Vol. 7 Critical Theory and Social Justice Critical Theory and Social Justice Journal of Undergraduate Research Vol
CTSJ CRITICAL THEORY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE JOURNAL OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE SPRING‘18 VOL. 7 CRITICAL THEORY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE CRITICAL THEORY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE JOURNAL OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH VOL. 7 JOURNAL OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE CTSJ | OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE The Politics of Madvillainy: Queer Interventions in Hip-Hop BENNETT BRAZELTON | Tufts University ABSTRACT: Clay Cane writes of hip-hop in The Advocate, “one cannot forget its homophobia, a contagious infection in an art form that once stood for positivity.” This reactionary sentiment to hip-hop masculinity implies a sort of cognitive dissonance toward its intersection with queer theory. In line with the thinking of Moya Bailey and Mark Anthony Neal, I contend that hip-hop should be viewed––rather than dismissed––in terms of opportunities to disrupt oppressive structures within the genre. Little scholarship has used this framework to address disruptive performances outside of queer bodies. This paper attempts to fill this gap by analyzing the enigmatic, comical, at times oppressive, works of rapper MF DOOM. I specifically analyze DOOM’s creation and embrace of villainous identities, his subversions of capitalist mentalities in music, and his complex, transgressive sexualities, juxtaposed with the violent homophobia found in his later work. Ultimately, the purpose of this essay is to qualify archetypes of queer disruption in hip-hop, using DOOM as a case study of both transgression and oppression. “The Illest Villains” Villains who possess supernatural abilities––villains who were the personification of carnage. Madvillain, more accurately, the dark side of our beings. – an excerpt from the album intro, “Illest Villains” on 2004’s Madvillainy José Esteban Muñoz writes in the opening words of Cruising Utopia, “Queerness is not yet here” but is in fact an imagination of futuristic potentiality. -

Hip-hop dominated the charts during the first decade of the 21st century. That represented a dramatic change from 50 years earlier, when black music had been segregated to the "race" charts. The reason why rap artists appealed to such a broad audience was probably that they boasted, on average, the best producers. Music (whether popular or classical) in the second half of the 20th century had been increasingly focusing on the soundscape, on sculpting the atmosphere, rather than on the melody. Hip- hop music completed that trend by mostly disposing of the melody and setting the lyrics in a purely atmospheric context. The producer (the sound director and sculptor) was clearly more important in hip-hop music than in other genres. Competition among producers in turn led to a generation of more and more sophisticated producers. Very few rock producers could compete with hip-hop producers in terms of instrumental creativity. It was the black producers of the 2000s who inherited the mantle of the white producers of the 1960s (Joe Meek, Phil Spector, George Martin, Brian Wilson) who had coined the concept of the studio as an instrument. -
Westside Doom Album Download
westside doom album download WESTSIDEDOOM – Self-titled (EP Review) WESTSIDEDOOM is a newly formed duo consisting of recent Shady Records signee Westside Gunn along with the renown MF DOOM. They announced a collaborative project together just a couple months ago & it’s finally here in the form of a 2-track EP. The first song “Gorilla Monsoon” has an grimy boom bap beat from Griselda Records in-house producer Daringer & while Westside Gunn’s verse is as mobster as always, DOOM definitely outshines him on here. Especially with lines like “Overstand the past to get a grasp of the present, I make it faster than you spends it. End it”. The other track “2STINGS” sees the 2 getting hardcore & the eerie instrumental from The Alchemist fits the tone like a glove. Like many others, I am disappointed that this is wasn’t a full-length album. However, I still enjoyed what we got. It could’ve used a couple more tracks (maybe one with Conway) that way it can feel like an actual EP, but the production is grimy & both MCs compliment each other very well. Score: 8/10. [bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=1251693508 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 tracklist=false artwork=small] Ranking the Best MF DOOM Albums. 2020 just couldn’t leave the premises without giving us one last shot to the balls, huh? The world of hip-hop was absolutely devastated on the afternoon of Dec. 31 when it was announced that Daniel Dumile, the enigmatic MF DOOM, had passed away. We learned that he apparently transitioned on Oct.
