LRS Celebration Evening Thursday 9th February 2017 Leicester Arena #LRSCelebration In partnership with #LRSCelebration Welcome to the 2017 Celebration Evening It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the inaugural Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport (LRS) Celebration Evening in partnership with De Montfort University, here at the fantastic Leicester Arena. This evening will help us all acknowledge the significant impact that sport and physical activity has made to improve people’s lives. We will recognise and celebrate the hard work and achievements of schools, clubs, community organisations, volunteers and our key partners that are working tirelessly across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland. I would like to especially thank De Montfort University for their support of this highly worthwhile event and we look forward to working with them more closely in the future. Finally, and most importantly, we hope you enjoy your evening and that you will all individually continue the excellent work you do to develop sport and physical activity in Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland. DMU has also won £20,000 from the FA to become a football ‘super hub’, building strong sporting links and creating footballing opportunities throughout the local community. Our DMU Sport provision works the same way. Together with training our sports teams to reach the highest level of achievement, we are working to help provide sporting chances throughout the community. Page 4 LRS Celebration Evening: 9th February 2017 Ambition 1 Awards The LRS Primary PE & Sport Premium Award This Award recognises the primary school that has achieved the greatest impact through its use of primary sports premium funding. The effects of sport and physical activity on young people can go much further than being good at a sport. We look at impact on the wider school, on individual students and staff, and on the local community. Shortlisted Nominees Millfield L.E.A.D. Academy Swallowdale Primary School The John Buckingham Award for Developing School Sports Associations The John Buckingham Award is presented to the ‘Developing School Sports Association’ of the year, who may have grown, developed, changed or modernised their offer, to ensure more young people can access opportunities in school sport and competition. The Hilary Johnson Award for Service to PE & School Sport The Hilary Johnson Award is a Lifetime Achievement Award for long service to PE and School Sport. It is named in memory of Martin Johnson CBE’s mother, who was an incredibly dedicated and passionate PE teacher in Leicestershire. It is awarded each year to an individual who has consistently gone above and beyond to make PE and school sport accessible for all children and young people across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland. We do this by securing resources to develop new ways of attracting people into physical activity and sport such as campaign weeks, the Workplace Challenge initiative and by funding and promoting Back to Sport Programmes. 2016 HIGHLIGHTS invested by Leicestershire County Council Public Health Team into county 866new sign-ups to the £923,576 Locality Sport Workplace Challenge. Page 6 LRS Celebration Evening: 9th February 2017 Ambition 2 Awards The Workplace Health Award The Workplace Health Award aims to recognise workplaces who have fully engaged with Workplace Challenge by encouraging staff to take part in national activity log challenges and the LRS competition programme. It is awarded to workplaces who truly value the health and wellbeing of their employees. Early Years Physical Activity Awards Most Active Setting Award This award is for an Early Years setting demonstrating that they are committed to promoting the health and wellbeing of its children through excellent implementation of Purposeful Physical Play (PPP) in an effort to get their children moving. Shortlisted Nominees Ashmount School EYFS Daisy Chain Children’s Nursery Holmsdale Manor Nursery School Early Years Champion Award This award is for an individual who has shown a passion for getting their Early Years setting more active by attending Purposeful Physical Play (PPP) training and transferring this positively into their workplace. Shortlisted Nominees Katherine Mackness – Apple Tree Nursery Kayleigh Nichols – Orchard End Nursery Parental/Carer Engagement Award This award is for an Early Years setting who have shown exceptional attempts to engage with parents/carers and ensure that children stay active beyond the early years setting and into their home life. Shortlisted Nominees Fairfield Preparatory School Whetstone Baptist Playgroup Twilight Games Award The Twilight Games was an initiative linked to the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games. 7 care homes took part in the competitive week of adapted activities during August 2016. Each care home represented a country with flags and bunting and all embraced the ethos of the events. This award is presented to the Care Home that demonstrated true ‘Spirit of the Games’. Page 7 #LRSCelebration AMBITION 3: PLACES TO PLAY To work with partners to support and shape the future provision of a balanced and high quality stock of sports and physical activity facilities and open spaces, in order to develop active and healthy communities.
