Hosted by The Province of East Kent Freemasons In Aid of the Masonic Charitable Foundation 2025 Festival Sponsored By In the 1960s, the pianist, songwriter and arranger Les Reed was given a simple dictum by the music manag- er Gordon Mills: “Romantic songs for Engelbert Humperdinck, sexy ones for Tom Jones.” With the lyricist Barry Mason, Les wrote The Last Waltz (1967) and Winter World of Love (1969) for Humperdinck and I’m Coming Home (1966) and Delilah (1968) for Jones. Les Reed, who has died aged 83, also wrote the arrangement for another of Jones’s biggest hits, Green, Green Grass of Home (1967). “I got to know what Tom liked,” said Les. “He loved good lyrics and he liked melodies with a little blues touch and once you’ve got that, you’re home.” Les was involved in John Barry’s hit records Walk – Don’t Run and Hit and Miss, and he was the second pia- nist on Russ Conway’s Pepe (1961). The John Barry Seven recorded and toured with the pop star Adam Faith, who was best man at Les’s wedding to June Williams in 1960. Les was born in Westfield, on the outskirts of Woking, Surrey. His father, Ralph, arranged for him to have pi- ano lessons from an early age. Although Ralph was away fighting in the second world war as Les grew up, he would write home, giving encouragement and setting objectives. In 1962, Les left Barry and joined Piccadilly Records, a new subsidiary of Pye. He arranged hit records for Joe Brown and Emile Ford and almost had a hit himself in 1963 by rocking up Mozart in Minuet Mash by the Les Reed Combo. -

Dick James Music
WHO'S WHO AT DICK JAMES MUSIC DICK JAMES MUSIC came into being in 1961 when Dick James rented two rooms in Charing Cross Road, hired a secretary and started to build a catalogue. The first year was rather lean but in 1962 he made the acquaintance of a young man from Liverpool who was managing a group who called themselves The Beatles. The man's name was Brian Epstein. The Beatles also wrote their own material and so in February 1963, in partnership with Epstein, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Dick James, formed Northern Songs Ltd. The singles that followed included "Please Please Me", "From Me To You", "Do You Want To Know A Secret", "She Loves You" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand". Recordings and songs involved with Brian Epstein's artists other than The Beatles included Gerry And The Pacemakers' and Billy J;; Kramer And The Dakotas. Dick clocked up seven number one hits in seven months, a feat never achieved in the British Pop Business prior to that time. At last things were looking up and it was the start of the now successful DICK JAMES ORGANIZATION As with The Beatles, Dick James also had faith in another young artist who was to become a huge international superstar. This was Elton John and Dick signed him to a publishing, recording and management contract in 1967. As with The Beatles this paid handsome dividends because in the year 1971/1972 Elton John and the company received five gold albums each of which represented more than one million dollars worth of sales in the U.S.A. -

Sometimes, something happens to us, and the words “destiny” and “fate” seem to accurately describe the strange occurrence. For me, Live Aid—the cross-continental mega charity rock concert and one of the main subjects explored in my study—was one of those magic moments. I still vividly remember the day of the concert, July 13, 1985; it was an eye-opening revelation that ultimately led me to become a rock and roll enthusiast, and to say that the concert changed my life is still a vast understatement. I had heard the music of Duran Duran, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Madonna, and Bob Dylan, but I had never seen any of them perform. However, the concert was not just about the music but about saving people’s lives in Ethiopia, dying from hunger and famine.
