My research has unearthed that there are approximately 454 animal sanctuaries in the United States, of which 146 are dedicated to farm animals. However, of this 166 only 4 are dedicated to pigs, while 17 are specifically dedicated to the bovine. Furthermore, another 50, though not specifically dedicated to cows, do use the cow as the main symbol for their logo. Therefore the bovine is seemingly more represented and protected than any other farm animal in sanctuaries across the United States. The question is why the bovine, and how much has religion played a role in elevating this particular animal above all others. Furthermore, what constitutes a sanctuary? Does -

The Ur-Mahabharata
Approaches to the Ur-Mahabharata Zdenko Zlatar 1 The· problem of the Vr-Mahabharata There is a sloka in The Mahabharata which can be translated like this: 'Whatever is found here can be found elsewhere; what is not found here cannot be found anywhere else'. 1 This illustrates very well the variety of approaches to, and interpretations of, the epic for over a hundred and fifty years. Yet, when all of them are taken into account, it can be seen that they fall into a combination of one or two of four categories: 1) The Mahabharata as a unitary epic; 2) The Mahabharata as a composite epic; 3) The Mahabharata as a symbolic representation; 4) The Mahabharata as a real event. Of course, it is possible to combine (1) or (2) with (3) or (4), but it is not possible to hold (1) and (2) at the same time. Holding both (3) and (4) together is possible, but has not so far been put forward. In the nineteenth century Max Muller stated that all the gods of the Rig Veda were aspects of the sun. If, as Mary Carroll Smith argues, the key to The Mahabharata lies in the Rig Veda, then this proposition must be looked at. It was Adolf Holtzmann, Sr, who first intimated it, and his nephew, Adolf Holtzmann, Jr, who argued in 1895 that The Mahabharata contained various layers and reworkings, and that the present version is both an expanded and a re-worked epic (an 'analytic' approach). This thesis was rejected by Joseph Dahlmann who in the same year 1895 defended The Mahabharata as a unitary epic (a 'synthetic' approach). -

UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY Mother of Power, Mother of Kings: Reading Royal Ideology in the Devī Māhātmya by Raj Balkaran A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES CALGARY, ALBERTA SEPTEMBER, 2015 © Raj Balkaran 2015 Abstract The Sanskrit narrative text Devī Māhātmya, “The Greatness of The Goddess” (henceforth DM), extols the triumphs of an all-powerful Goddess, Durgā, over universe-imperiling demons. These exploits are embedded in an intriguing frame narrative: a deposed king solicits the counsel of a forest-dwelling ascetic, who narrates the tripartite acts of Durgā which comprise the main body of the text. Why is this? This study argues that the DM’s frame narrative cleverly engages a dichotomy at the heart of Hinduism: the opposing ideals of asceticism and kingship. These ideals comprise two strands of what is referred to herein as the brāhmaṇic double helix. This work decodes the symbolism of encounters between forest hermits and exiled kings through the lens of the dharmic double helix, demonstrating the extent to which this common narrative trope masterfully encodes the ambivalence of brāhmaṇic ideology. Engaging the tension between the moral necessity for nonviolence and the sociopolitical necessity for violence, this project deconstructs the ideological ambivalence throughout the DM to demonstrate that its frame narrative invariably sheds light on its core content. Its very structure serves to emphasize a theme that prevails throughout the text, one inalienable to the rubric of the episodes themselves: sovereignty on both cosmic and mundane scales. -

FROM MYTH TO EPIC The Ritual of Battle: Krishna in the Mahabhiirata. By Alf Hiltebeitel. Ithaca and London, Cornell University Press, 1976. Pp. 368. In the last decade or so there has occurred in the study of Hindu mythology what can only be described as a fluorescence. Not only has new light been cast on such traditional subjects for scholarly investiga- tion as and §iva; in addition, several new perspectives have been c;leveloped and successfully applied which have proved incisive for the whole body of Hindu mythology. Much of the impetus for the develop- ment of these perspectives is directly traceable to the ongoing work of Madeleine Biardeau, Georges Dumezil and Wendy Doniger O'Flaherty. The major thrust of each of these scholars has been to penetrate beneath the surface narrative of the myths they have studied in order to discover the constantly recurring motifs which underlie such myths, motifs which are the expressions of a coherent value system or ideology. Dumezil, working essentially from an Indo-European perspective, has been suc- cessful in showing the extent to which the first level of the mythology of the Mahiibhiirata-that dealing with the Pandavas and Kauravas-is underpinned and has been shaped by the tripartite ideology common to all branches of Indo-European mythology. Beginning from indigenous perspectives Biardeau and O'Flaherty have shown how Puranic cosmogony and the mythology of Siva respectively, can be understood in tenns of the tensions between two opposed sets of values, that of the renouncer (nivrtti) and the man in the world (pravrtti). Theirs is not the only approach that has been applied to Hindu mythology. -
