Manga grow from combining of Ukiyo-e and from Western style drawing and it’s currently soon after World War II. Part from Manga's covers which is usually issued in black and white. But it is usual to find introductions to chapters to be in color and is read from top to bottom and then right to left, alike to the layout of a Japanese basic text. Anime relates to the animation style developed in Japan. It is characterized by particular characters and backgrounds which are hand drawn or computer generated that visually and confined set it apart from other forms of animation. Plots may include a variety of imaginary or ancient characters, events and settings. Anime is a complex art form that includes various themes, animation styles, messages, and aspects of Japanese culture. Each member will understand the differences in theme, style, animation, and cultural influences between Anime, Manga and American animation. As mass- produced art, anime has a stature and recognition even American animated films, long accepted as a respectable style of film making, have yet to achieve. -

Saxonhouse and Robert M. Stern ABSTRACT In this overview of the Symposium papers, we note that the bubble that occurred in Japan’s asset markets in the late 1980s came at a time when the conventional indicators of Japan’s economic performance were relatively stable. Following the collapse of the bubble, neither the Bank of Japan (BOJ) nor the Ministry of Finance (MOF) took timely and effective measures to deal with the recession that followed. While the evidence suggests that looser fiscal policy would have been ineffective, monetary policy measures might have worked. However, the BOJ followed a relatively tight monetary policy in 1991-93. In the face of the liquidity trap that ensued in the last of the 1990s, the conventional tools of stabilization policy appeared to be of limited use. To help the Japanese economy to recover from the “lost decade,” we thus discuss a number of unconventional and bold measures that the BOJ and MOF could pursue. It appears, however, that the political will is absent to undertake such measures. So long as this is the case, the effects of the lost decade will continue to act as a drag on the economy. -

It is a complex and elusive term that addresses varied practices and fandom-related activities. The targets of otaku fans’ interests can include manga, anime, games, the internet, computers, books, figurines, celebrities, special effects, and cosplay (costume play).1 While ‘otaku’ is roughly equivalent to the term ‘nerd’ in English and it usually refers to men, it can also be used for both sexes (although I won't be discussing female otaku here).2 The stereotype of the male otaku is that of an introvert, but otaku who frequent game arcades, on the other hand, are thought to be extroverts.3 While the otaku is typically regarded negatively because of his presumed antisocial attitudes,4 otaku fandom activities can also facilitate a collective social bond amongst members of a particular otaku subculture.5 Otaku culture is now regarded as a grassroots element of Japanese ‘soft power’, used in global strategies to promote Japan in the twenty-first century.6 Cultural ISSN 1837-8692 Cultural Studies Review 2014. © 2014 Yuji Sone. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Kwansei Gakuin University Repository 1 Kwansei Gakuin University Social Sciences Review Vol.19, 2014 Nishinomiya, Japan Roots of Cool Japan: From the Japanese Traditional Edo Culture to Anime and Manga Takuji OKUNO Japan’s transition from making things to making tales Japanese popular culture, known as “Cool Japan,” includes animations, comics, video games, figures, and J-pops that are highly acclaimed in Europe and the United States as well as throughout Asia. From the 1970s to the 1980s, Japan gained confidence in its ability to “make things” because consumers around the world embraced its manufactured products such as electric home appliances and automobiles with open arms in preference to the products of other advanced countries. However, at the beginning of the Heisei era, the bubble in the Japanese economy suddenly burst and Japan’s gross national product (GNP) plummeted, resulting in what is termed “the burst of economic bubble of 1990.” Relatively cheaper manufactured products from other Asian countries gained precedence over Japanese products. In response, many Japanese manufacturers moved their production plants to other Asian countries, particularly settling in mainland China, where labor costs were lower than in Japan. The recession was protracted and the Japanese people suffered from a sense low confidence in their abilities to overcome the recession. By the late 1990s, Prime Ministers Mori and, subsequently, Koizumi responded to Japanese political leader Heizo Takenaka’s advocacy of an information technology (IT) revolution in Japan as a way to beat the recession. -

GE Area: C-2 1 Course Description Manga is one of the most important art forms to emerge from Japan. Its importance as a medium of visual culture and storytelling cannot be denied. The aim of this course is to introduce students and to expose students to as much of the history and breadth of manga as possible. The breadth and scope of manga is limitless, as every imaginable genre exists. With over 10,000 manga being published every year (roughly one third of all published material in Japan), there is no way that one course can cover the complete history of manga, but we will cover as much as possible. Hughes (University of Warwick) Date of viva: April 11, 2011 ABSTRACT Germany and Japan as Regional Actors in the Post-Cold War Era: A Role Theoretical Comparison Recent non-comparative studies diverge in their assessments of the extent to which German and Japanese post-Cold War foreign policies are characterized by continuity or change. While the majority of analyses on Germany find overall continuity in policies and guiding principles, prominent works on Japan see the country undergoing drastic and fundamental change. Using an explicitly comparative framework for analysis based on a role theoretical approach, this study reevaluates the question of change and continuity in the two countries‘ regional foreign policies, focusing on the time period from 1990 to 2010. Through a qualitative content analysis of key foreign policy speeches, this dissertation traces and compares German and Japanese national role conceptions (NRCs) by identifying policymakers‘ perceived duties and responsibilities of their country in international politics. Furthermore, it investigates actual foreign policy behavior in two case studies about German and Japanese policies on missile defense and on textbook disputes. -

Box 260 DK-4000 Roskildess line 1 [email protected] ABSTRACT The present study looks at the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise and the role of digital games from the conceptual frameworks of transmedia storytelling and the Japanese media mix. We offer a historical account of the development of “the Mobile Suit Gundam” series from a producer´s perspective and show how a combination of convergent and divergent strategies contributed to the success of the series, with a special focus on games. Our case can show some insight into underdeveloped aspects of the theory of transmedial storytelling and the Japanese media mix. Keywords Transmedia Storytelling, Media mix, Intellectual Property, Business Strategy INTRODUCTION The idea of transmediality is now more relevant than ever in the context of media production. Strong recognizable IPs take for example more and more space in the movie box office, and even the Producers Guild of America ratified a new title “transmedia producer” in 2010 1. This trend is by no means unique to the movie industry, as we also detect similar patterns in other media like television, documentaries, comics, games, publishing, music, journalism or sports, in diverse national and transnational contexts (Freeman & Gambarato, 2018). However, transmedia strategies do not always manage to successfully engage their intended audiences; as the problematic reception of a number of works can demonstrate.
