MUSIC AT NJIT A PERCUSSION DISCUSSION — IT’S MORE THAN B E A T I N G A DRUM EDWARD SHEA AND MARY BABIARZ FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6 11:30 A.M. - 1 P.M. CAMPUS CENTER ATRIUM Edward Shea, a star of percussion for more than 40 years, will again share his talent and knowledge at NJIT in a lecture and recital highlighting his virtuosity with snare drum, timpani and mallet percussion. Shea is a 1972 graduate of the Philadelphia Music Academy in percussion and music education. His stellar career includes playing for hit Broadway productions. His last two Broadway shows were the Disney musical Newsies and Holiday Inn at Studio 54. He is currently subbing on Aladdin , Cats and A Bronx Tale . Shea’s career also spans playing for national and international tours of shows that include Chicago , A Chorus Line and The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber , and for performers who include Paul Anka and Debbie Reynolds. He has performed for numerous TV specials; recorded with the Four Tops, Temptations, Lou Rawls, Loretta Lynn, Eubie Blake and many other artists; and backed Frank Sinatra and Johnny Mathis as well as other stars in live performances. Mary Babiarz, equally adept with violin, viola and piano, will accompany Shea on vio - lin. A member of the Paper Mill Playhouse Orchestra, Babiarz also performs with groups that include the Johnny Mathis Orchestra, the New Jersey State Opera Orchestra and the Choral Art Society of New Jersey. In addition to giving private les - sons, she is a music teacher for Stepping Stones — a preschool in Livingston for chil - dren with Down syndrome and received the 2007 Volunteer of the Year Award given by the Arc of New Jersey, which advocates for citizens with developmental disabilities and their families. A Bronx Tale Synopsis A Bronx Tale, a new musical set in the early 1960s, is based on the autobiographical play written by Chazz Palminteri. It tells the coming-of-age story of Calogero Anello, a young boy from a working class family who finds himself caught between his loving father and a charismatic mob boss. In Act One, Calogero witnesses Sonny, the mob boss, murdering someone right in front of his house on Belmont Avenue; Calogero covers for Sonny when questioned by the NYPD. Calogero’s father, Lorenzo, who is an MTA bus driver, wants to instill a strong sense of right and wrong in his son, but Calogero goes against his father’s wishes. After Sonny is released by the police with no charges against him, he takes Calogero under his wing and helps him get involved with the “glamorous” world of organized crime. Sometime later, Calogero is all grown up and a full prodigy of Sonny, but his father has no idea he has continued to see Sonny. Calogero has also developed a group of Italian- American friends that Sonny thinks is a bad influence over him and encourages Calogero to stick to his schoolwork. Calogero meets an African-American girl, Jane, on Webster Avenue which is a very different side of the Bronx than where Calogero lives. He asks his father for advice on what he should do when he and Jane go on a date. Calogero’s father doesn’t exactly approve of him going out with Jane because he is concerned for his son’s safety, considering the high racial tensions on the time period, but Lorenzo still gives him advice.

Mathew and Tess will hold workshops on Thursday, November 3 and Friday, November 4 for all students auditoning. This is sure to be an amazing experience for each of students to gain knowledge and input from these two Broadway veterans. The following are bios for them both: Mathew James Thomas is a Britsh actor and singer who has made appearances Matthew James Thomas in television, flm, and theatre. He is known for his television roles including the BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning, The Lost Prince, and the ITV drama-musical show, Britannia High. Thomas is also recognized for his performance in the ttle role of the 2013 Broadway revival of Pippin, which received a Tony Award for Best Revival Musical. He was also a late additon to the U.S. natonal tour of Pippin in 2014. He had his Broadway debut in 2010 playing Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Turn of the Dark. Thomas trained at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London and later at the Italia Cont Academy of Theatre Arts also in London. His frst professional actng job came at the age of 8 when he played Kipper in a producton of Oliver.

For the purposes of this document, I will make use of the established term low male voice (LMV) while acknowledging that there is a push for the removal of gender from voice classification in the industry out of respect for our trans, non-binary and gender fluid populations. In addition to analysis and summation of musical concepts and content found within each selection, each repertoire selection will include discussions of style, vocal technique, vocalism, and character in an effort to establish routes towards authenticity in the field of musical theatre over the last twenty five years. The explosion of online streaming and online sheet music resources over the last decade enable analysis involving original cast recordings, specific noteworthy performances, and discussions on transposition as it relates to the honoring of character and capability of an individual singer. My experiences with challenges as a young low voice (waiting for upper notes to develop, struggling with resonance strategies above a D♭4) with significant musicianship prowess left me searching for a musically challenging outlet outside of the Bel Canto aesthetic.

Kennedy Center, the Sheen Center, and was featured in a documentary CD recording of Spanish and Latin American piano music.
