13 MEDIA-supported films gather 26 nominations at the European Awards

The 32nd European Film Awards ceremony will be held on 7 December in to celebrate and reward the greatest achievements in European cinema. Among the nominees, there are 13 films that have been supported by the EU through the Creative Europe MEDIA programme.

Pain and Glory, and The Traitor top the nominations of the European Film Awards (EFA) with four nominations each, including main categories such as Best Film and Best European Director.

The nominations received by the MEDIA-supported features include:

Best Film

Les Misérables by Ladj Ly, a French production supported by MEDIA with €740.000 for its distribution. Pain and Glory by Pedro Almodóvar, a Spanish film that received €273.000 of MEDIA funding for its distribution. The Favourite, British-Irish co-production by Yorgos Lanthimos that was supported by MEDIA with €50.000 in development. The Traitor by Marco Bellocchio, supported by MEDIA with over €700.000 for both development and distribution. Best European Director

Best European Screenwritter

Ladj Ly, Giordano Gederlini and Alexis Manenti for Les Misérables Pedro Almodóvar for Pain and Glory Céline Sciamma for Portrait of a lady on fire Marco Bellocchio, Francesco Piccolo, Ludovica Rampoldi and Valia Santella for The Traitor.

Best European Comedy

Tel Aviv on Fire by Sameh Zoabi, a co-production of Luxembourg, France, Israel and Belgium that received €40.000 MEDIA funding under the international co-production funds. The Favourite by Yorgos Lanthimos

Best European Animated Feature Film

Buñuel in the labyrinth of the turtles by Salvador Simó, a co-production between Spain and The Netherlands supported by MEDIA with €13.600 for its distribution. Marona’s fantastic tale by Anca Damian (France, Romania, Belgium), funded by MEDIA with €60.000 for development. The swallows of Kabul by Elea Gobbé-Mévellec and Zabou Breitman, supported by MEDIA with €60.000 for development.

Best European Discovery 2019 – Prix Fipresci

Aniara by Pella Kagerman and Hugo Lilja (Sweden and Denmark) received €50.000 from MEDIA for its development. Irina by Nadejda Koseva is a Bulgarina production supported by MEDIA with €60.000 both for development and distribution. Ray & Liz by Richard Billingham is a British film supported with €8.000 of MEDIA funding for its distribution. Les Misérables by Ladj Ly

Overall, the EU has invested €7.2 million through the Creative Europe MEDIA programme to support the development and distribution of these 13 films.
