Directions from Noordoewer To Sossusvlei Lodge (via Grünau, Keetmanshoop, Mariental, Maltahöhe & Hammerstein) There are a number of alternative routes to follow from the South African - Namibian border to Sossusvlei Lodge. However, the route described below makes optimum use of good asphalt surfaced roads and allows one to travel at the maximum speed of 120 kilometres per hour for a greater distance. The average maximum recommended speed over gravel surfaces is 80 kilometres per hour. Total Distance : 805 Kilometres Road Legend : Average Duration : ±8 Hours B = Major Route (Asphalt) Road Surfaces : Asphalt – 530 kms C = Minor Road (Gravel) Gravel – 275 kms D = District Road (Gravel) o Once you have passed through the South African (Vioolsdrif) and Namibian (Noordoewer) custom posts on either side of the Orange River, leave Noordoewer on the B1 North. o Travel for 139 kilometres to Grünau and then a further 163 kilometres on the B1 to Keetmanshoop. This is a major town en-route and a stop here is recommended. Refuel, stretch the legs and obtain refreshments. o Please note that not all refuelling points indicated on the local maps at small towns are always still there or have fuel available. Always stay on the safe side and refuel at major towns along the way. o Continue on the B1 for another 217 kilometres past Tses, Asab and Gibeon turn-off to just before the town of Mariental. Turn left onto the C19 at the Maltahöhe intersection (T- junction). If you are not sure of your fuel status, rather continue on to Mariental at this point and refuel there. -

Part 2 Supplemental information of Logistics Hub Master Plan 10. Demand Forecast 10. Demand Forecast 10.1 Introduction The future freight demand relevant to Namibia is forecast for (i) the estimation of potential of transit cargo demand through Namibia, (ii) evaluation of existing infrastructure such as road and railway for the future growth of freight demand and contribution to planning of improvement and development plan. For that purpose, the future freight demand is forecast considering the growth of international trade of neighbouring countries, assumption of international transit cargo through Namibia and by surface transport modes. The future freight demand is calculated for the following cases. • Target years of demand forecast are 2013 as existing, 2015, 2020, 2025 and further 2045. • For the potential transit cargo through Namibia, international trade of goods between Zambia, Botswana and Europe, America, Angola and South Africa are included. Especially, transit cargo of Zambia and Botswana is forecast for two cases, namely, (i) As a base case, same ratio of existing transit cargo through Namibia of international trade of Zambia / Botswana with Europe / America is applied to future international trade of Zambia and Botswana with Europe / America, and (ii) as a maximum case, 100% of trade of Zambia / Botswana with Europe / America is assumed to pass through Namibia. • Future freight volume by transport mode, namely, road and railway is computed by (i) existing modal share by origin, destination and type of commodity, and (ii) proposed socio-economical modal share and service. BRIEF INSIGHTS INTO NAMIBIA’S TRNSPORT GEOGRAPHY - A sovereign country located along the Atlantic Coast of Southern Africa. - Shares borders with Angola and Zambia to the north, Botswana to the east, and South Africa to the south. - Namibia is a member state of the: o United Nations (UN), o Southern African Development Community (SADC), o African Union (AU), and o the Commonwealth of Nations. - It is named after the Namib Desert. - The capital and largest city, Windhoek, is in the centre of the country. NAMIBIA: Satellite view NAMIBIA: MAJOR ROADS - The Trans-Kalahari Corridor is a paved highway corridor that provides a direct route from Walvis Bay and Windhoek in central Namibia, through Botswana, to Johannesburg and Pretoria in Gauteng province in South Africa. - Officially opened in 1998, the corridor also includes railway lines from Walvis Bay as far as Gobabis in Namibia, and from Johannesburg as far as Lobatse in Botswana. - The Maputo Corridor provides an onwards connection from Gauteng to Maputo in Mozambique. - Together these corridors form a unique road connection between Walvis Bay on the Atlantic and Maputo on the Indian Ocean; the connected regions are also known as the Walvis Bay–Botswana–Gauteng–Maputo development corridor Road - Namibia's road network is regarded as one of the best on the continent; road construction and maintenance adheres to international standards. -

Additional items belonging to this convolute were found in 2009 and 2011 and added, without changing the previous numbering. The convolute had apparently served as reference tool in the office of previous Chief Archivists, and consists of manuscripts of diverse origin. Some are signed by J.H. Esterhuyse (Chief Archivist at the Windhoek Archives Depot 1946-1956) and N. Mossolow (a local historian); most unsigned mss. were probably written by by the same authors. There are also a few original documents from archival files (probably duplicates taken out at appraisal). While most texts are in Afrikaans, some are in English or German. Appraisal and description It was decided to leave the convolute intact, although some of the material is certainly rather ephemeral, as an example of Namibian settler historiography of the 1950s. Certain manuscripts however remain very useful as historical overviews of places where little published material exists, in particular the historical overviews of the reserves Krantzplatz, Neuhof and Tses. -

The photos, showing portraits, group portraits, landscapes and buildings from southern and central Namibia, were taken in 1876. Most photos are of excellent quality and in good preservation condition. Many of the iconic images from this album have been repeatedly used in publications on 19th century Namibian history. Provenance The photographs were taken by F. Hodgson who accompanied the Cape Government’s Special Commissioner William Coates Palgrave on his mission to Namibia in 1876. Altogether three albums, with slightly differing contents, are known to exist (the other two are owned by the Parliament Library in Cape Town, and the National Library of South Africa (Cape Town). They were presented together with Palgrave's report to Parliament). This album had been in the possession of Mr. J.J. Christie, who was Palgrave's Secretary. It was bought from his son, H. Christie, Kimberley, in 1953 by the Historical Monuments Commission, and deposited at the National Archives. Between 1924-1949, it had temporarily been in the custody of Kimberley Public Library. -
