International Journal of Religion & Human Relations, Volume 12 No. 1, 2020 Psychosocial Issues of Religious Fanaticism, Insecurity and National Development in Nigeria Ndidi Franca Madumere, C.U. Awusaku & B.O. Onu Abstract Nigeria’s national development striving since her independence in 1960 has been plagued by a plethora of social, religious, political and economic factors and the most challenging of which are religious fanaticism and insecurity. This paper therefore, takes a look at the Nigerian national development portrait since independence; the place of religion in national development; religious fanaticism in Nigeria; security situation in Nigeria since independence, religious fanaticism and insecurity in Nigeria. It also examined causes of religious fanaticism and insecurity in Nigeria; psychosocial issues of religious fanaticism, insecurity and national development. The paper concludes by blaming the current upsurge in the rate of insecurity in various parts of the country on the activities of religious fanatics who make themselves available in the hands of unscrupulous, over-ambitious and power-drunk politicians to achieve selfish political ends. It thus, recommends, among other things that the government should embark on massive industrialization in order to create employment opportunities for the teaming population of unemployed youths which constitute the major victims of religious fanaticism in Nigeria. 6 O Religious Terrorism errorism in the name of religion has become the predominant model for Tpolitical violence in the modern world. This is not to suggest that it is the only model because nationalism and ideology remain as potent catalysts for extremist behavior. However, religious extremism has become a central issue for the global community. In the modern era, religious terrorism has increased in its frequency, scale of violence, and global reach. At the same time, a relative decline has occurred in secular terrorism. The old ideologies of class conflict, anticolonial liberation, and secular nationalism have been challenged by a new and vigorous infusion of sec- tarian ideologies. Grassroots extremist support for religious violence has been most widespread among populations living in repressive societies that do not per- mit demands for reform or other expressions of dissent. What is religious terrorism? What are its fundamental attributes? Religious ter- rorism is a type of political violence motivated by an absolute belief that an other- worldly power has sanctioned—and commanded—terrorist violence for the greater glory of the faith. Acts committed in the name of the faith will be forgiven by the otherworldly power and perhaps rewarded in an afterlife. In essence, one’s religious faith legitimizes violence as long as such violence is an expression of the will of one’s deity. Professor Andrew Poe Tuesdays 2-4:30 in Clark 100 Office Hours: Wednesdays, 3-5PM in 202 Clark House Email: [email protected] Phone: 413.542.5459 Political Science 401 Fanaticism -Introduction- Many perceive a dangerous rise in radically utopian politics, often described as ‘fanaticism.’ Against the backdrop of increased ethnic and nationalist violence, authoritarianism, and declining safeguards for human rights, fanaticism is considered a fundamental impediment to well-functioning democratic politics. Yet, if such a concept is to have the theoretical force policy makers and theorists would like, more clarity is needed regarding what ‘fanaticism’ is and how it operates. This course examines the genealogy of fanaticism as a political concept. We will explore theoretical critiques of fanaticism, especially as the concept developed in relation to the history of liberal democracy. The first section of the course examines the emergence of fanaticism as a political – not merely as a religious – idea. Engaging Enlightenment debates on civil society, toleration, and public passions, this section of the course should highlight how fanaticism came to be reconceived in modern political thought. The second part of the course questions the conceptual costs of this redefinition. Here we will explore the traditionally perceived dangers of fanaticism to democratic politics. Who are political fanatics? What are the political (and psychological) consequences to ‘us’ in labeling others as ‘fanatics’? How might we distinguish between fundamentalism and fanaticism? Is fanaticism necessary to define the extant parameters of toleration or civil society? Is fanaticism always dangerous to democratic politics? We will conclude the course in the third section by engaging a variety of political texts aimed at motivating and legitimating actions that others have labeled as fanatical. -

Teaching Aims Man seeks and rejoices in meeting; meeting with himself, with his fellow man, with nature, with God himself. Meeting in peace. Meeting safely, in order to develop his talents creatively, to progress both personally and collectively, to enjoy beauty, nature, coexistence with others. To discover and develop collaboration and solidarity through his own efforts, in anticipation of a better, more creative and peaceful future. And yet, experience shows that this meeting is not an easy task. It often becomes poisoned and turns, instead, into conflict. Human history is full of violence, hostilities, aggressive behavior and bloody conflicts between individuals and peoples. Not only in the context of national, political and social confrontations, but also in the context of religion. All religions, including, unfortunately, even the Christian religion, have failed to escape the temptation of conflict, often contradicting the fundamental values they teach. Navarro*, Esperanza Marchena and Inmaculada Menacho Department of Psychology, University of Cadiz, Spain Abstract: Hatred is a deep and emotional extreme dislike. The objects of such hatred can vary extensively. Hatred is often associated with disposition towards hostility against the objects of hatred. And can drive oneself to extreme behaviors such as violence, murder, and war. In childhood and adolescence the attitudes of intolerance - impregnated with hatred – are formed, and these are extremely difficult to eradicate later. This paper goes through psychological perspective of hate and the different roles of cognition in hatred and violence. Then the duplex theory of hatred is presented considering some approaches to the origin of violent behaviors. Taking into consideration that complex problems do not respond to simple solutions, a potential alternative based on family and school education plays a major role. Learning conflict resolution based on negotiation and compromise seems essential, in addition to adopting intellectually and morally combative atti- tudes against violence. Box 68507, 21945 972, Rio de Janeiro RJ, Brazil; [email protected] Received: 14 March 2017; Accepted: 26 June 2017; Published: 3 August 2017 Abstract: I submit that epistemic progress in key areas of contemporary academic philosophy has been compromised by politically correct (“PC”) ideology. First, guided by an evolutionary account of ideology, results from social and cognitive psychology and formal philosophical methods, I expose evidence for political bias in contemporary Western academia and sketch a formalization for the contents of beliefs from the PC worldview taken to be of core importance, the theory of social oppression and the thesis of anthropological mental egalitarianism. Then, aided by discussions from contemporary epistemology on epistemic values, I model the problem of epistemic appraisal using the frameworks of multi-objective optimization theory and multi-criteria decision analysis and apply it to politically correct philosophy. I conclude that philosophy guided by politically correct values is bound to produce constructs that are less truth-conducive and that spurious values which are ideologically motivated should be abandoned. Objections to my framework stemming from contextual empiricism, the feminine voice in ethics and political philosophy are considered. I conclude by prescribing the epistemic value of empirical adequacy, the contextual value of political diversity and the moral virtue of moral courage to reverse unwarranted trends in academic philosophy due to PC ideology. I am honoured to speak to you this evening on the very important topic promoting respect for human rights and global ethics in the response to recent acts of terrorism especially to give my views on Religious Extremism and Fanaticism. From the very out set I wish to give my personal and on behalf of the Muslim Council of Britain's congratulations to your organisation Rights and Humanity for its fifteenth birthday and very valuable work it has done which has been very much recognised by international agencies. I have privileged to work closely on last year UN World Conference on Race and found Rights and Humanity work with faith communities very useful. Today 10th December date is also very special date in International calendar. Today is the 53rd anniversary of United Nations Declaration of Human Rights when in 1948 World community endorsed a remarkable document. Let me say a few words about Human Rights and Islam before I turn to the topic of religious extremism and fanaticism. I must make it clear that to the best of my knowledge, the modern world had no concept of human rights before the seventh century and it was until 18th century that the concept took any practical meaning in the constitutions of a number of countries. From Islamic point of view God granted rights to all humans, which cannot be taken away by any human institutions.
