Biographical/Historical note

The LBJ Distinguished Lecture Series was inaugurated in 1982 by President Robert Hardesty. In 1973, President Johnson brought his economic advisor Walter Heller to campus. It was the President's hope that Dr. Heller would be the first of many national leaders to visit Texas State and share their philosophies and experiences with the students. Less than a week later, President Johnson died before any formal plans could be made to follow up on his idea. The Lyndon Baines Johnson Distinguished Lecture Series fulfills the President's promise and honors the university's most distinguished alumnus.

Scope and Contents note

Series documents each lecture given and includes planning materials, pages and programs from a guest book with lecturers' signatures and messages, and commemorative medallions. Records of individual lectures may include transcripts, videorecordings, press releases, invitations, programs, and photographs.

Arrangement note

Materials in the Lyndon Baines Johnson Distinguished Lecture Series are arranged into three series: I. Planning, II. Realia, and III. Lectures. Series I contains planning documents, including President Hardesty's announcement of beginning the lecture series and a fundraiser to benefit the endowed lecture series. Series II contains realia consisting of a guest book signed by the distinguished lecturers and examples of bronze medallions given to the lecturers. Series III is arranged chronologically by date of the lecture and includes materials related to the planning and delivery of each LBJ distinguished lecture.
