The Incredible Adventures of Cinnamon Girl Written by Melissa Keil HC: $17.95 / 9781561459056 / 5¼ x 8 / 352 pages / April 2016 YA fiction, ages 12+ All rights available / Territory: US, Territories, Dependencies, Philippines, Canada

Alba and her best friends have just graduated from high school and are off to…well they’re not sure yet. One thing is for sure though: Alba is not ready to leave her beloved Eden Valley, her best friend Grady, her new comic character Cinnamon Girl, or her mother’s bakery. As it turns out, she and her friends might not have time to go anywhere, if the quack from a YouTube video turns out to have correctly predicted the end of the world, which he says will come on New Year’s Eve and will leave only Eden Valley standing.

Suddenly, all sorts of crazy people flood the valley—setting up tents, renting out houses and rooms, and cleaning out the grocery store in anticipation of the end of the world. Then another unexpected visitor arrives to the valley: Alba’s and Grady’s childhood-best-friend- turned-semi-famous-soap-opera-actor Daniel. He, his perfect abs, and his cheesy soap opera face have come home for some publicity.

Daniel’s return marks the beginning of tensions between Alba and Grady, and prompts discussions about Alba’s future. While her friends make plans to move on to college or to big cities after the New Year, she remains too frightened to follow her dreams of studying art and becoming a major comic book artist. Who would want a big change like that after the dramatic motorcycle death of their father several years prior? Definitely not Alba.

While she clings to the past, Eden Valley races forward, and the clock ticks down to the end of the world. Alba resists change until Grady forces her to confront it. They wind up fighting for the first time pretty much ever, and miserable to boot. Even Cinnamon Girl is affected by Alba’s confusion, refusing to develop into a specific character or enter into a proper storyline.

When Daniel attempts to kiss Alba and then gives her a diet book, she springs into motion. She rides a motorcycle for the first time since her father’s accident, overcoming her past and liberating herself from her crippling fear of the future. Grady confronts Daniel, intending to punch him for trying to kiss the girl he’s been in love with for seventeen years (and for telling her she needs to diet), and winds up getting punched instead.

Grady takes off, and Alba chases after him. Once they reunite, Alba realizes her love for him and they kiss as the countdown to the end of the world hits zero. The world does not end. Alba’s friends reveal that they put Daniel up to hitting on her—they were all trying to push Alba and Grady together.

As the summer ends, her friends move on from the Valley, Daniel returns to acting, and Alba and Grady head off to the city to attend the university—together.

The Somewhat True Adventures of Sammy Shine Written by Henry Cole HC: $16.95 / 9781561458660 / 6 x 8 / 272 pages / April 2016 Illustrated fiction, ages 8 –12 All rights available / Territory: World

When Hank’s brother Jimmy sends Hank’s pet mouse Sammy Shine up in the Spirit of Sammy, a remote controlled airplane, Hank worries that he’ll never see his beloved pet again. But Sammy rises to the occasion and takes control of the tiny aircraft. Everything goes well until the gas tank is almost empty. The plane crashes into the trees, leaving Sammy stranded in a world that is completely new to him. Sammy finds himself surrounded by a crowd of mice armed with sharp spears. To his great surprise, the mice all bow down to him. To them, this mouse who has come down from the sky is obviously a great spirit who possesses the power of magic. The head guard offers Sammy food and shelter at their Lodge. Sammy explains his predicament to Osmund, the elderly leader of the mice, and asks for help in recovering and repairing his airplane. During the festive celebration to welcome Sammy, a sinister-looking weasel named Mustela appears. This longtime enemy of the mice, a bully who wants to take over their lands, demands that Sammy divulge the secret of his flying machine. Realizing he is outnumbered, Mustela leaves, vowing to follow through on his threats. The next day, Sammy sets out to recover his aircraft, accompanied by Phoebe, Osmund’s granddaughter. They finally locate the crash site, but the Spirit of Sammy is gone! Osmund advises Sammy to search for a raccoon named Goggles, the only one in the Great Woods who might be able to help recover and repair the airplane. Refusing to endanger any of the other mice, Sammy sets out alone on the quest for Goggles. On the way he meets and befriends an injured crow, a newt, and a shrew, all of whom agree to help him. Eventually Phoebe catches up with them and joins in the search. Just as they are nearing Goggles’s hideout, they are attacked by Mustela, leading a dangerous band of flying voles. Before Sammy can escape, one of the voles picks him up and flies away with him. Sammy awakens to find that he is imprisoned. Mustela makes it clear that he will stop at nothing to get the Spirit. But while Mustela and his army are sleeping, Phoebe helps Sammy escape. They rejoin their other friends and find their way to Goggles’s workshop. Sammy is overjoyed when the raccoon agrees to help them and informs them that he is the one who took the damaged airplane. In fact, he has already repaired the craft. Just as Sammy and his friends have boarded the plane and are ready to go, they hear Mustela and his evil rat army approaching. Goggles traps Mustela, and at the very last minute, Sammy manages to get the plane in the air. Sammy steers toward Hank’s town, and they arrive just as a parade has started. Sammy has no idea how to stop the plane. The crow uses his wings to brake during the downward flight, and they land right in the middle of Main Street. Hank and Jimmy are delighted to have Sammy and the plane back, and they adopt the other animals from the Great Woods. All goes well for a while, but the friends begin to long for another adventure. As the story closes, they set off in the Spirit of Sammy, heading north toward the Woods.

Basanta is an eleven-year-old girl who lives with her family in a poor community in India. Along with her mother, she works as a servant in the Big House. When Basanta finds her young mistress’s missing ring—a ring she has admired and longed to own herself—she impulsively takes it and hides it in her family’s hut. But owning the ring is not as wonderful as she had dreamed. When Rukmani, a girl in Basanta’s community, shows Basanta items she has stolen from her mistress, Basanta gets a little boastful and accidentally reveals that she has something valuable as well. That night, Basanta wakes up to find someone has tried to break into her family’s hut and the ring is missing. Basanta believes Rukmani is the thief, but a few days later, she eventually finds her little sister choking on what turns out to be the ring. Basanta’s mother advises her to return the ring and tell the truth. When she does, her mistress gives it back to her; since her mother has already bought her a bigger and better ring. Basanta’s best friend Lali tells her that her widowed mother is running out of food to feed their family. Basanta does what she can to help; she even tries to sell the ring to the friendly rice merchant, but he gives it back to her. Instead, she and Lali make and sell tamarind candy and give Lali’s mother the proceeds. All of the children are looking forward to the annual Great Battle of Kites. The two contenders are Paki and Bala, a beggar. Basanta takes tamarind seed bets from her friends. After multiple battles, Bala wins, with a little help from Basanta. Basanta’s beloved stray dog Kalu has been missing. Basanta and Lali learn that Bala has started training Kalu to perform tricks in order to earn money. Basanta realizes that Bala needs the dog more than she does, and accepts that Kalu is now his. But when Lali’s baby brother Hari becomes ill, she suggests that she and Lali help plan a dog show, in exchange for a commission, which can be used to buy medicine. With Divali, the Festival of Lights, just around the corner, everyone is looking forward to the celebratory firecrackers. Ganga, Lali’s crush, is known for having the ones that make the most noise. Basanta realizes that Paki and his brother Raju are planning to steal some of Ganga’s firecrackers in order to use them to ruin the dog show. The three of them lock Paki in the buffalo house until the show is over. When they go back to free him, they find that Ganga’s father has already let him out and Paki has returned the firecrackers. The next morning, Paki and Raju tease Basanta; as a result, her ring is lost. A distraught Basanta looks for consolation, but her mother only reminds her that gold and money are not that important and that she already has what really matters—her family. On Divali, Basanta learns that her mother gave Basanta’s commission from the dog show back to Bala, because he needed it more. When her mother learns that the money was for Lali, she gives Basanta some of her own money to give to Lali’s family. The story ends with Basanta running to catch up with her friends and enjoy their Divali fireworks.

Aliya already struggles with trying to fit in, feeling confident enough to talk to the cute boy, or brave enough to stand up to mean kids—the fact that she’s Muslim is just another part of her life. At home, she loves her multigenerational Indian family, living with her brother and parents as well as Amma, her grandmother, and Badi Amma, her great-grandmother. Her parents are not as strict as some of the other Muslims in her community, which makes blending in at school much easier, that is, until the arrival of Marwa, a Moroccan girl who shares Aliya’s faith, if not her culture. Marwa’s quiet confidence leads Aliya to wonder even more about who she is, what she believes, and where she fits in. In religious school, Aliya is assigned a project called Steps to Success, which requires her to look within and figure out who she is and what she stands for. She struggles to find a direction for the assignment, but ultimately begins writing letters to Allah, exploring her dreams and fears and hoping that with hard work and faith, something beautiful will grow in the garden of her imaan—the small quiet place inside where belief unfolds, one petal at a time. Aliya’s friends at religious school represent a wide spectrum of belief and experience. Nafees is a recent immigrant from Pakistan. Despite strict and conservative parents, she is a bit wild and has already found an American boyfriend. Sehr, who comes from a more liberal family, has decided to begin wearing the hijab full-time. Aliya marvels at the bravery and confidence of her friends and wonders if she will ever have the courage to be like them. At school, Marwa seems to be finding her place. Despite some teasing over her hijab and her dietary habits, she makes friends. She tries to pursue a friendship with Aliya, but Aliya keeps her distance, uncomfortable with the association. This year, Thanksgiving occurs during Ramadan. Aliya is now old enough to fast during the school week, rather than just on the weekends as she has done in the past. But doing so will call attention to her otherness, something that she’s still not comfortable with. Still, she steels herself, believing it’s the right thing to do. Choti Dahdi, a troublesome great-grandaunt, complicates things, coming for an extended visit and taking over the household. Aliya finds it hard to begin her fast, actually missing the first day, but ultimately she is able to persevere. As Aliya and Marwa both sit out lunch in the cafeteria, they talk about their fasts and their experiences and grow closer. Austin, the school bully, has begun harassing them both. He mocks Marwa’s hijab and she stands up to him, putting him in his place with a few carefully chosen words. Impressed, Aliya realizes that she has been unfairly blaming Marwa for her own embarrassment and shame. With her newfound courage, Aliya decides to run for student council representative in order to get closer to her crush, Josh, and to beat Juliana, a mean girl who is also running for the position. Juliana tries to buy the student vote with baseball cards and bracelets, and Aliya feels she needs to call some attention to herself. She “borrows” Choti Dahdi’s gorgeous prayer beads and shows them off at school, allowing people to believe that the beads are actually a valuable bracelet. When the beads break, Aliya is forced to confess the theft to her family. Admitting her wrong-doing and her flawed motivation ultimately proves comfortable. When Aliya overhears Juliana making fun of Marwa, who is also running for class representative, she stands up for her. Then she finds the confidence to confront Austin as well. Juliana wins the election after Aliya fumbles her campaign speech, but Aliya is able to be a good sport and congratulate her opponent, easing some of the tension in their relationship. Marwa is chosen to be her class’s representative, to Aliya’s amazement. At the end of the year, Aliya learns that Marwa is moving again; her father has gotten another job. They promise to remain friends and Aliya is determined to remember what she has learned from Marwa: “What’s in our head can do more harm than what’s on it.”

Claude at the Beach Written by Alex T. Smith PB: $7.95 / 9781561459193 / 5⅛ x 7⅜ / 96 pages / April 2016 Illustrated fiction, ages 7 – 9 All rights available / Territory: US, Territories, Dependencies, Canada

While Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes “whizz around the house, getting ready to go to work”, Claude wonders what today’s adventure will be. Inspiration strikes once he stops pretending to be asleep; they will go on vacation to the beach. Although Claude has never been on vacation before, he knows he should pack “useful” things like a tambourine, a lampshade, sticky tape, slightly squished sandwiches, whipped cream, and Mr. Shinyshoes’ underpants. Sir Bobblysock travels lighter with just a towel and a stylish pair of shades, which he immediately puts to good use once the two reach their destination. Claude notices that everyone else on the beach seems to be in their underwear! He falters only for a moment before devising a ready-to-strut swimsuit from the too-big underpants and sticky tape. Now he’s ready for some fun, but first must rescue a man from a shark (the lifeguard is too preoccupied.) Diplomatically, he offers the shark a juicy bone baguette from under his beret, which the shark happily accepts. Claude doggy paddles the man back to shore and is treated as a hero. He decides to celebrate with an 11 o’clock snack. Claude and Sir Bobblysock go to the ice cream shop, where all of the tourists around them are speaking French. They mistakenly assume that one must speak another language when on vacation, and attempt to communicate with the shopkeeper en français. They try to ask for juicy bone flavor ice cream, but their order is lost in translation. Instead, they score several ice cream cones, a flag, and inflatable tube. Well-nourished and still on a lucky streak, they unknowingly enter a sandcastle-building competition. Sir Bobblysock surprises everyone with his exceptional talent, and wins first prize—a pair of snazzy flip-flops. While resting on their towels, the duo is approached by a family of pirates—Porthole Pete, Deadeye Denise, and Slopbucket Stu. Claude accepts their invitation to join them in their quest to find a “chest full of goodies”. Sir Bobblysock, feeling skeptical and seasick, follows along. They board the pirates’ ship, The Damp Dog. The crew reaches their destination island in only a few minutes. After searching here, there, and everywhere, they decide there is no other place left to look than under that giant “X” made of stones. They successfully excavate the treasure chest. But just as they are about to leave with their booty, they are confronted by Naughty Nora and her naughty pirate crew! Our heroes try to outrun these menacing pirates, but Claude’s cumbersome suitcase falls, the contents scatter, and they find themselves surrounded. Luckily, it just so happens that Nora and her crew need a lampshade, tambourine, and whipped cream, so Nora suggests a trade—The Damp Dog crew can keep the treasure, if they will hand over Claude’s suitcase. Claude accepts, and returns to the ship as a hero for the second time today. Though Porthole Pete invites them to join the crew permanently, Claude and Sir B decide they’ve had enough excitement. Satisfied with the day, they say their goodbyes and head back home with some treasure. Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes return from work to discover a house full of sand, gold coins, and Claude and Sir Bobblysock pretending to be asleep.

Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes have left for work. What will Claude and Sir Bobblysock do today? Claude convinces Sir Bobblysock to go for a visit to the countryside. There is plenty to see there, grass, flowers, even a rabbit. A peculiar smell leads them to Woollybottom Farm, where they meet Mrs. Cowpat, the farmer. They offer to help her get ready for the county fair, which will be held in her fields later that day. Claude gathers eggs from Mrs. Cluck’s House of Hens, tries his hand at being a sheepdog, and rides a horse like a real cowboy. When Mrs. Cowpat asks Claude to wash her pigs for the Most Beautiful Pigs competition, he not only cleans them but also gives them a spa-like experience.

Later, the fair begins. Claude enjoys the baking, vegetable, and pig competitions until he hears someone crying for help—it’s one of the snooty-looking judges, and he’s being chased by a bull! Claude musters up all of his courage and lassoes the bull, saving the day. Mrs. Cowpat asks Claude to stay and become a farmer, but he decides to decline. If he took up farming, he’d miss his cozy bed and his owners too much. So Mrs. Cowpat gives them a ride home on her tractor. Claude and Sir Bobblysock settle down for a nap, just in time for Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes to come in from work. They are a bit puzzled by the peculiar smell, but they don’t have a clue about Claude’s countryside adventure!

Sales Handle: How do you explain what the roar of a roller coaster sounds like? Or the sound of ocean waves crashing on the shore? As a young boy tries to describe sounds to his two deaf parents through sign language, he realizes how difficult it must be not to experience sound and how hard it is to explain sound through words.

Description: A Brooklyn family takes an outing to Coney Island, where they enjoy the rides, the food, and the sights. The father longs to know how everything sounds. Though his son does his best to interpret their noisy surroundings through sign language, he struggles to find the words to convey the subtle differences between the "loud" of the ocean and the "loud" of a roller coaster. When the family drops in at the library on the way home, the boy makes a discovery—perhaps the words he needs are within reach, after all.

Description: Mama is expecting a baby and Little Rabbit is going to be a big brother! He's full of plans; he will teach the baby to play all sorts of games and be the best big brother ever. And when Mama has triplets, it looks like there will be three times the fun. But having babies around might not be as much fun as Little Rabbit thought. They sleep and cry a lot. They are too young to throw a ball and they get their sticky paws on all his toys. They take up all of Mama's and Papa's time. "It's not fair!" cries Little Rabbit. As it turns out, the new babies adore Little Rabbit. And one night when a tired Mama and Papa are at their wit's end, Little Rabbit comes to the rescue, consoling his siblings and rocking them to sleep. Now Little Rabbit understands what an important job it is to be a big brother.
