N icolás V aldés El Colegio de Michoacán Universidad de Persignan Antonio Villalobos, del Departamento de Economía del Estado de Jalisco, supo en Colotlán, Jal., de la exis­ tencia de un documento sobre la historia antigua de ese lugar, cuyo dueño, Julián Sánchez Ortega, colotlense ra­ dicado en Guadalajara, quien guarda su tesoro en un ban­ co, generosamente accedió a proporcionar copias fotostáti­ cas, cuya paleografía, nada fácil por la escritura desteñida y en partes casi totalmente perdida, emprendieron varias personas de buena voluntad. El documento, presentado como suyo por José Anto­ nio García, está escrito a mano, letra por letra, como de imprenta, en una sola hoja de papel especial que mide ciento dos por ochenta centímetros. El autor, de quien no se tienen noticias precisas, parece identificable como An­ tonio García Rivera, pintor de Colotlán (1814-1902), in­ humado “gratuitamente en fosa común en el panteón de Guadalupe de este lugar, en virtud de haber sido proba­ da la insolvencia del interesado”.1 El autor, que, por lo visto, dedicó al texto consignado en esta hoja la misma atención y paciencia que a un cuadro, había ensayado su redacción en forma un tanto distinta, a juzgar por varias citas hechas por el investigador totatichense Alfredo Váz­ quez del Mercado (t 1974). Nueva Galicia’s Indigenous People Established in 1548, the Spanish province of Nueva Galicia embraced 180,000 kilometers and included most of present-day Jalisco, Nayarit, Aguascalientes and Zacatecas. Across this broad range of territory, a wide array of indigenous groups lived during the Sixteenth Century. Domingo Lázaro de Arregui, in his Descripción de la Nueva Galicia - published in 1621 - wrote Map Source: Para Todo México. that 72 languages were spoken in the Spanish colonial province of Nueva Galicia. “Chichimecas” was the collective name for a wide range of indigenous groups living throughout Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Durango, and most of Jalisco and Guanajuato. The Indians of Jalisco At the time of the Spanish contact, the most important indigenous tribes of what is now known as Jalisco were: Cocas – Central Jalisco (near Guadalajara and Lake Chapala) Guachichiles – Northeastern Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Guanajuato Huicholes – Northwestern Jalisco and Nayarit Tecuexes – Northern Jalisco (north of Guadalajara) Caxcanes – Northern Jalisco (Los Altos), Southwestern Zacatecas and Western Aguascalientes Tepehuanes – Northern Jalisco and large parts of Durango Purépecha (Tarascans) – Southern Jalisco and large sections of Michoacán Early on, disease, war and assimilation reduced their numbers.
