MUSIC AT NJIT A PERCUSSION DISCUSSION — IT’S MORE THAN B E A T I N G A DRUM EDWARD SHEA AND MARY BABIARZ FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6 11:30 A.M. - 1 P.M. CAMPUS CENTER ATRIUM Edward Shea, a star of percussion for more than 40 years, will again share his talent and knowledge at NJIT in a lecture and recital highlighting his virtuosity with snare drum, timpani and mallet percussion. Shea is a 1972 graduate of the Philadelphia Music Academy in percussion and music education. His stellar career includes playing for hit Broadway productions. His last two Broadway shows were the Disney musical Newsies and Holiday Inn at Studio 54. He is currently subbing on Aladdin , Cats and A Bronx Tale . Shea’s career also spans playing for national and international tours of shows that include Chicago , A Chorus Line and The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber , and for performers who include Paul Anka and Debbie Reynolds. He has performed for numerous TV specials; recorded with the Four Tops, Temptations, Lou Rawls, Loretta Lynn, Eubie Blake and many other artists; and backed Frank Sinatra and Johnny Mathis as well as other stars in live performances. Mary Babiarz, equally adept with violin, viola and piano, will accompany Shea on vio - lin. A member of the Paper Mill Playhouse Orchestra, Babiarz also performs with groups that include the Johnny Mathis Orchestra, the New Jersey State Opera Orchestra and the Choral Art Society of New Jersey. In addition to giving private les - sons, she is a music teacher for Stepping Stones — a preschool in Livingston for chil - dren with Down syndrome and received the 2007 Volunteer of the Year Award given by the Arc of New Jersey, which advocates for citizens with developmental disabilities and their families. NJIT welcomes attendees from all area colleges and universities.
