Operating Procedures TVET Technical and Vocational Education and Training 3 Executive Summary Introduction Retrak has over two decades of experience of working with children on the streets in Africa and about one decade operational history in Ethiopia. Retrak Ethiopia works with children living full-time on the streets to give them a real alternative to life on the street. In 2012 Retrak’s records showed that a significant proportion of children met in Addis Ababa came from Ethiopia’s southern region (SNNPR) particularly from the town of Hossana and the surrounding areas. As a result, a plan was developed to address some of the push factors that were leading many children to come to the city. With support from Cordaid, a 3-year pilot community project was implemented (2012-2015). Adjustments to the project were subsequently made and a new drop-in centre in Hossana town was established to reach out to children before they arrive in the capital. The project objectives were outreach and service provision to children living unsupported on the streets; participation of children in education, psychosocial counselling and life skills at drop-in centres; and reintegration of children with their families in SNNPR and support to caregivers. Interventions were also established in vulnerable communities to enrol vulnerable women in Self Help Groups (SHGs) leading to greater economic security and participation in family and community decision making; establish child-led Child Wellbeing Clubs (CWCs) to raise awareness of child protection issues; and community education to promote child protection awareness and response. The goal of the final evaluation is to build on the mid-term review in order to assess achievements of the project, to guide decision-making on next steps for the project and to generate learning for informing similar projects in future. Methodology The final evaluation is based on ongoing monitoring data (child wellbeing assessments, economic household surveys, community child protection mapping, Most Significant Change stories and annual results reports), as well as primary data collection through specific tools such as focus group discussions with representatives from SHGs and CWCs and key informant interviews with selected government officials, religious and community leaders and other relevant stakeholders. The methodologies applied involved participation of beneficiaries in the evaluation process so as to hear feedback on the project services and outcomes directly from the project beneficiaries (both children and adults) and major stakeholders (government line offices). Establishment / Organizational Aspiration: Love In Action Ethiopia/LIA-E/ is an indigenous, not-for-profit, non-governmental charitable organization established and registered in 2001 with the ministry of Justice and re-registered on October 30, 2009 with Charities and Societies Agency of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia as an Ethiopian Residents Charity. The objective of this study was, to investigate economic valuation of soil conservation in the Soro Woreda Ajacho watershed. The study employed double bounded dichotomous format of contingent valuation method was to elicit respondents’ WTP for improved soil conservation practices in terms of labor contribution. Data collated from 321 household heads was used for analysis. Both probit and bivariate model were estimated. Probit model was employed to assess the determinants of willingness to pay. Results of the model showed that family size of respondents, labour shortage, farm land size, education level of the household head and income positively and significantly affected the willingness to pay of the respondents while the level of bids negatively and significantly affected willingness to pay for soil conservation practices in the study area. The study also showed that the mean willingness to pay estimated from the Double Bounded Dichotomous Choice and open ended formats were computed at 137.81 and 78.82 person days per annum, respectively.

    DRMTechnical Periodic Monitoring Report Working 2016 Humanitarian Requirements Document – Ethiopia Group Covering 1 Jan to 31 Dec 2016 Prepared by Clusters and NDRMC Introduction The El Niño global climactic event significantly affected the 2015 meher/summer rains on the heels of failed belg/ spring rains in 2015, driving food insecurity, malnutrition and serious water shortages in many parts of the country. The Government and humanitarian partners issued a joint 2016 Humanitarian Requirements Document (HRD) in December 2015 requesting US$1.4 billion to assist 10.2 million people with food, health and nutrition, water, agriculture, shelter and non-food items, protection and emergency education responses. Following the delay and erratic performance of the belg/spring rains in 2016, a Prioritization Statement was issued in May 2016 with updated humanitarian requirements in nutrition (MAM), agriculture, shelter and non-food items and education.The Mid-Year Review of the HRD identified 9.7 million beneficiaries and updated the funding requirements to $1.2 billion. The 2016 HRD is 69 per cent funded, with contributions of $1.08 billion from international donors and the Government of Ethiopia (including carry-over resources from 2015). Under the leadership of the Government of Ethiopia delivery of life-saving and life- sustaining humanitarian assistance continues across the sectors. However, effective humanitarian response was challenged by shortage of resources, limited logistical capacities and associated delays, and weak real-time information management. This Periodic Monitoring Report (PMR) provides a summary of the cluster financial inputs against outputs and achievements against cluster objectives using secured funding since the launch of the 2016 HRD.

Despite the efforts, progress lags behind its targets in developing countries. The aim of this study focuses on understanding key motivators of sanitation behaviour change, capacity development and intersectoral integration to advance sustainable use of latrines. A mixed methodological approach comprising of survey, interview, focus group discussion and observation is applied to collect evidences. However, research on sanitation behaviour change and capacity development is scanty and at lower stage compared to other health sectors such as on diabetics, HIV/AIDS, obesity or alcoholism. The existing literature indicates that human behaviour change is a crucial factor in achieving sanitation targets and it is vital to work in interdisciplinary manner to achieve such goals. Sociological and historical approaches to sanitation research can contribute immensely to reflect on social facts and lessons from the past and the current practices. This case study discovered that social factors that focus on awareness creation and education is a strong reason in motivating sustainable latrine use followed by emotional layers such as cleanliness and decency as important driving forces.

Jai Kishan Department of Anthropology, Andhra University Abstract Hadiyya is one of the ancient indigenous people in the southern part of Ethiopia, whose language is Hadiyyissaa. The ancient Hadiyya was one of the majority indigenous ethnic groups, which has a great history with strong earliest kingdom in Ethiopia. The current Hdiyya people are not the only indigenous people of the Hadiyya ethnic groups. Due to migration and massive movement within and outside the country, Hadiyyas were forced to live scattered in search of resources, peaceful place for their lives and foreign trade. As a result, they are assimilated with and sometimes overwhelmed by other ethnic groups. This article discusses different tribes of the indigenous Hadiyyas who came to the current place, Hadiyya Zone, in a scattered manner. According to the oral tradition and written documents, the ancient Hadiyya had its own strong Kingdom that helped to administer and rule the widely spread tribes of the ethnic group who had large territories in different parts of the country. The kingdom structure had also played a vital role in shaping the relationship of the Hadiyyas with other ethnic groups and with the outside world. During its kingdom, the head master or governor of Hadiyya used to be called ‘Adilla’ means ‘the King’. The current traditional administrative structure is also shaped in line with the ancient one.
