13 Information for Vulcan Parents/‘Ohana

Congratulations! You are now the proud parent of a Vulcan! We are honored that your student has chosen to spend the next four years with us at UH Hilo. Rest assured they have made a great decision. UH Hilo is a wonderful place to complete their degree. With dedicated faculty and staff members to numerous campus resources available to your student to support them, your ‘Ohana will also enjoy their experience.

Parent/‘Ohana Orientation First Year Experience offers a Parent/‘Ohana Orientation - this is not mandatory but highly encouraged. Parent and Family orientation will help you learn about your student’s new home away from home. The more you know, the better you will be able to help your student adjust to his/her/their new surroundings and help him/her/them to be a successful student. We hope you can join us on August 19 and 20 to meet faculty, staff, and our campus resources available to you and your Vulcan. Your student will need to sign up on hilo.hawaii.edu/orientation, and they will invite you to join Orienta- tion via a referral code. To confirm your reserved spot, you must submit payment at the time of signing up online.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) A parent or spouse of a student is advised that information contained in educa- tional records, except as may be determined to be Directory Information, will not be disclosed to him/her/them without the prior written consent of the affiliated student. However, if a student is claimed as a dependent for Federal income tax purposes by either parent, under the newest regulations, either parent may have access to the student’s education records without the student’s consent. The parents must submit a copy of their most current Federal Tax return to the Office of the Registrar, verifying that the student is in fact a dependent. To review more about FERPA and how it relates to your student and UH Hilo, please visit the FERPA page at the Office of the Registrar: https://hilo.hawaii.edu/ registrar/ferpa.php.
