EBA Engineering Consultants Ltd., operating as A Tetra Tech Company (EBA), was engaged by Kinder Morgan Canada to assemble, organize and summarize relevant oceanographic and meteorological data to support the navigational, environmental, risk assessment and oil spill modelling studies that are required for permitting and design of terminal and shipping route. The environmental parameters that will be utilized in the required studies include wind, air temperature, humidity, solar insolation, visibility, precipitation, water level, water salinity and temperature, current and wave climate. Data and information with respect to these parameters are obtained from sources ranging from government agencies to research organizations and universities. The data presented in this report are divided into five main sections along the potential shipping route (Burrard Inlet, Strait of Georgia, Gulf and San Juan Islands, Juan de Fuca Strait, and Pacific Ocean) between the Pacific Ocean and the Westridge Terminal at Second Narrows. The data will be used in other studies to determine potential hot spots for shipping accidents, formulate oil spill scenarios and estimate potential environmental damage. This information will also be useful in strategizing the ship traffic management and scheduling in order to minimize accidents. Hourly metocean data from 29 met stations and six buoys throughout the study area is presented in this report with analyses of the observed patterns. Wind roses for all 29 meteorological stations and time series plots of hourly winds for 2011 are contained in Appendix A. Wave roses for all six buoys are contained in Appendix B. Time series plots of hourly air temperature, dewpoint and visibility for 2011 are illustrated for each station in Appendix C.     Vancouver Fraser Port Authorit Burrard Inlet underwater noise study: 2020 final report ECHO Program study summary This study was undertaken for the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority-led Enhancing Cetacean Habitat and Observation (ECHO) Program and project partner Tsleil-Waututh Nation with financial support from Transport Canada to learn more about underwater noise and cetacean presence in Burrard Inlet. Building upon the 2019 monitoring project in Burrard Inlet, this project set out to monitor underwater noise and the presence of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoise) in Burrard Inlet, a marine mammal habitat and a key waterway for commercial shipping, port-related activities, and passenger transportation. This document summarizes the project question and describes the methods, key findings, and conclusions. What questions was the study trying to answer? The second year of the Burrard Inlet underwater noise study sought to evaluate longer-term trends in total ambient noise and marine mammal presence, while building upon the results from 2019. Who conducted the project? SMRU Consulting North America (SMRU) was awarded the contract for the 2019 monitoring program, and was retained by Vancouver Fraser Port Authority to continue monitoring though 2020 at fewer sampling locations. What methods were used? Bottom-mounted SoundTrap hydrophone recorders were deployed in two locations in the inner and outer harbour: one at Burrard Inlet East near the Tsleil-Waututh Nation reserve lands and Burnaby petroleum terminals, and one in English Bay between anchorages 1 and 3. Acoustic data were collected over approximately one year between February 2020 and February 2021. The figure below shows the approximate locations of the hydrophone deployments.

    Erasing Indigenous Indigeneity in Vancouver J EAN BARMAN1 anada has become increasingly urban. More and more people choose to live in cities and towns. Under a fifth did so in 1871, according to the first census to be held after Canada C 1867 1901 was formed in . The proportion surpassed a third by , was over half by 1951, and reached 80 percent by 2001.2 Urbanization has not benefited Canadians in equal measure. The most adversely affected have been indigenous peoples. Two reasons intersect: first, the reserves confining those deemed to be status Indians are scattered across the country, meaning lives are increasingly isolated from a fairly concentrated urban mainstream; and second, the handful of reserves in more densely populated areas early on became coveted by newcomers, who sought to wrest them away by licit or illicit means. The pressure became so great that in 1911 the federal government passed legislation making it possible to do so. This article focuses on the second of these two reasons. The city we know as Vancouver is a relatively late creation, originating in 1886 as the western terminus of the transcontinental rail line. Until then, Burrard Inlet, on whose south shore Vancouver sits, was home to a handful of newcomers alongside Squamish and Musqueam peoples who used the area’s resources for sustenance. A hundred and twenty years later, apart from the hidden-away Musqueam Reserve, that indigenous presence has disappeared. 1 This article originated as a paper presented to the Canadian Historical Association, May 2007.     George Black — Early Pioneer Settler on the Coquitlam River Researched and written by Ralph Drew, Belcarra, BC, December 2018. The ‘Colony of British Columbia’ was proclaimed at Fort Langley on November 19th,1858. In early 1859, Colonel Richard Clement Moody, RE, selected the site for the capital of the colony on the north side of the Fraser River where the river branches. The Royal Engineers established their camp at ‘Sapperton’ and proceeded to layout the future townsite of ‘Queensborough’ (later ‘New Westminster’). On July 17th, 1860, ‘New Westminster’ incorporated to become the first municipality in Western Canada. During the winter of 1858–59, the Fraser River froze over for several months and Colonel Moody realized his position when neither supply boat nor gun-boat could come to his aid in case of an attack. As a consequence, Colonel Moody built a “road” to Burrard Inlet in the summer of 1859 as a military expediency, in order that ships might be accessible via salt water. The “road” was initially just a pack trail that was built due north from ‘Sapperton’ in a straight line to Burrard Inlet. In 1861, the pack trail was upgraded to a wagon road ― known today as ‘North Road’. (1) The ‘Pitt River Road’ from New Westminster to ‘Pitt River Meadows’ was completed in June 1862. (2) In the summer of 1859, (3)(4) the first European family to settle in the Coquitlam area arrived on the schooner ‘Rob Roy’ on the west side of the Pitt River to the area known as ‘Pitt River Meadows’ (today ‘Port Coquitlam’) — Alexander McLean (1809–1889), his wife (Jane), and their two small boys: Alexander (1851–1932) and Donald (1856–1930).

The plankton samples examined were collected by the Institute of Oceanography of the University of British Columbia in the summers of 1953 and 1954 from eleven representative areas along the entire coastline of western Canada. It was hoped that the distribution study would correlate with fundamental oceanographic data, and that the pre• sence or absence of a given species of chaetognath might prove to be an indicator of oceanographic conditions. Four species of chaetognaths, representing two genera, were found to be pre• sent. One species, Sagitta elegans. was the most abundant and widely distributed species, occurring at least in small numbers in all the areas sampled. It was characteristic of the mixed coastal waters over the continental shelf and of the inland waters. Enkrohnla hamata. an oceanic form, occurred in most regions in small numbers as an immigrant, and was abundant to- ward the edge of the continental shelf. Sagitta lyra. strictly a deep sea species, was found only in the open waters along the outer coasts, and a few specimens of Sagitta decipiens.
