Neil Young + Promise of the Real Confirmed for Tinderbox in Denmark Neil Young + Promise of the Real 2019-03-13 10:00 CET Neil Young + Promise of the Real confirmed for Tinderbox in Denmark The Canadian legend will play his only Scandinavian show this summer in Odense and will be joined on the poster by seminal Danish act The Savage Rose It finally happened! After many months of hard work, the deal is finally in place with one of rock's biggest names – the legendary Neil Young. This is the rock icon's only show in Scandinavia on this tour, and for his first concert at Tinderbox Neil Young will be backed by his friends in Promise of the Real. From his time in Buffalo Springfield over the records with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and the many high points that have been released since the late 60s, Neil Young has stood out as one of the most important voices in rock. He is a member of the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame both as a solo artist and as a member of Buffalo Springfield, he has been involved in the founding of both Farm Aid and Bridge School concerts, and he has been nicknamed The Godfather of Grunge. An early highlight of Neil Young's career was the beautiful album "Harvest", which not only went to number one in the United States, but also became the best-selling album that year. The album is today considered to be one of the best releases of the 70’s, and 20 years later the album received a companion piece in the form of "Harvest Moon", which impressively is almost as highly regarded among reviewers and fans. The counterpoint to the two acoustic Harvest-records is a series of records recorded with the band Crazy Horse, whose incredible live energy was captured on "Rust Never Sleeps". Here you find the classic "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)", but the collaboration also shines on songs like "Cortez the Killer", "Mansion on the Hill", and "Cinnamon Girl" and has impressed crowds of thousands for decades. Born in 1945, but as vibrant as ever, the influential musician’s life can best be summed up in a line from one of his greatest hits - "Keep on Rockin" in the Free World". He is a one of a kind songwriter, performer, and humanitarian, and also an uncompromising tornado on stage, who isn’t afraid to venture into long guitar solos, where the feedback cries out so loudly that it can awaken the dead. There is no one like him and this summer Neil Young will for the first time ever visit Odense and headline the festival Tinderbox for his only Scandinavian stop on this tour. The most important Danish band from the same period is The Savage Rose with the wonderful Annisette Koppel in front. The band debuted in 1968 with an album, which today stands as one of the most groundbreaking Danish releases ever. The band could celebrate its 50th anniversary two years ago, but they haven’t slowed down a beat. The new edition of The Savage Rose is ready to deliver one of their usually sublime concerts, when they visit Tinderbox for the first time this summer. The program for Tinderbox 2019 now looks like this: A$AP Rocky, Benal, Billie Eilish, The Chainsmokers, Crown the Beast, Dermot Kennedy, Diplo, Dropkick Murphys, Duran Duran, Dzeko, EDX, Faustix, Gnags, Greta Van Fleet, Karenina, L.O.C., Lana Del Rey, Lil Uzi Vert, Lost Frequencies, Loud Luxury, The Lumineers , Lydmor, Macklemore, Martin Jensen, The Minds of 99, Neil Young + Promise of the Real, Nervo, Peter Sommer & Tiggerne, Phlake, Rick Astley, The Savage Rose, Sheryl Crow, Sigrid, Skunk Anansie, Suspekt, Swedish House Mafia, Trouble is, and Wolfmother. • Death, Travel and Pocahontas the Imagery on Neil Young's Album
Hugvísindasvið Death, Travel and Pocahontas The imagery on Neil Young’s album Rust Never Sleeps Ritgerð til B.A.-prófs Hans Orri Kristjánsson September 2008 Háskóli Íslands Hugvísindasvið Enskuskor Death, Travel and Pocahontas The imagery on Neil Young’s album Rust Never Sleeps Ritgerð til B.A.-prófs Hans Orri Kristjánsson Kt.: 260180-2909 Leiðbeinandi: Sveinn Yngvi Egilsson September 2008 Abstract The following essay, “Death, Travel and Pocahontas,” seeks to interpret the imagery on Neil Young’s album Rust Never Sleeps. The album was released in July 1979 and with it Young was venturing into a dialogue of folk music and rock music. On side one of the album the sound is acoustic and simple, reminiscent of the folk genre whereas on side two Young is accompanied by his band, The Crazy Horse, and the sound is electric, reminiscent of the rock genre. By doing this, Young is establishing the music and questions of genre and the interconnectivity between folk music and rock music as one of the theme’s of the album. Young explores these ideas even further in the imagery of the lyrics on the album by using popular culture icons. The title of the album alone symbolizes the idea of both death and mortality, declaring that originality is transitory. Furthermore he uses recurring images, such as death, to portray his criticism on the music business and lack of originality in contemporary musicians. Ideas of artistic freedom are portrayed through images such as nature and travel using both ships and road to symbolize the importance of re-invention.

  • Songs of the Century
Songs of the Century T. Austin Graham hat is the time, the season, the historical context of a popular song? When is it most present in the world, best able Wto reflect, participate in, or construct some larger social reality? This essay will consider a few possible answers, exploring the ways that a song can exist in something as brief as a passing moment and as broad as a century. It will also suggest that when we hear those songs whose times have been the longest, we might not be hearing “songs” at all. Most people are likely to have an intuitive sense for how a song can contract and swell in history, suited to a certain context but capable of finding any number of others. Consider, for example, the various uses to which Joan Didion is able to put music in her generation-defining essay “Slouching Towards Bethlehem,” a meditation on drifting youth and looming apocalypse in the days of the Haight-Ashbury counterculture. Songs create a powerful sense of time and place throughout the piece, with Didion nodding to the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quick- silver Messenger Service, and “No Milk Today” by Herman’s Hermits, “a song I heard every morning in the cold late spring of 1967 on KRFC, the Flower Power Station, San Francisco.”1 But the music that speaks most directly and reverberates most widely in the essay is “For What It’s Worth,” the Buffalo Springfield single whose chiming guitar fifths and famous chorus—“Stop, hey, what’s that sound / Everybody look what’s going down”—make it instantly recognizable nearly five decades later.2 To listen to “For What It’s Worth” on Didion’s pages is to hear a song that exists in many registers and seems able to suffuse everything, from a snatch of conversation, to a set of political convictions, to nothing less than “The ’60s” itself.

Children, what's that sound? Buffalo Springfield reunited By Marco R. della Cava, USA Today, 10/25 MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Wow, man. There's tie-dyed Woodstock emcee Wavy Gravy getting wanded by security. Backstage, check out psychedelic album-art maestro Stanley Mouse, sketching up a storm. On stage? How about Buffalo Springfield, ripping through nearly a dozen of the band's hits? Who says you can't go back? Saturday's '60s throwback came courtesy of Neil and Pegi Young's 24th annual benefit concert to support the Bridge School, which educates 1 / 7 Children, what's that sound? Buffalo Springfield reunited children with severe impairments. Although the lineup for the all-acoustic, eight-hour affair was typically eclectic, the undeniable focus was on Young's first public reunion with remaining original members of his old band, formed with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay in the musical cauldron of 1966 and disbanded two years later. Springboard to fame The surviving trio did their late bandmates, Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin, proud. Opening with a slightly slowed version of the Furay-led On the Way Home, Stills and Young dutifully fell into supporting roles on harmony. 2 / 7 Children, what's that sound? Buffalo Springfield reunited Furay, dressed in a black cowboy shirt, stayed in the spotlight with A Child's Claim to Fame, Do I Have to Come Right Out and Say It and Kind Woman. But the men flanking him would soon show their stuff, making it instantly clear why Springfield was fated to be a passing phenomenon.

Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young) [Verse 1] I want to live With a cinnamon girl I could be happy The rest of my life With a cinnamon girl [Chorus] A dreamer of pictures I run in the night You see us together Chasing the moonlight My cinnamon girl [Verse 2] Ten silver saxes A bass with a bow The drummer relaxes And waits between shows For his cinnamon girl [Chorus] [Outro] Pa sent me money now I'm going to make it somehow I need another chance You see your baby loves to dance Yeah yeah yeah 37 "Cinnamon Girl" debuted on the 1969 album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, which was also Young's first album with backing band Crazy Horse. Released as a single the following year, it reached #55 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970. Like two other songs from Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Down by the River", Young wrote "Cinnamon Girl" while he was suffering from the flu with a high fever at his home in Topanga, California. This song displays the very prominent role played by Danny Whitten in the sound of Young's early recordings. The vocals are a duet, with Whitten singing the high harmony against Young's low harmony. (The 45 rpm single mix of the song, in addition to being in mono and cutting off the guitar outro, features Whitten's vocal more prominently than the album version.) Young performed the song on his then-recently acquired Gibson Les Paul, "Old Black". The lyrics have the singer daydreaming for a girl to love, singing that he waits "between shows" for his lover.
