  • Book Review the Outsider 2
The life of the Master Story Teller One of the first books that I read, which fell under the category of thrillers, was “The Day of the Jackal”. This was the story of a assassin who was hired to kill President Charles de Gaulle of France and came within an inch of achieving his target. It was edge of the seat suspense from page one till the last as the book traced the movement of the hired killer from Vienna to Paris and the efforts of the French Police to trace and stop him. As one closed the book after reading the last page, one could not help feeling empathy for the main protagonist who had come very close to achieving his goal, only to be thwarted by a combination of sheer misfortune and some excellent work by the police. The movie by the same name based on the book was also a huge hit. Frederick Forsyth became a household name amongst readers of English language fiction with that book. He wrote and published 18 more works, 16 fiction and two non fiction, and all of them achieved best seller status. Readers all over the world would wait anxiously for his books to be published while a new genre of writers emerged who followed his path and penned works involving espionage, intrigue and international conspiracy. Not surprisingly he came to be known as the “Master Story Teller”. Hence it was with plenty of curiosity and anticipation that I started reading his autobiography titled “The Outsider: My life in intrigue”. The book details the extraordinary life that he has led right from his childhood till the present and outlines the unique and varied experiences that he had during his 76 years.

This Note entails an examina- tion of the circumstances of that trial. The narrow focus here will be the aspects of procedural and substantive fairness in the trial, while the broader concern will be the impact of this trial on the development of the laws of war, particularly as regards the status of mercenaries under international law. This is only the beginning of the larger inquiry which the legal community must undertake.

Abstract This essay explores upon two inter-related issues: (1) the course of America’s raging Afghan war as actually experienced on the ground as contrasted with the Pentagon and mainstream media narrative and (2) the unrelenting Obama/Pentagon efforts to control the public narrative of that war.1 As the real war on the ground spread geographically and violence intensified, U.S. efforts to construct a positive spin re-doubled. An examination of bodies – of foreign occupa- tion forces and innocent Afghan civilians – reveals a clear trade-off.

VICTIMS OF HISTORY AND CULTURE: WOMEN IN THE NOVELS OF KHALED HOSSEINI AND SIBA SHAKIB ABSTRACT THESIS V : SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF IN t ENGLISH j^ BY JAMSHEED AHMAD T7880 UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF Dr. Aysha Munira Rasheed DEPftRTMKNT OF ENGblSH ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY AUGARH -202002 (INDIA) 2012 T7880 Abstract The thesis entitled "Victimsof History and Culture: Women in the Novels of Khaled Hosseini and Siba Shakib" has been chapterised into four chapters. It attempts to discuss the victimization of women characters in the hands of history and culture. Women and History Though the novels concerned are not historical in the strict sense of the word, the title of the thesis demands a parallel study of literary (the novels) and non-literary (the history of the country) texts. Both the novelists have drawn in abundance from the historical happenings of Afghanistan. The unstable political history of Afghanistan which had been marked by power struggles, armed revolts and mass uprisings had a direct bearing on the social fabric of this multi-ethnic country which is well mirrored in the novels. History of Afghanistan stands a testimony to the fact that the issues related to women have always been one of the various reasons for unstable polity. A cursory examination of history reveals that at various junctures in the history, the issues related to women have been among the reasons behind the fall of various regimes. Afghanistan is a country with deep patriarchal roots and a tribal-based family structure. In Afghanistan, family is at the heart of the society.

  • Counterintelligence in the Kingdom and the States
Counterintelligence in the Kingdom and the States A Historical Comparison of the FBI and MI5 Matthew Kalkavage Master’s Thesis Advisor: Professor Arthur Hulnick Submitted: April 14, 2014 Executive Summary The United States and the United Kingdom have different kinds of organizations to defend their national security from espionage and terrorist threats. The US relies on the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), a law enforcement agency with counterintelligence functions, while the UK depends on the Security Service (MI5), a purely counterintelligence agency without law enforcement powers, to meet these challenges. The purpose of this paper is to examine the benefits, detriments, and the key motivations behind each system’s development for the sake of showing that MI5 has ultimately served the UK better than the FBI has served the US in the realm of counterintelligence. The historical trajectory of the Security Service is one of constant honing of counterintelligence work from its very inception. The history of the FBI reveals an organization that was initially established for law enforcement purposes and has never completely abandoned its preference for that mission amid US governmental pressure to become more intelligence- driven in times of international crisis (especially during World War I, World War II, and parts of the Cold War). The counterintelligence practices of the Service and the Bureau throughout their histories illustrate the deficiencies and proficiencies of each, which mutually contribute to the understanding of key counterintelligence qualities that are presented in the final chapter. These attributes are an overall penchant for secrecy, an external orientation, and a preventative operational culture.

  • The Shepherd
The Shepherd By: Frederick Forsyth Category: fiction short stories Synopsis: On Christmas Eve 1957, alone in the cockpit of his Vampire, an RAF pilot is returning from Germany to Lakenheath on leave - 66 minutes of trouble-free, routine flying. Then, out over the North Sea, the fog begins to close in, radio contact ceases, and the compass goes haywire. For a brief moment, while waiting for the control tower to clear me for take-off, I glanced out through the perspex cockpit canopy at the surrounding German countryside. It lay white and crisp beneath the crackling December moon. Behind me lay the boundary fence of the Royal Air Force base, and beyond the fence, as I had seen while swinging my little fighter into line with the take-off runway, the sheet of snow covering the flat farmland stretched away to the line of the pine trees, two miles distant in the night yet so clear I could almost see the shapes of the trees themselves. Ahead of me as I waited for the voice of the controller to come through the headphones was the runway itself, a slick black ribbon of tarmac, flanked by twin rows of bright-burning lights, illuminating the solid path cut earlier by the snow-plows. Behind the lights were the humped banks of the morning's snow, frozen hard once again where the snow-plow blades had pushed them. Far away to my right the airfield tower stood up like a single glowing candle amid the hangars where the muffled aircraft men were even now closing down the station for the night.

As soon as he crosses Paris, he gets a look of the dark clouds that were a sign of the upcoming storm.

International cooperation is ever more necessary in meeting these challenges. The NYU Center on International Cooperation (CIC) works to enhance international responses to conflict, insecurity, and scarcity through applied research and direct engagement with multilateral institutions and the wider policy community. CIC’s programs and research activities span the spectrum of conflict, insecurity, and scarcity issues. This allows us to see critical inter-connections and highlight the coherence often necessary for effective response.
