ABOUT TILTED SCALES COLLECTIVE Tilted Scales Collective is a small collective of dedi- cated legal support organizers who have spent years support- ing and fighting for political prisoners, prisoners of war, and politicized prisoners in the occupied lands of Turtle Island (i.e., the so-called United States). The collective formed out of conversations at an Anarchist Black Cross conference about the need to stop allowing the state to use criminal charges to dismantle, destroy, and neutralize radical movements. From those conversations was borne the idea for this guide for de- fendants. A companion guide for lawyers who are represent- ing the kind of defendants we are talking about in this guide is forthcoming. As a collective, we seek to help radicals and revolutionaries figure out how to protect themselves and their comrades when faced with state repression, while strengthen- ing their movements and advancing the fight for liberation. INTRODUCTION If this book found its way into your hands, chances are you are in dire need of it right now. Maybe the person who acted like your best friend was working for the cops the whole time. Or those FBI agents who have been harassing you for months put you in handcuffs this time, and now you are facing terrorism charges. Or you woke up a couple of days ago with an assault weapon pointed at your head and some Darth Vader dude shouting at you not to move. Or you went to a demonstration and suddenly the district attorney wants to make a felon out of you. However it happened, rest assured that you are not the first one to be targeted by the state—and that help is here. Others have been in your situation before, and this guide is based on their experiences. While writing this book, we received feedback and insights from dozens of prisoners, for- mer prisoners, legal workers, and lawyers to make sure we were able to provide you with the best advice possible. Who is “we”? The Tilted Scales Collective is a loose group of an- archist legal workers who decided to write this guide based 10 . Tilted Scales Collective on years of supporting anarchists (or people targeted for al- legedly being anarchists) and others as they have dealt with serious criminal charges. We are not lawyers and nothing in this guide should be construed as legal advice. We wrote this guide for people who are seriously en- tangled in the criminal legal system, whether they are fac- ing federal felony accusations, conspiracy charges, terrorist enhancements, or potential years or decades in prison. Of necessity, we could not focus in-depth on state-level charges because they vary quite a bit from state to state. However, the basics of handling your case will largely be the same, regardless of which criminal legal system you find yourself confronting. We also did not write this guide to be spe- cific to everyone scooped up in mass arrests at protests or spontaneous rebellions, although we hope it will be useful in those situations, particularly for those facing serious fel- ony charges.

    DISAGGREGATING THE SCARE FROM THE GREENS Lee Hall*† INTRODUCTION When the Vermont Law Review graciously asked me to contribute to this Symposium focusing on the tension between national security and fundamental values, specifically for a segment on ecological and animal- related activism as “the threat of unpopular ideas,” it seemed apt to ask a basic question about the title: Why should we come to think of reverence for life or serious concern for the Earth that sustains us as “unpopular ideas”? What we really appear to be saying is that the methods used, condoned, or promoted by certain people are unpopular. So before we proceed further, intimidation should be disaggregated from respect for the environment and its living inhabitants. Two recent and high-profile law-enforcement initiatives have viewed environmental and animal-advocacy groups as threats in the United States. These initiatives are the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) prosecution and Operation Backfire. The former prosecution targeted SHAC—a campaign to close one animal-testing firm—and referred also to the underground Animal Liberation Front (ALF).1 The latter prosecution *. Attached to the email was an Excel spreadsheet titled “2011 Recruitment Plan.” The man opened the spreadsheet. The email was not from a coworker, it was a carefully crafted attack known as ”spearfi shing” in which a fraudulent email is sent to a specifi c person. he spearfi shing email contained an system, SecurID. SecurID is used by an Excel spreadsheet with a zero- estimated 250 million people worldwide. Because the main role of the SG is supporting the prisoners, the newsletter can often come over a little negative, dealing as it does with issues like arrests, court cases, prison conditions etc. But we should bear in mind that prison support is not just important for those particular prisoners, it is vital to the success of the whole animal liberation movement. To paraphrase several earlier writers involved in social struggles, any movement that does not support its political internees is a movement destined to fail. At the recent AR2009 International Animal Rights Gathering in Oslo, one of the three days was devoted to the theme of repression of the movement, and how to overcome it. We heard about how repression, which used to be mostly restricted to the UK and USA, was now spreading to other countries, such as Holland and Austria, and we heard of disturbing links between our government and theirs on the subject of how to tackle animal rights “extremists”.

    9/11/2014 escape.htm Joe Matheny, a founding father Culture Jammer, was kind enough to give what he called his "last interview" online to Escape. Now happily working towards his pension in an anonymous programmer's job, Joe famously spammed the White House with a bunch of email frogs and caused uproar in American media society with his many japes. But why did it get all serious? And why are none of the original CJers talking to each other? What follows is the unedited version of the interview published in December 1997's Escape. All the hotlinks are Joe's. So who started Culture Jamming as a phenomenon, and why? Boy, that's a loaded question! No, really. It depends on who you ask. Personally I trace the roots of media pranking, or "culture jamming" as it's known these days, to people like Orson Welles and his famous "War of the Worlds" broadcast in America, or even his lesser known film "F is for Fake". More recently, a scientist by the name of Harold Garfinkle conducted something called breaching experiments, in which he studied the flexbility of peoples belief systems by fabricating stories and then guaging peoples reaction to them.He called this field of study Ethnomethodology and popularized it in his book Studies in Ethnomethodology. Garfinkle would incrementally make the his stories wilder and more speculative until the subjects would finally reach a point of disbelief. (in other words Garfinkle perpetrated lies, and then "pushed the envelope" with his subjects) In the 60s CJ was taken to a whole new level by two very differnet groups.

    GENTLE GIANTS, BARBARIC BEASTS AND WHALE WARRIORS: Contentious Traditions, Eco-Political Discourse and Identity Politics Rob van Ginkel Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Amsterdam [email protected] Abstract Traditions are usually enmeshed in cultural politics, especially if they are highly controversial and heavily contested. In this article, I will firstly go into the tradition of the Faroe Islands’ grindadráp, a bloody pilot whale drive, which in Faroese eyes constitutes an inalienable part of their culture. It is strongly opposed by environmentalists and a wider audience. Secondly, I will examine the attempts of Makah Indians to revitalize their tradition of whale hunting in an effort to reinforce their identity. In this case, too, there was massive opposition, but the tribe nonetheless obtained permission to go whaling again. The eco-political discourse on Faroese and Makah whale hunting harbors a strong component of evaluating the merits and demerits of Faroese and Makah culture and the genuineness and legitimateness of the whaling traditions. The present article describes and analyses the debate, in particular as it relates to the issues of heritage and its contested authenticity. It argues that authenticity is not an ontological category but can only be produced in practice. Introduction In the commonsensical perception, ‘tradition’ often rings a bell of repetitive continuity. The term derives from the Latin traditio: to hand over. It is commonly thought of as an inherited pattern of thought or action, a specific practice of long standing, that which is transmitted from generation to generation. Departing from a similar conception, the pioneers of folklore and anthropology often conflated tradition and culture.
