VIEWLANDS REVIEW - Issue 70 Summer 2019 Hello everyone, The Annexe is open to use at last! We will have an official opening later in the year. Residents enjoyed afternoon tea there recently and admired the building. Art class sessions are taking place there. Several meeting and training sessions have also taken place. Please feel free to give us suggestions on what you want to use this facility for. Games afternoons have been suggested. We will be having a Summer Fair on the 24th August organised by the Friends of Viewlands to raise funds for activities for residents. These funds are used to pay for things like the bus for outings, ice-creams and for concerts in the House. We normally have a lovely afternoon with stalls and afternoon tea. An unannounced inspection was carried out by the Care Inspectorate at Viewlands house on the 16th and 17th July. The final Inspection Report has still to be published – it will be put on the noticeboard when received. We have been awarded grade five (very good) for ‘How well do we support people’s wellbeing?’ and grade 4 (good) for ‘How well is our care and support planned? Going forward the company is looking at using a digital system for care planning. Stan has gone home to the Czech Republic but says he will keep in touch with us. Carl has started as maintenance person and is fitting in well. We also welcomed Kenny, chef, he is also fitting in well to our staff team as Alan left to run his own business. -
Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko Reunite for a Taco Date
Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko Reunite for a Taco Date By Meghan Fitzgerald Could it be? Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko are giving one another a second chance at love! An onlooker told People, “The duo was spotted together enjoying lunch at Taco Beach Shack in Hollywood on Monday.” The Nashville actress and Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion have been seen together since the beginning of January, reports UsMagazine.com. After their split in May of 2011, they never really lost contact. They held a steady courtship and is now giving love a second chance! How do you know when to give an old flame a second chance? Cupid’s Advice: Second chances are challenging for some people. They don’t want to be hurt over again, they don’t want to be in a vulnerable state by getting back together. In certain scenarios, it is okay to rekindle the flame. With these situations, you have to be completely sure that giving a second chance is the right thing to do. It is a strong possibility that you think you should give a second chance however, in reality it’s not. Cupid has some advice: 1. They’ve changed: If the relationship ended because your partner ended up changing from when you first began to date, they can change again. Although you may not want to believe that they’ve changed because of past reasons, believe it! People change! If they change for the better, why not give them a second chance? If your relationship was golden before they changed, and you want that again, test the water and go for it. -
Filmic Tomboy Narrative and Queer Feminist Spectatorship
UNHAPPY MEDIUM: FILMIC TOMBOY NARRATIVE AND QUEER FEMINIST SPECTATORSHIP A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Lynne Stahl May 2015 © 2015 Lynne Stahl ALL RIGHTS RESERVED UNHAPPY MEDIUM: FILMIC TOMBOY NARRATIVE AND QUEER FEMINIST SPECTATORSHIP Lynne Stahl, Ph.D. Cornell University, 2015 ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates the ways in which American discourses of gender, sexuality, and emotion structure filmic narrative and the ways in which filmic narrative informs those discourses in turn. It approaches this matter through the figure of the tomboy, vastly undertheorized in literary scholarship, and explores the nodes of resistance that film form, celebrity identity, and queer emotional dispositions open up even in these narratives that obsessively domesticate their tomboy characters and pair them off with male love interests. The first chapter theorizes a mode of queer feminist spectatorship, called infelicitous reading, around the incoherently “happy” endings of tomboy films and obligatorily tragic conclusions of lesbian films; the second chapter links the political and sexual ambivalences of female-centered sports films to the ambivalent results of Title IX; and the third chapter outlines a type of queer reproductivity and feminist paranoia that emerges cumulatively in Jodie Foster’s body of work. Largely indebted to the work of Judith Butler, Lauren Berlant, and Sara Ahmed, this project engages with past and present problematics in the fields of queer theory, feminist film criticism, and affect studies—questions of nondichotomous genders, resistant spectatorship and feminist potential within linear narrative, and the chronological cues that dominant ideology builds into our understandings of gender, sexuality, narrative, and emotions. -

‘ROCK THE HOUSE’ CAST BIOS JACK COLEMAN (Max) – Jack Coleman stars in NBC’s Emmy-nominated ensemble drama series “Heroes” as the mysterious Noah Bennett. Seemingly an unassuming family man as father to Claire, played by Hayden Panettiere, Bennett is also a man of mystery who has an interest in people with special abilities. Coleman has performed on Broadway, off-Broadway, in film and on television. Series roles include “Dynasty,” “Nightmare Café,” “Oh Baby” and “Steven King’s Kingdom Hospital.” Recently, he has been featured on such programs as “Entourage,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Without a Trace” and “CSI Miami.” On stage, Coleman starred on Broadway in Bill Cain’s Stand-Up Tragedy in a part he originated at the Mark Taper Forum. He was nominated for a Los Angeles Drama Critics’ Circle Award for his performance. He reprised the role in San Francisco at the Marines Memorial Theater and in Connecticut at The Hartford Stage Company before opening in New York. Coleman won a Los Angeles Drama Critics’ Circle Award for his performance in John Godber’s Bouncers at the Tiffany Theater and also starred off-Broadway in Simon Gray’s The Common Pursuit. Coleman has also appeared in regional theaters across the country, playing Danny Zuko in Grease from Long Island, New York to Odessa, Texas (where his character in “Heroes” resides), and performing Othello and Loves’ Labours Lost at the Globe of the Great Southwest. Coleman wrote, produced and starred in a short film entitled “Studio City,” an audience favorite at such film festivals as the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival and the New Orleans Media Experience.
