4 63 • 2015 ESSAY JEWISH COMMUNITY MUSEUM AS A RESULT OF CITIZEN ACTIVITIES PETER SALNER PhDr. Peter Salner, DrSc., Institute of Ethnology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Klemensova 19, 813 64, e-mail: [email protected] The study focuses on circumstances under which the Jewish Community Museum was established and officially opened in the Bratislava synagogue in 2012. Already prior to WWII, a respected architect and collector Eugen Barkány came with the idea of opening a museum consisting of Slovak judaica. He followed up his project after the liberation, too. In the second half of the sixties, it seemed that thanks to the Jewish Religious Community (JCR/ŽNO) Bratislava support there would be created a Slovak branch of the Prague Jewish Museum within the premises of the Neolog Bratislava synagogue. However, the project implementation had to be postponed for many years to come: first of all due to Bárkány’s death (1967), demolition of the sy - nagogue giving place to the construction of a new bridge, and the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968. In the beginning of the next millenium, it was Maroš Borský, Art historian and Judaist , who undertook this project. He persuaded the board members of the JCR (ŽNO) Bra - tislava to vacate the already abandoned female gallery of the only preserved synagogue for presentation of Barkány’s collection. Apart from the permanent exhibition, the museum already offered three exhibits entitled: The Shadow of the Past (2013); We Are Here (2014); and Engerau – a Forgotten Story of Petržalka in 2015. Key words: The Jewish Community Museum, E.

  • Ancient Egyptian Coffin in the Slovak National Museum: a Preliminary Research Report
Reports/Opinions REPORTS/OPINIONS Dušan MAGDOLEN The Ancient Egyptian Coffin in the Slovak National Museum: a preliminary research report. (Plates 1 – 2) In the collections of the Natural History Museum of the Slovak National Museum in Bratislava there is a precious and unique artefact from ancient Egypt: a mummiform coffin,1 which by means of acquisition is related to the mummy located inside. The Institute of Oriental Studies of the Slovak Academy of Sciences initiated an Egyptological examination of this artefact and with the abovementioned museum signed a written contract on mutual cooperation, the aim of which is the detailed scholarly examination and evaluation of the artefact. The preciousness and uniqueness of this coffin is based on the fact that of all the ancient Egyptian artefacts in state collections in Slovakia, this artefact has a rich textual decoration with the widest range of hieroglyphic inscriptions. Upon the basis of information known thus far, in the 19th century the coffin and mummy were brought from Egypt to be part of the private collection of curiosities and antiquities of Dr Daniel Schimko, a Protestant priest and a native of today’s Podlužany, who later on taught at the Theological Faculty in Vienna. In his testament he bequeathed his collection to the Evangelical Lyceum in Bratislava. After the Second World War the coffin and mummy came into the possession of the Slovak National Museum (SNM). The coffin and mummy were examined in the 1970s by Czech scholars, who were researching ancient Egyptian artefacts in the former Czechoslovakia.2 The Egyptological examination of the coffin from the Natural History Museum of the SNM was undertaken by Miroslav Verner.

HISTORICKÁ SOCIOLOGIE 2/2019 Shaping the Slovak Identity and the Manifestation Thereof in the Social Iconosphere. The Case of the Slovak National Museum* DAVID VÁCLAVÍK** Formování slovenské identity a jejího projevu v sociální ikonografii. Případ Slovenského národního muzea Abstract: The article deals with the role of the National Museum in the process of creating a Slo- vak national identity. It focuses mainly on the specifics that were associated with the establishment of the Slovak National Museum as an institution. These were closely related to the complicated history of the formation of Slovak national consciousness in the 19th and 20th centuries. It also focuses on analyzing the architecture of the main buildings of the Slovak National Museum and its connection with the concept of the museum as an educational, public, and political institution. Finally, it analyzes two important permanent collections – historical and ethnographic. • Bratislava, Slovakia Destination Guide
Bratislava, Slovakia Destination Guide Overview of Bratislava Bratislava is Slovakia's compact capital and a must for art lovers. Straddling the Danube River and within easy reach of Austria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, the city is ideally located. Its multitude of museums, art galleries, palaces and ornamental churches (all found in and around its historic Old Town) make it the centre for arts and culture in the country, and a worthy destination for culture vultures. Bratislava rightly takes pride in this cultural heritage, with a musical history that stretches back to Mozart, Beethoven and Hummel. Music concerts and ballet performances take place almost daily in the city, and rival those in neighbouring Vienna, Prague and Budapest. The Old Town district is crammed with historical structures representing the different cultures and nations of its past, centring on the famous town square called Hlavné Námestie. The historic Old Town can easily be explored on foot. The 11th-century Gothic Cathedral of St Martin is found within the Old Town, together with numerous Baroque palaces. The Old Town also contains the town hall, which houses the oldest museum in the country, as well as a gate preserved from the medieval city fortifications. One of the most conspicuous structures in the city is Bratislava Castle, a former frontier post for the Roman Empire situated on a plateau overlooking the Danube. While still lagging behind Budapest and Prague in terms of popularity, word of Bratislava's picturesque charm and affordable elegance is spreading and the city is rapidly being thrust into the limelight as a popular European destination.
