This work was funded by the University of Tennessee Science Alliance Center of Excellence Distinguished Scientist Stipend, by the Geological Society of America research grant 5664-95, and by the Swingle Fellowship offered by the Department of Geological Sciences of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. iii ABSTRACT Detailed mapping in the easternmost western Blue Ridge of central-western North Carolina revealed that the premetamorphic Greenbrier fault separates the Snowbird Group from Great Smoky Group, and the Hayesville fault separates eastern Blue Ridge assemblages from the Ocoee Supergroup units and western Blue Ridge basement. The faulted nature of the Snowbird-Great Smoky Groups contact suggests that the Great Smoky Group may have been transported northwestward farther than previously thought along the Greenbrier fault, and permitted the reinterpretation of changes in Snowbird Group stratigraphy within the fo otwall of Greenbrier fault previously associated with lateral facies changes later telescoped by Paleozoic thrusts. Those changes can be explained now as the result of active normal faulting during the time of accumulation of the Snowbird Group. Compositional changes in the Snowbird Group suggest that Snowbird Group strata pinchout to the SE represents a distal downlap with a northwestern clastic provenance, and with an original depositional dip to the southeast. Thus, the granitic rocks beneath the Ocoee Supergroup in the eastern edge of the Western Blue Ridge did not contribute significantly to the sedimentary budget of the Late Proterozoic rifted margin of Laurentia. The concept of a sediment trap and a sediment-starved basin can be derived from asymmetrical rifting models that predict the sequential abandonment of cratonward rift basins as the upper mantle is elevated, and normal faults have to sequentially migrate basinward. The deformation history after the end of the Late Proterozoic rifting includes three periods of deformation. The oldest period of deformation is early Taconic (Penobscottian?), recorded by the premetamorphic emplacement of the Greenbrier and Hayesville thrust sheets; the Greenbrier fault transported Great Smoky Group rocks northwestward over Snowbird Group and basement rocks; the Hayesville fault carried eastern Blue Ridge assemblages over iv the Greenbrier thrust sheet, and produced mylonite zones within the Middle Proterozoic basement orthogneiss. The tectonostratigraphic package was metamorphosed to sillimanite grade during the Taconic orogeny. Newfound Gap Road (US 441), which travels north from Cherokee, North Carolina, to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, forms the backbone of the park and climbs to over 5,000 feet at Newfound Gap. If national parks have specialties, the Smokies is known as a hiker’s park. The scenery is diverse: mountain views, old-growth trees, waterfalls, streams, and more shades of green than a paint chart. Mile for mile, you’ll Segment 1 | 2 find hiking in the park easier than in the neighboring national forests. Even though there are no blazes on Smokies trails, they are so well marked at every intersection that you can follow them with confidence. (Still, stop at a Visitor Center and pick up a Great Smoky Mountains Trail Map for $1.00.) The Smokies may be the most visited national park in the country but only the roads and parking lots are congested. With over 800 miles of trails, even popular trails are not very busy. The trails in the Smokies are well maintained and well marked. Hikers will appreciate that they’re in a na- tional park. Pat McCrory’s launch of the $2 billion Connect NC bond campaign included a stop at Stone Moun- tain State Park Oct. 22, where he signed a ceremonial copy of the 2015 legislation and touted the proposal’s benefits to the state parks system. If approved by voters in March, the Connect NC bonds would direct $75 million to 45 projects in state parks, recreation areas and natural areas across North Carolina. The identified projects include: $20.8 million for new or improved visitor centers and community buildings in 11 parks; $18.8 million for new or expanded campgrounds and cabins in 12 parks; $21.3 million for other visitor facilities in 12 parks; and, $14.1 million for land acquisition at 10 park units. “Today, we are enjoying and benefiting from the invest- ments made by our parents and grandparents,” McCrory said. “New university and community college facilities and improved state parks are long-term investments that will support our growth and make North Carolina more attractive to businesses and residents.” The Governor spoke to a crowd of more than 100 support- ers along a trail below the granite face of Stone Mountain. He introduced Robert Orr, former associate justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, who heads a bipartisan committee to advocate for passage of the bond referendum.
