in exploring the lives and writings of the early Christians, Cave has nonetheless won only meagre interest from early- modernists in the past decade. Among his contemporaries and well into the nineteenth century Cave’s vernacular biographies of the Apostles and Church Fathers were widely read, but it was with the two volumes of his Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Historia Literaria (1688 and 1698), his life’s work, that he made his most important and lasting contribution to scholarship. The first aim of the thesis is therefore to build on a recent quickening of research into the innovative early-modern genre of historia literaria by exploring how, why, and with what help, in the context of late seventeenth-century European intellectual culture, Cave decided to write a work of literary history. To do so it makes extensive use of the handwritten drafts, annotations, notebooks, and letters that he left behind, giving a comprehensive account of his reading and scholarly practices from his student-days in 1650s Cambridge and then as a young clergyman in the 1660s to his final, unsuccessful attempts to publish a revised edition of his book at the end of his life.

Downame was also known for his role in publishing two of the most popular theological manuals: Sir Henry Finch’s The Summe of Sacred Divinitie (1620), which consisted of a much more expanded version of Finch’s earlier Sacred Doctrine (1613), and Archbishop James Ussher’s A Body of Divinitie (1645), which was published from rough manuscripts and without Ussher’s consent, having been intended for private use.2 Downame also had a role in codifying the Westminster annotations on the Bible, being one of a few city ministers to work on the project, though he never sat at the Westminster Assembly.3 Downame’s older brother, 1 Various historians from the seventeenth century to the present have spelled Downame’s name differently (either Downame or Downham).     Richard Chiswell and his Publications in the Late 17th Century TAKANO Michiyo Abstract Richard Chiswell (1640-1711) was one of the leading London publishers of the latter half of the seventeenth century. Although he was an important figure in the book trade, not much is known about him. This paper attempts to discover more about Chiswell through his publications and booklists. The booklists are the pages of book advertisements usually found at the end of books. In England the practice of using booklists to advertise books started in the mid 17th century. Chiswell made some 120 booklists and used them to sell his stock. His publications count over a thousand, but he did not advertise every single title in his booklists. Therefore, those advertised were selected with some intention. Chiswell started this practice in the 1670’s, and later on, from the 1680’s, he more regularly inserted his booklists at the end of his publications. His booklists were varied in style and in contents. In this paper we look at Chiswell’s booklists produced between 1680 and 1700, and examine the changes in them. These changes and what they reflect will be the key to understanding more about Chiswell the man and the bookseller.     A “Theological Junto”: the 1641 Lords’ subcommittee on religious innovation Introduction During the spring of 1641, a series of meetings took place at Westminster, between a handful of prominent Puritan ministers and several of their Conformist counterparts. Officially, these men were merely acting as theological advisers to a House of Lords committee: but both the significance, and the missed potential, of their meetings was recognised by contemporary commentators and has been underlined in recent scholarship. Writing in 1655, Thomas Fuller suggested that “the moderation and mutual compliance of these divines might have produced much good if not interrupted.” Their suggestions for reform “might, under God, have been a means, not only to have checked, but choked our civil war in the infancy thereof.”1 A Conformist member of the sub-committee agreed with him. In his biography of John Williams, completed in 1658, but only published in 1693, John Hacket claimed that, during these meetings, “peace came... near to the birth.”2 Peter Heylyn was more critical of the sub-committee, in his biography of William Laud, published in 1671; but even he was quite clear about it importance. He wrote: Some hoped for a great Reformation to be prepared by them, and settled by the grand committee both in doctrine and discipline, and others as much feared (the affections of the men considered) that doctrinal Calvinism being once settled, more alterations would be made in the public liturgy... till it was brought more near the form of Gallic churches, after the platform of Geneva.3 A number of Non-conformists also looked back on the sub-committee as a missed opportunity.

Sinclair to make this presentation, he suggested that the conceptual framework of the lectures would be that they be positive presentations of traditional Anglican principles from both a biblical and historical perspective and in the light of the contemporary issues in contrast to traditional Anglicanism, especially as expressed in the Affirmation of St. Louis and in the 39 Articles. The rubrics attached to this paper were that Anglican worship should be examined in the light of contemporary liturgies, the Roman Rite, and the proposed revision of the Book of Common Prayer to bring it in line with Roman views. This perforce is a rather tall order; so let us begin. The late Pulitzer Prize winning poet W.H. Auden stated that the Episcopal Church “seems to have gone stark raving mad…And why? The Roman Catholics have had to start from scratch, and as any of them with a feeling for language will admit, they have made a cacophonous horror of the mass. Whereas we had the extraordinary good fortune in that our Prayer Book was composed at exactly the right historical moment. The English language had become more or less what it is today…but the ecclesiastics of the 16 th century still professed a feeling for the ritual and ceremonies which today we have almost entirely lost.” 1 While one might quibble somewhat with what he said, he certainly would have been more indignant had he witnessed me little more than a decade after his death celebrating the Eucharist before the Dean and Canons of St.

  • Anglican Principles for Liturgical Revision
    ATR/92:3 Expressing What Christians Believe: Anglican Principles for Liturgical Revision J. Barrington Bates* What principles have guided liturgical revision in the Anglican Communion? This essay attempts to address that question for each of four historical periods, as well as offer suggestions for fu- ture revision. The author asserts that we cannot simply forge ahead with more experimental texts and trial liturgies if we truly endeavor both to value the inherited tradition and to move where the Spirit is leading us. By working toward a shared understand- ing of principles for liturgical revision, the Episcopal Church and other entities in the Anglican Communion can potentially avoid fractious conflict, produce better quality liturgical texts, and foster confidence that we are following divine guidance. “Liturgy expresses what Christians believe. To change the liturgy therefore runs the risk of changing doctrine—or at least those doctrines which worshippers regularly hear and absorb and which become part of their Christian identity.”1 Since the formal establishment of a separate identity for the Church of England from that of Rome in the sixteenth century, the various church entities that now form the Anglican Communion have made numerous revisions to their liturgy. What principles have guided these efforts? This essay attempts to address that question for each of four historical periods: (1) the reforms of the sixteenth cen- tury, focusing on the claims made by Thomas Cranmer and Richard * J.
