I have always vaguely been a Dr Who fan, and although I don't think that stylistically or emotionally it has reached the heights that it did with Jon Pertwee, and even Patrick Troughton back in the day, I have followed much of the series since it came back in 2005. 2 Another happened last year when the Rolling Stones dragged Mick Taylor away from undeserved obscurity, and played a series of barnstorming gigs including Glastonbury Festival, and another is going on at the moment and started last night. King Crimson have been, unarguable, one of the most idiosyncratic and artistically interesting bands for forty five years now, since they formed in 1968. Leader Robert Fripp left the music business some years ago, and King Crimson seem to have been on indefinite hiatus since about 2008. However, last year Fripp announced that the band will return, and this week, the new seven piece line-up played their first shows. The silence surrounding these shows is deafening. I spoke to Jakko Jakszyk who is the second guitarist and vocalist with the new King Crimson, last week on Facebook. He was understandably cagey about Dear Friends, what was happening. I was always impressed by Penny Rimbaud’s statement that the later Crass singles were issued as “tactical responses” to given situations. I started off writing and editing Fanzines, and it is only for reasons of my own that I decided to issue this magazine like Dear Friends, clockwork every Saturday, more recently every Friday. When John Steinbeck was once asked how he went about writing, he replied, ‘With a pencil.’ Some writers are reluctant to give away too much about their inspiration, their influences, their thinking and writing and editing processes, as if wanting to perpetuate the Romantic fallacy that genius and inspiration just strike and that the lucky, ‘gifted’ individual is driven to pick up a pen and write down what the Muse dictates. Despite his prodigious gifts and his long-standing success as a novelist, Michael Moorcock is only too happy to share the secrets of his craft. In a 1992 book, Death Is No Obstacle , which is essentially a long transcript of interviews the writer Colin Greenland had with Moorcock in 1990, Moorcock happily reveals some of the ‘tricks of the trade’ of writing genre fiction, as well as thoughtfully exploring his own relationship with various genres of popular fiction. The book isn’t easy to get hold of – copies tend to go for around £50 online. I’m indebted to my university library, which owns a signed copy. In a previous post on Interesting Literature , I’ve outlined some of Moorcock’s top tips for writing a genre novel in a matter of days, which are taken from the first chapter of Death Is No Obstacle . The rest of the book covers, in order, comedy and science fiction (including a revealing discussion about Moorcock’s own self-confessed failure to write straight science fiction, partly because he has no great love for much mid-century SF), comic strips and commedia dell’Arte, didactic fiction (featuring Behold the Man , Moorcock’s remarkable novel about a time traveller who ends up living in the time of the Crucifixion), non-linear fiction, where it went wrong (featuring, perhaps surprisingly, a discussion of the ‘failure’ of Gloriana ), and imitating and remodelling (Conrad et al). -

The absent presence of progressive rock in the British music press, 1968-1974 Chris Anderton and Chris Atton Abstract The upsurge of academic interest in the genre known as progressive rock has taken much for granted. In particular, little account has been taken of how discourses surrounding progressive rock were deployed in popular culture in the past, especially within the music press. To recover the historical place of the music and its critical reception, we present an analysis of three British weekly music papers of the 1960s and 1970s: Melody Maker, New Musical Express and Sounds. We find that there appears to be relatively little consensus in the papers studied regarding the use and meaning of the term ‘progressive’, pointing to either multiple interpretations or an instability of value judgments and critical claims. Its most common use is to signify musical quality – to connect readers with the breadth of new music being produced at that time, and to indicate a move away from the ‘underground’ scene of the late 1960s. 1 Introduction Beginning in the 1990s there has been an upsurge of academic interest in the genre known as progressive rock, with the appearance of book-length studies by Edward Macan (“Rocking”) and Bill Martin (“Music of Yes”, “Listening”), to which we might add, though not strictly academic, Paul Stump. The 2000s have seen further studies of similar length, amongst them Paul Hegarty & Martin Halliwell, Kevin Holm-Hudson (“Progressive”, “Genesis”) and Edward Macan (“Endless”), in addition to scholarly articles by Jarl A. Ahlkvist, Chris Anderton (“Many-headed”), Chris Atton (“Living”), Kevin Holm-Hudson “Apocalyptic”), and Jay Keister & Jeremy L.
