EXTERMINATION OF THE JOYAS Gendercide in Spanish California Deborah A. Miranda (Ohlone-Costanoan Esselen Nation, Chumash) Attempting to address the many communities from which she spoke, Paula Gunn Allen once asserted: “I cannot do one identity. I’m simply not capable of it. And it took me years to understand that that’s one of the features of my upbring- ing. I was raised in a mixed cultural group — mixed linguistic, mixed religion, mixed race — Laguna itself is that way. So I get really uncomfortable in any kind of mono-cultural group.”1 Although Allen does not speak specifically of another community — her lesbian family — in this quotation, her legacy of activism and writing document the unspoken inclusion of sexual orientation within her list of identities. Like Allen, my own identity is not monocultural: by blood, I am Esselen and Chumash (California Native) as well as Jewish, French, and English. I was born at UCLA Medical Center, raised in trailer parks and rural landscapes, pos- sess a PhD, and teach at a small, private southern liberal arts university. I am fluent in English, can read Spanish, and was called to analiyah at the bat mitzvah of my partner’s niece. Who am I? Where is home? In my poetry and my scholarship, I have worked through issues of com- plex identities for much of my life, primarily those relating to my position as a mixed-blood woman with an Indian father and European American mother. But one of the most urgent questions in my life — the intersection of being Indian and being a lesbian — has always been more complicated, less easily articulated, than anything else. -

Castro ii Abstract “The Underside of Borders: Reading Chican@ and Native American Literature at the Turn of the Twenty-First Century” focuses on Chican@ and Native American novels published from 1990 to the present. Teasing out the common denominators of different methodologies grouped under the umbrella term “border theory,” my project expands the material and discursive range of the field, creating a critical platform that puts Native American and Chican@ concerns in conversation. Finding common ground between these two bodies of literature in overlapping histories of colonialism, violence, and oppression, this comparative project takes on the literary representation of borders both as geopolitical lines and metaphorical constructs. The analysis in it draws connections between the ideologies that shape the discourse around borders in the cultural imaginary and the pervasive violence that mires Indigenous and Chican@ histories in the US. In doing so, I reveal discursive spaces where issues relevant to Chican@ and American Indian Studies converge, overlap, and stand at odds. Using literary examples from Chican@ and Native American writers my project expands our understanding of how borders affect the way we read each other culturally and socially. -

¡EN VOZ ALTA! MEXICO'S RESPONSE TO U.S. IMPERIALISM, 1821-1848 By Rochelle L. Trotter A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Chicano/Latino Studies - Doctor of Philosophy 2014 ABSTRACT ¡EN VOZ ALTA! MEXICO'S RESPONSE TO U.S. IMPERIALISM, 1821-1848 By Rochelle L. Trotter This purpose of this dissertation is to explore and convey Mexico's response to the aggressive actions of both the Texas colonists and the U.S. government between 1821 and 1848. In order to accomplish this task, I engaged a variety of sources that included newspapers, foletins, governmental documents, travel journals, dime novels, letters, diaries, diplomatic correspondence, treaties, speeches, poetry, and books, all of which addressed the events leading up to the United States War against Mexico. However, the breadth and depth of material available in the published primary source record required that I focus my inquiry. Therefore, I emphasized three specific topics; Anglo immigration into Texas, the Texas colonist rebellion, and the efforts of the U.S. government to acquire the Texas territory beginning with the Louisiana Purchase and terminating with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Additionally, I expanded my time parameters and considered a contemporary response to the memories of that war, represented in the Mexican- produced telenovela Ramona (2000). In this manner, the story that appears in the following pages represents Mexico’s response, both then and now. This dissertation stands on a strong foundation of previous Mexican and Chicano scholarship. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo articulated its own mythological narrative that not only sought to maintain discord, but also solidify a subordinate role for both Mexico as a nation, and Mexicans as a people who chose to remain on their land. -

Journal of April 20, 2021 Cultural Analytics Against Conglomeration Dan Sinykin and Edwin Roland Dan Sinykin, Emory University Edwin Roland, University of California, Santa Barbara Peer-Reviewer: Kinohi Nishikawa Data Repository: 10.7910/DVN/EUPMKL A B S T R A C T In the 1980s, anxiety about the extensive and ongoing conglomeration of the publishing industry led to the emergence of a movement of nonprofit publishers. It included counterculture figures like Coffee House’s Allan Kornblum and Milkweed’s Emilie Buchwald, who got their start with boutique letterpresses; political and aesthetic activists like Arte Público’s Nicolás Kanellos, Feminist Press’s Florence Howe, and Dalkey Archive’s John O’Brien; and refugees from conglomeration like Fiona McCrae and André Schiffrin. Nonprofits often defined themselves by their support for literariness, and which they depicted as under threat from commercial houses, which helped them gain support from private foundations, philanthropists, and government agencies like the National Endowment for the Arts. We discovered that these two different ways of structuring publishers’ finances—conglomerate and nonprofit—created a split within literature, yielding two distinct modes of American writing after 1980. This essay characterizes the two modes, explains how the split between them happened, and illustrates the significance of this shift for the rise of multiculturalism. We pay particularly close attention to the careers of Percival Everett and Karen Tei Yamashita. 1: Port Townsend From Port Townsend, Washington, you can watch the Puget Sound meet the Salish Sea: the small water turns west toward the open ocean. A network of feminist bookstores, printers, and publishers brought poetry, fiction, political pamphlets, and anthologies to a women’s movement hungry for writings about their lives and experiences. What this early movement lacked in formal distribution, it made up for in spirit.
