The making of the British Jazz Avant-Garde: 1968-1973 Introduction: Making British Jazz ... and Race In 1968 the Arts Council of Great Britain (ACGB), the quasi-governmental agency responsible for providing public support for the arts, formed its first ‘Jazz Sub-Committee’. Its main business was to allocate bursaries usually consisting of no more than a few hundred pounds to jazz composers and musicians. The principal stipulation was that awards be used to develop creative activity that might not otherwise attract commercial support. Bassist, composer and bandleader Graham Collier was the first recipient – he received £500 to support his work on what became the Workpoints composition. In the early years of the scheme, further beneficiaries included Ian Carr, Mike Gibbs, Tony Oxley, Keith Tippett, Mike Taylor, Evan Parker and Mike Westbrook – all prominent members of what was seen as a new, emergent and distinctively British avant-garde jazz scene. Our point of departure in this chapter is that what might otherwise be regarded as a bureaucratic footnote in the annals of the ACGB was actually a crucial moment in the history of British jazz.

Bio information: JOHN SURMAN Title: FLASHPOINT: NDR JAZZ WORKSHOP – APRIL '69 (Cuneiform Rune 315-316) Cuneiform publicity/promotion dept.: (301) 589-8894 / fax (301) 589-1819 email: joyce [-at-] cuneiformrecords.com [Press & world radio]; radio [-at-] cuneiformrecords.com [North American radio] www.cuneiformrecords.com FILE UNDER: JAZZ One of Europe’s foremost jazz musicians, John Surman is a masterful improvisor, composer, and multi-instrumentalist (baritone and soprano sax, bass clarinet, and synthesizers/electronics). For 45 years, he has been a major force, producing a prodigious and creative body of work that expands beyond jazz. Surman’s extensive discography as a leader and a side man numbers more than 100 recordings to date. Surman has worked with dozens of prominent artists worldwide, including John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood of Breath, Dave Holland, Miroslav Vitous, Jack DeJohnette, Terje Rypdal, Weather Report, Karin Krog, Bill Frisell, Paul Motian and many more. Surman is probably most popularly known for his longstanding association with the German label ECM, who began releasing Surman’s recordings in 1979. Surman has won numerous jazz polls and awards and a number of important commissions. Every period of his career is filled with highlights, which is why Cuneiform is exceedingly proud to release for the first time ever this amazing document of the late 60s 'Brit-jazz' scene. Born in Tavistock, in England, Surman discovered music as a child, singing as soprano soloist in a Plymouth-area choir. He later bought a second- hand clarinet, took lessons from a Royal Marine Band clarinetist, and began playing traditional Dixieland jazz at local jazz clubs.

Tom Sykes Music Directorate, University of Salford [email protected] Histories of British jazz are rare enough, and those dealing with post-1960 British jazz rarer still. Books such as Hilary Moore’s Inside British Jazz (2007) and George McKay’s Circular Breathing (2005) do include British jazz since 1960 but do not set out to be historical accounts as such. Ian Carr’s Music Outside (2008) is not really a history either, but it does give some historical background and provides a useful snapshot of contempo- rary jazz in Britain at the time of its first publication in 1973. Jim Godbolt’s A History of Jazz in Britain 1950–1970 (1989) partially covers post-1960 Brit- ish jazz, but for a comprehensive history of the period there is really only John Wickes’s Innovations in British Jazz: Volume One 1960–1980 (1999). Duncan Heining’s book is therefore a long-awaited addition to the litera- ture. He covers a similar historical period to Wickes but with a wider stylistic scope, and considers social and cultural contexts rather than focusing on musical innovations as Wickes does (although these are looked at in terms of the creation of a British jazz sound). Heining uses a range of scholarly and other sources, such as his own articles in various jazz magazines.

  • The Integration of Improvisation Into Through-Composed Music
Different Every Time: The Integration of Improvisation into Through-Composed Music. ANALYTICAL NOTES (volume 1) Paul Cutlan A portfolio of compositions submitted in Partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Master of Music (Composition) Conservatorium of Music University of Sydney 2012 ii STATEMENT OF ORIGINALITY: I declare that the research presented here is my own original work and has not been submitted to any other institution for the award of a degree. Signed:……………………………………………………………… Date:………………………………………………………………….. iii ABSTRACT: The aim of this research project has been to write a portfolio of compositions which integrate improvisation with through-composed contemporary classical techniques. The intended result is that the improvised elements aid the development and outcome of the musical argument and help contribute to the architectural structure of each piece in performance. The stylistic elements and structure of the compositions should embrace the aesthetics of improvisation in a way that promotes both coherence and flexibility. Although the written score is an important document of the composer’s intentions, equal importance is placed on the process of creative realisation. It is in performance that the benefits of improvisation can be evaluated in each piece. These will include elements of spontaneity, a heightened sense of engagement of both performers and audience, and unpredictable outcomes. Above all, the integration of improvisation into the compositions will lead to each performance being a unique experience. iv Acknowledgements: I would like to thank my supervisor Dr. Trevor Pearce at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for his guidance and patience, and for nourishing the sense of creative curiosity in me.

Nomination form International Memory of the World Register THE MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL, CLAUDE NOBS’ LEGACY (Switzerland) 2012-15 1.0 Summary (max 200 words) « It’s the most important testimonial to the history of music, covering jazz, blues and rock ». These are the words that Quincy Jones pronounced to present the preservation and restoration project of one of the musical monuments from the 20th century, the Montreux Jazz Festival Archives. From Aretha Franklin or Ray Charles to David Bowie or Prince, more than 5,000 hours of concerts have been recorded both in audio and video, since the creation of the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1967, by the visionary Claude Nobs. This collection contains many of the greatest names in middle and mainstream Jazz, including Errol Garner, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson to Herbie Hancock. Most of them composed great number of improvised jam sessions extremely rare. Miles Davis played his last performance, conducted by Quincy Jones in 1991. Many artists, like Marvin Gaye, recorded their first and only performance for television in Montreux. This collection of “live” music recordings, ranging from 1967-2012, with universal significance and intercultural dimensions has no direct equal in the world. This musical library traces a timeline of stylistic influences from the early styles of jazz to the present day. In 2007, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and the Montreux Jazz Festival have decided to join forces to create a unique and first of a kind, high resolution digital archive of the Festival. 2.0 Nominator 2.1 Name of nominator (person or organization) THIERRY AMSALLEM (MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL FOUNDATION) 2.2 Relationship to the nominated documentary heritage MEMBER OF THE MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL FOUNDATION BOARD & OWNER AND CURATOR OF THE MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL AUDIOVISUAL LIBRARY 2.3 Contact person(s) (to provide information on nomination) M.
