General Information Comments

MMC Detroit Reference Job Number 0719 – 2591 MMC Detroit Global Registry Number 0719 - 35,230 Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) JS23-R1B- 296096 Order Number 212-BJ- 041759 Original Selling Dealer/ In service date Unknown at this time Inspection Date and Location July 26, 2019 Photographic review only Original Report Date: July 26, 2017 Mileage showing on odometer 32,746 Conclusion:

Based on the VIN number, multiple production broadcash sheets, confidential primary and secondary VIN stamps on the body and the photograph image submitted this is a rare surviving 1971 Challenger R/ T Hemi vehicle that has a solid foundation. It was built at Hamtramck Assembly Plant in February 1971. Est production 1 of 59 Hemi manual transmission vehicles. The rarity and collectability of this 1971 R/T 426 Hemi makes it a smart investment in my professional opinion.

Below is the Mecum Harrisburg 2019 auction description (lot S137.1).

About the Collector

At some point in his time collecting, it occurred to Todd Werner that there was a reason the he was amassing had become so popular to begin with, and that reason was their race-car counterparts, specifically those that actually took to the racetracks with the precise goal of propelling their respective makes and models not only to the finish line, but also into the limelight. As just about every baby boomer-era enthusiast will recall, there was a time when the adage “Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday” translated to real life about as literally as any such truism can. And, as a result, many of the muscle cars that grew to become icons of the time owe the entirety of their popularity to their race-prepared brethren. It was that realization that compelled Werner to shift the focus of his collection. Having already acquired top-quality examples of his favorite muscle cars, he found himself wondering what to pursue next, when it dawned on him: why not seek out the cars that “made” the cars? And so began the journey that would ultimately lead to the creation of one of the world’s most historically significant collections of vintage race and muscle cars.

In large part due to that top-shelf nature of Werner’s cars, he has typically been one to hold onto the vehicles he acquires, noting that others have even jokingly referred to his garage as a black hole. But bidders in Harrisburg this July 31 through August 3 should prepare themselves for the opportunity of a lifetime as some of the most amazing muscle cars, famed race cars and more from Werner’s collection are now slated to cross the Mecum auction block .

With more than 40 cars and even a few motorcycles in the group, the list of his track stars and muscle cars is a long one and rich in history. These are, after all, the cars that made the cars, and in a way, that also makes them the cars that made the hobby. A heady assortment of true heyday heroes, the Todd Werner collection is an exceedingly rare group boasting authenticity, originality and pedigree in spades. Opportunities like this are as rare as the race cars themselves, and 42 of the 44 vehicles from Werner’s collection will be offered at no reserve, so don’t miss the chance to make one of these thoroughly vetted victors of the racetrack your own this August

Auction Description: Lot S137.1

Expensive when new, the Hemi Challenger R/T was quite exclusive; insurance rates and increased emission controls would eventually cause the Hemi and R/T options to disappear forever in 1971, the year this black beauty was built. What makes this car unique is its matching-numbers drivetrain, original black exterior paint and original black interior, with two original broadcast sheets to verify it.

Always powerful enough to demand respect, the Hemi package was not for everyone, but by 1971, it had been somewhat domesticated, thanks to the hydraulic cam design. Of course, little else needs to be said about the 426/425 HP Hemi V-8 engine’s notoriety, as it had already established a legacy of victory by this time. Dual 4-barrel , a high-flow exhaust system, a NASCAR-circuit engineered reciprocating assembly and 10.25 compression were part of it to the very end. Behind that, this car has the right stuff, as the engine is backed by the heavy-duty A833 4-speed manual transmission, which in turn mandated the Sure Grip Dana 60 differential.

This car also came with both power front disc brakes and power steering. The interior is sheer muscle-car-level equipment, with the touches that came standard when you ordered the deluxe R/T package. Of all the components installed on this Dodge, the N96 bolted atop the engine and emerging through the hood was the most dramatic.

Like the engine and the R/T package itself, the Shaker also disappeared from the option sheets at the end of this model year. The car rides on factory date-code-correct 15-inch wheels, highlighted with the larger performance size, again a factor that helped set this model above its peers. The current market has recognized Hemi E-bodies as the pinnacle of the era, with examples of these cars often outdistancing other brands in the genre. One of only 71 Hemi Challengers produced in 1971, this is an excellent opportunity to be “back in black.”

Challenger Shaker Production Estimates

In 1970 there were the following: 184 Total 164 R/Ts, 15 R/T SEs, and 5 R/T The ONLY engines could be the 383, 440-4, 440-6, or 426 Hemi There are NO R/Ts with a 340 in 1970

In 1971 there were the following: 224 Total 72 JH non R/T (340 or 383) 11 JH Convertibles (no R/T converts in 1971) 39 R/T Small Block (340) 102 R/T Big Block (383, 440-6, or 426 Hemi)

There are three different Challenger Shaker Hoods Early 1970 (Before early to mid October, 1969) with NO crush zones w/raised boss for triangle emblem Late 1970 (after April 15th) and 1971 with crush zones w/raised boss for triangle emblem Late 1971 (or more likely over the counter part) with crush zones but NO raised boss for triangle emblem There seems to be NO 1970 N96 Challengers known to exist that were built between October 11th, 1969 and April 15th, 1970. I have seen a few examples but they never have a Broadcast Sheet or Documentation.

Additional Information: There were 48 1971 Challengers sold new in Canada got a shaker hood. 1970 Hemi Challenger information there were 5 cars that got shaker hoods between Mid Oct. till ~April 15 when production was to begin again. If I remember correctly there were 3 in Dec. and 2 in Feb. The Dec. cars were two on one day and one on another around the 5-6th. The Feb cars were on the 21st or 22nd build date. There may be as many as 175 1970 Hemi Challenger serial numbers collected that included both R/Ts and R/T-S/Es and another 13 Real Hemi Challenger Convt serial numbers along with 5 fakes. There's at least 3 71 Challenger shaker convertibles in that are not included in the 11. There is one export 1971 Hemi Challenger with a Shaker that would also not be in those USA figures. This is like stating Hemi Production numbers for 1971 Challengers.

Model Year reference : 1970-71 1971 Hemi Challengers sold new in the USA there is a question of just how many exactly by one car because it is amassed of a percentage of cars. 5 1971 Hemi Challengers sold new in Canada, known to be correct 2 know export 1971 Hemi Challengers. That would make either 77 or 78 total 1971 Hemi Challengers known but the USA production figures state 1970 or 71 Hemi Challenger built.

Original Vehicle Assembly Plant

Vehicle Assembly Plant :

Hamtramck Assembly Plant in Hamtramck, MI. It was commonly know as Dodge Main. This assembly plant occupied approximately 67 acres on the edge of the city of Hamtramck, Michigan, which is completely surrounded by the city of Detroit; a small portion was in Detroit itself. Plant 4, on Conant Avenue in Detroit, was separated only from the main plant structures by a railroad right-of-way, which was also the boundary line between the two cities.

Vehicle Condition Rating Scale ( Not applicable for a photographic review )

Condition The following table was use in the evaluation of the above vehicle Scale

1 Restored to current maximum professional standards of quality in every area, or perfect original with components operating and appearing as new. A 95-plus point show car that is not driven 2 Well-restored, or a combination of superior restoration and excellent original. Also, an extremely well-maintained original showing very minimal wear. Many aftermarket items. 3 Completely operable original or "older restoration" showing wear. Also, a good amateur restoration, all presentable and serviceable inside and out. Plus, combinations of well-done restoration and good operable components or a partially restored car with all parts necessary to complete and/or valuable NOS parts. Good survivor 4 A drivable vehicle needing little or only minor work to be functional. A deteriorated restoration or a very poor amateur restoration. All components may need restoration to be "excellent", but the car is mostly useable "as is".

5 Needs complete restoration of body, chassis and interior. May or may not be running, but isn't weathered, wrecked or stripped to the point of being useful only for parts

The record of this review by the MMC Detroit LLC representative and applicable photographs will remain on file in our office for a minimum period of 3 years. This report replaces any previous MMC Detroit reports that may have existed

The vehicle review was conducted based on our experience, knowledge, logic, information available and known data at the time of the inspection. We reserve the right to amend the inspection report should information relating to the vehicle authenticity be discovered or presented to us after the inspection has been completed. The findings will be communicated to the original requester of the report.

Most vehicles have traded hands to many individuals through the years and there are some individuals in the collector car hobby that go through pain staking efforts to ensure that every detail is accurate within a nano- micron to the factory process in an effort to deceive or misrepresent the vehicle. This is sometimes challenging to initially detect during the initial review. It is also illegal to intentionally misrepresent a vehicle in most states and countries.

This amendment process is important because in most cases the vehicle is not in an environment nor will the owner allow a forensic study conduct on key items like the VIN tag, trim tag, body stamping numbers, Broadcast sheets, manufactures certification label, powertrain stampings etc. Continuous improvement in reproduction stamps, tags, documentation technology is not for the greater good over the long run, anyway! We do not endorse it.

The amending of the vehicle report will be done in the spirit of continuous improvement in an effort to enhance the car collection experience for current and future owners. Any additional reviews requested at the owner of this car will be at extra cost.

Note: Please contact MMC Detroit to ensure that the report si the latest.

This vehicle has been recorded in the MMC Detroit Vehicle Registry

Mopar Vehicle Valuation Reference

This information will provide you with some insight into better understanding how to establish the approximate value of a vehicles compared to other similar vehicles in the market place. However, please keep in mind that there are many variables to consider and this is just a guideline.

The first item to consider is the total production of the vehicle. If a vehicle was produced in very small quantities (under 200-300 units) and is highly desirable like a 1970-71 Hemi Cuda it may not be as strongly affected by a non-numbers matching powertrain component as a more common or less popular model (i.e., base model Road Runner, Super Bee, Charger, Cuda’s, Challengers, station wagons, , pick-up etc…) might be. The extremely rare vehicle will always be in a category all their own and establishing the true value is very challenging.

Partial factory or dealer documents, rusted or partially legible VIN or trim tags, unreadable numbers stampings on drivetrain parts or the body will impact collectability and the value of a vehicle. The clarity and correctness is of upmost importance in estimating the value of a vehicle.

The following is a list of items to consider and their estimated value by being present.

• Original legible factory production broadcast sheet: Add 10% • Original factory vehicle traveler: Add 1- 2% • Original consumer information breaking sheet: Add 2-3% • Original factory in process inspection documents: Add 1-2% • Original hardware and final line build sheet: Add 10% • Original IBM card(s): Add 1- 2% / card. • Original monroney (Window/suggested list price) sticker: Add 4% • Original certicard (1964-68) and/or Warranty Car: Add 2 - 3% • Original manufacturer door VIN decal: Add 1% • Original advanced dealer shipping notice: Add 1% • Original Chrysler issues invoice to the dealer : Add 1% • Original new car preparation sheet: Add ½ -1% • Original glove box packet (owner’s manual and info): Add 1/4 % • Desirable paint colors (i.e. High impact, black etc…) Add +5% • Non original trim tag: Deduct 5% • Non matching engine: ( >1967) Deduct 10% • Non matching transmission: (>1967) Deduct 5% • No trim tag or build sheet: Deduct 15-25% • Missing primary and/or secondary body numbers: Deduct 25%+

Other consideration in establishing the value • Vehicle Provenance. The more original factory paperwork always adds to the value of any vehicle. • All original body panels, frame rails, floor pans etc… • Original paint, “survivor” cars, factory promotional cars etc... • Date and part numbers on components (the more the better). • Correct original accessory and other components (the more the better). • Having your vehicle validated/certified by a nationally recognized authority

There is this information in greater detail as well as much more information in the MMC reference restoration manuals that can be ordered on line at mmcdetroit.com web site.

Appendix:

Date Code Reference General Information We often receive questions as to if a vehicle has the correctly dated parts. The information below can be used as a guide for evaluating the parts on a vehicle. Note: The information and Illustrations below are just examples and are not from this vehicle.

Engine Casting vs. Build Dates: The standard range is typically around 30-90 days. The more common and high volume production engine (i.e., 318 or 383) the closer the casting date will be to the final assembly date of the engine.

Low production and high performance engines like the 440 +6 could be as high as 90-120 days and Hemi’s have been found to be as much as 10-12 months early.

Engine Accessories: The engine parts and accessories vary but typically they are near the casting date of the engine. However, some parts have both casting dates and assembly dates.

Part Casting Vs. Build Dates Keep in mind that both dates have to be reviewed when looking at parts like alternators and starters as an example. The typical starter or alternator will have a casting date and an assembly date.
