THRUSH AIRCRAFT, INC. P.O. Box 3149 Albany, GA 31706-3149 Phone (229) 883-1440 Fax (229) 439-9790 CUSTOM KIT CUSTOM KIT No. CK-AG-40 Rev. A Date: 12/8/06 WING SPAR UPGRADE The wing spars of most early Thrush models are the subject of FAA Airworthiness Directives (most recently FAA AD 2006-07-15) which require periodic inspection of the lower wing spar caps at the splice block attach holes for fatigue cracks. This Custom Kit is an acceptable way to replace the lower spar caps, but it does more than this for the aircraft owner. It brings the spars up to the best fatigue capability that is compatible with the existing wings. This upgrade includes not only the lower spar caps that have the first two splice holes cold expanded, but it also includes new inboard webs and doublers as well as the “big butterfly” and lower splice plate. When a set of wings is rebuilt according to this Custom Kit, it will gain the initial inspection interval of a “Group 4” airplane while retaining the spar fatigue life of its current group. The inspection intervals between initial inspection and spar fatigue life limit will be the larger inspection intervals currently used for Group 4 and 5 airplanes. The upgraded wing will be as strong as or, in many cases, stronger than the original. Note that this upgrade is for both wings. If the airplane has one relatively young spar cap and it is not replaced, the inspection intervals will be based on that spar, not the new one.

  • Air-Cooled Cylinders 1
Air-Cooled Aircraft Engine Cylinders An Evolutionary Odyssey by George Genevro Part 1 - From the Past Should aircraft engines be liquid-cooled or air-cooled? This “difference of opinion” is about a hundred years old and without a doubt the argument will continue as long as piston engines power the airplanes we fly. The manner in which the question is stated is misleading, however, since all waste heat that comes through the structure of an engine is eventually delivered to the air. In “liquid-cooled” engines the coolant can be water, ethylene glycol, a mixture of the two, or one of the many other liquids that have been tried and found wanting. Its primary purpose is to carry heat from the cylinder barrel and head to the radiator through which air, the actual cooling medium, flows. Proponents of liquid-cooling–now as in the past–can point to some benefits and operational advantages such as lessened hazard of shock cooling an engine, being able to direct dedicated coolant flow to critical areas in the cylinder head such as the exhaust valve seat and guide area, flexibility in radiator placement, greater structural rigidity in the engine, and having the option of designing airframes with a relatively small cross-sectional area that could still house a powerful engine. With every advantage, imagined or real, there is almost always a price to pay. Those who opted for liquid-cooled engines had to accept added weight, greater possibility of battle damage in military applications, and greater system complexity as the penalties. Such is life.

  • JET: Jet, a Form of Lignite Coal, Is Classified As a Mineraloid
JET: Jet, a form of lignite coal, is classified as a mineraloid. It is jet-black in color, very light in weight, takes a fine polish, and is easily worked into beads and ornamental objects. JET HISTORY, NAME, LOCALITIES: Jet has served as a gemstone since prehistory. Its name comes from jaiet, the French word for the same material. Collecting localities are found in Austria, Poland, England, Canada, Spain, Russia, and the United States (Maryland, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico). MINERALOGY, PROPERTIES, OCCURRENCE: Jet, pronounced as it is spelled, is classified as mineraloid and has neither a definite chemical composition nor a crystal structure. It has a Mohs hardness of 2.0-2.5, no cleavage, a conchoidal fracture, and a very low specific gravity of 1.1-1.3. It is jet-black in color with occasional dark-brown streaks and has a vitreous luster on freshly broken surfaces. Jet has an organic origin, consists primarily of carbon, and is a form of lignite coal that originated as ancient trees that grew in fresh-water swamps, then floated down rivers to sink in seas and become buried and compacted in a salt-water environment. It occurs as lenses in a hard shale known as “jet-rock.” METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES, LORE, USES: Jet jewelry was popular during the Roman period when it was thought to deflect the gaze of the “evil eye.” It again gained great popularity as gemstone in mourning jewelry during the Victorian Era. Easily carved and polished, jet is used to fashion rosary beads and ornamental objects. Metaphysical practitioners believe that jet removes negative thoughts and energies, protects against illness and violence, produces calmness and serenity, and reduces feelings of depression.
