In 1983, when The Physiological Society started publishing its magazine, most medical schools in the UK had a physiology department, there was no national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), no journal publishing short (trends-like) physiological review articles and most neurophysiologists regarded themselves as physiologists rather than neurobiologists. The first RAE was conducted in 1986 and in that same year NIPS (News in Physiological Sciences now Physiology) was launched by the American Physiological Society (APS) and the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS). At last, Sydney Ringer is properly commemorated at St Mary’s Church, Lastingham, North Yorkshire, where he was buried nearly 100 years ago.
