“We’re just testing the water at the moment to see what it’s like here, but we see there’s a lot of untapped potential at both venues,” he said.

Yass Rural Australians for Refugees recently held The Gift of Unity event to celebrate the resettlement of three Vietnamese families in Yass in 1980. Speakers Sue Demoor and Kate Walker movingly retold the stories of the community working together to give these people a new home and the lasting friendships forged with the Nuoi Ngo family. Guest speaker and journalist Paul Buongiorno gave the background to these events. Yass Parish priest Fa- ther Peter My, himself a refugee as were all mem- bers of the Vietnamese Choir who came from Canberra, vividly recounted the horrors of what it meant to be an escaping refugee.

Australian and US troops had withdrawn from Viet- nam in 1975. The Australian Prime minister, Mal- colm Fraser acknowledged Australia’s responsibility to assist Vietnamese refugees escaping a country left in the hands of the Communist North Viet- namese, ravaged by years of war. In response Archbishop Clancy of the Canberra Goulburn dio- cese called on parish communities to help. And the Yass community joined forces to make it happen. According to their website, their wines “…remain true to our brand and reflect the true varietal characters…”. The subject of this week’s “swirl” is a great example of these truisms – the Pankhurst Marsanne 2019.

This Marsanne is medium straw colour with bright flashes from within. A swirl reveals aromas of ripe yellow fleshed peaches with a side of grapefruit citrus and a hint of apricot kernel. The palate is full and plush and the peach and citrus flavours carry through, with lovely acidity and a hint of nutty minerality that adds to the complexity.

Originally hailing from the Rhone wine region of France, the Marsanne grape variety typically makes food friendly wines, and this example is as food friendly as they come. It would go well with any richly sauced chicken dish or the Sunday roast of chicken with all the trimmings. I bought mine from the Yass Valley Information Centre, but is also available for $25 from the Pankhurst Wines cellar door or on-line here: https://pankhurstwines.com.au

They also agreed to emphasise the importance of community access to the school’s playground, sporting areas, and the hall outside of school hours. This was suggested in the hope of ensuring the school would be a true community asset.

Another suggestion they made was to negotiate with Crown Lands to utilise the Old Murrumbateman School block, hoping to expand the playground and sporting areas for the school.
