From the Table to the Stage Chris Berry- AEA, Florida A&M University As theatre artists we are striving to continually find the most effective way to tell the story we have chosen. We hold production meetings, company meetings, workshops and any other method that we feel is feasible to create a company of artists that can create the clearest and most dynamic product. During this process we often skip over the one thing that is the soul reason that a story can be dynamic and captivating... THE WORDS! This process called table work has grown to be something that is a formality to most companies that bides the time until "acting" can happen when people get on their feet. I feel that we then have done ourselves a disservice because we skipped a huge part of the theatre making process. The key to great acting, is great table work. I will facilitate a workshop that engages students and gives them an introductory example of how dynamic, dangerous, and effective table work can aid in the creative process.

A: They are some of the best examples of crossover artists moving constantly between stage and film. Phillip M Church, Associate Professor of Theatre at Florida International University will share with those who have an eye on acting and directing some of his insights into the complementary techniques of film and theatre. Drawing from stage and screen techniques both in front and behind the camera the actor-director will discover new avenues of expression through the reciprocity of both mediums. SFC- BUILDING 4, CLASSROOM, ROOM E-105 Creative Courage: Working Through Creative Blocks Camila Morrison, Louisiana State University

Often we find ourselves in a creative “block” and have trouble finding ways to move forward in our creative work. Sometimes our students have trouble even starting a project because they fear creative work. In this workshop, we will practice different ways of moving our students and ourselves forward in creative projects past the fear and blocks. These exercises can be used in a large classroom, in small groups, or on your own. Not only can the activities be used to identify the source of a “block,” which is often fear, but they can be used to create a discussion between teachers and students to figure out why a student might be having trouble with a project. I’ve found that if I give a project in my class that requires “creativity,” I will often have at least one student who expresses that they are not creative, or that this type of project scares them. One of these exercises usually helps them move forward with the project, leap past the fear of not being creative, and it proves to them that they are a creative individual. Sometimes it is a matter of making a mark on a blank page and remembering that even that shows that work has begun. A blank page can be scary because the possibilities are endless. Sometimes the fear and creative block comes from not having enough information, so we then talk about going back to research (with a set goal in mind) or brainstorming activities that can spark new ideas. Creating lists, then cutting the list in half and half again can help us focus a concept or ideas for design. Ultimately I think this workshop could benefit artists who find themselves stuck or procrastinating on projects or teachers that want to help students past these blocks and fear. If we have the right tools to be able to move forward in our creative work, then we would be able to create more art in a fast-paced environment. Students will be more prepared for the professional world, and established artists will be reminded and renewed to courageously continue their work. Individuals will leave with a downloadable workbook of the exercises, which will be projected and used in the workshop. Examples of completed activities or questions that will be posed to the group will also be projected for ease of communication.

SFC- BUILDING 4, BLACK BOX, ROOM E-129 Use Your Whole Self! Missy Barnes- Rollins College “Use your body!” - "Get out of your head!" are two of the most frequent directions offered to young actors. This workshop will focus on embodying choices that can be translated into physically expressed emotion and playable actions. Throughout the course of the workshop we will explore a variety of physical acting approaches, including exercises taken from the work of F.M. Alexander, Rudolph Laban, and Michael Chekhov. We will discuss what is meant by "making a choice" as an actor and delve into application of physicalized choices to text. Participants should arrive dressed to move and have a short piece of memorized text (3-4 lines) to explore.

SFC – BUILDING E, CHORAL LAB, ROOM E-134 There’s Truth in Singing Shelley Cooper, LaGrange College Will present a practical Masterclass on singing for Musical Theatre using the work of voice and speech specialist, Arthur Lessac called “There’s Truth in Singing”. Lessac voice and speech work integrates oral, physical, visual, and written tools in a clear, energized way and promotes a physical awareness of sound by appealing to the kinesthetic learner. The basis of the Masterclass is that in the world of Musical Theatre and Opera,

it is not acceptable to simply have a pretty voice; you must be able to portray the character you are singing and ground it in reality. If you have emotional intellect to your lyrics, know whom you are singing to, and why you are singing to this person/people, truth in singing can be done with ease. Through a series of physical, breathing, and vocal exercises, inspired greatly by the work of voice and speech specialist Arthur Lessac, we will unleash our true natural singing voices.
