Chapel Hill 2012 Approved by: Reid Barbour Jessica Wolfe Megan Matchinske Mary Floyd-Wilson Robert Babcock ©2013 Joseph Wallace ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT JOSEPH WALLACE: Pagan Fictions: Literature and False Religion in England, 1550–1650 (Under the direction of Reid Barbour and Jessica Wolfe) This dissertation represents an effort to rethink one of the defining problems of the European Renaissance: the revival of pagan culture. It was very common for Renaissance Christians, from Giovanni Boccaccio to John Calvin, to argue that pagan religions were false because they were based on myths created by poets and politicians. But the Reformation project of distinguishing true from false versions of Christian religion blurred the boundaries between ancient and more recent versions of false religion. The hinge of this reorientation of religious values was the argument that certain religions were merely poetic fables, artificial fictions created by humans. And while some scholars have discussed the changing meaning of religion in the seventeenth century, no one has seen that literary language provided the terms for this change. My project corrects this by juxtaposing the religious imagery of the poetry of Robert Herrick, John Milton, and many others with contemporary debates about the poetic nature of religious imagery. In this way, my project makes a unique contribution to Renaissance studies by demonstrating not only that literary categories are fundamental to an understanding of religion, but also that the religious revolution of the Reformation produced lasting changes in how literary texts create meaning. -

Hobbes’s Thucydides and the Colonial Law of Nations This article attempts to make sense of Thomas Hobbes’s 1628 translation of Thucydides, published as Eight Bookes of the Peloponesian Warres, in terms of seventeenth-century interest in and debates over the law of nations, or ius gentium. Its aim is to shift the scholarly focus on Hobbes’s translation from its most often assumed context, that of royalism, to what I will argue is a more fitting context, that of the law of nations, and by extension, the intellectual history of international law. Among Hobbes scholars, the fact that the first publication to which Hobbes gave his name was a classical translation is often noted but rarely considered in much depth.1 For many years, orthodoxy held that Hobbes started his brilliant philosophical career with a humanistic period before he encountered the Euclidean geometry that would occasion his turn from humanism to ‘political science’ – a turn variously construed as virtue to vice or vice to virtue, depending on the critic. Recent scholarship has rightly questioned such narratives, noting for instance that Hobbes late in his life wrote a verse autobiography and an anticlerical poem in Latin and translated Homer from the Greek. The insistence that Hobbes’s humanism persisted throughout his lifetime, however, does not fully account for the Thucydides translation: acknowledging Hobbes the humanist only spawns further questions. 2 Now that Hobbes’s Thucydides translation is seen less and less as something from which Hobbes would later turn, questions of what sort of project was signalled by the Thucydides translation come to the fore. -

The title C.P. Cavafy: The Typography of Desire referred to the dual focus of the course: the exceptional materiality of the Greek texts but also their universal lessons for feminist theory. I had taught a few versions of this seminar at Columbia over the past decade, but this was the first time I felt students understood the importance of how Cavafy’s visual poetics related to questions of desire and translation. What made the textuality of Cavafy’s poetry more available and relevant to students this time? Perhaps it had to do with the cultural moment and the increasing priority we give to vision over other senses. Perhaps it was related to my own growing sense, especially with the publication of the enface Oxford edition, that a formal approach, one that paid attention to spelling and typography, was a valid contribution to Cavafy studies. -

Abstract This thesis explores the role of metaphor in the construction of early modern English national identity in the dramatic writing of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. The metaphorical associations of character names and their imagined native or foreign stage settings helped model to English audiences and readers not only their own national community, but also ways in which the representation of collective ‘Englishness’ might involve self-estrangement. The main body of the thesis comprises three case studies: Cleopatra, Kent and Christendom. These topographies -- personal, local and regional -- illustrate how metaphorical complexes shifted against both an evolving body of literary texts and under pressure from changing historical contexts, variously defining individual selves against the collective political nation. Each section explores inter-textual connections between theatrical metaphors and contemporary English non-dramatic texts, placing these within a wider European context, and ends by discussing a relevant play by Shakespeare (Antony and Cleopatra, King Lear and Cymbeline respectively).
