Like many villages in Wales the young men of Llanwrtyd Wells and surrounding areas left their homes to join the soldiers deployed to fight the First World War and many subsequently lost their lives. To commemorate the centenary of the ending of this tragic conflict, Llanwrtyd and District Heritage and Arts Centre have a special exhibition that opened at the end of March and will run throughout the season. With photographs depicting the horrors of the war, quotes from those who were there, detailed information about the conflict together with tributes to local soldiers, the display also features a waterfall of poppies handmade by residents and friends of the town. Situated in a small, separate room this atmospheric display provides the opportunity for visitors to learn about the Great War, and spend time in quiet reflection and remember, not only those who gave their lives, but also those who survived but spent their remaining years reliving the horrors they had endured. The Heritage and Arts Centre is open 10am – 4pm Thursday to Sunday (and Bank Holidays) until the end of October. Admission is free. www.history-arts-wales.org.uk

11/18(12)

On Saturday June 30 there’ll be a working party at Llandovery’s brand new community orchard, Berllan Tywi! It is only a few months old but already all of the twenty native fruit trees are in blossom this May! We’ll work from 10am til 1pm clearing some of the land and making a fire pit. Then we’ll have a shared lunch on site if it’s fine or if it’s raining we’ll go to the station cafe. Please bring forks, rakes, mattocks and secateurs. There’ll be another event on Wednesday 4 July in the morning with the children of Llandovery College prep school when we’ll light the fire pit and cook over it as well as doing a nature survey. The orchard is a joint project of Llandovery College and Transition Tywi. To find the orchard turn up the lane past the level crossing that goes to the college sports ground. At the car park turn right onto the footpath through the double gate. A short way along there is a stile in the fence on the left. The baby orchard is in the unmown area between

We enlisted the help of World Horse Welfare and the RSPCA who also made enquiries and later seized all four ponies. Because of space restrictions at the Trust we were only able to make space for one of them, Beatrix, but the rest are

The seniors have started life in the South Wales Cricket Association Division Five in good spirits and despite their first game being called off due to weather, they have managed to win their next two quite comprehensively. Llanwrda were able to pick up their first win of the season at home against Cowbridge CC 2nd Xl on Saturday 5th May. Llanwrda won the toss and elected to field and bowled the away team out 06/18(3) for 78 with both Tom Thurtle and Sion Nicholas

picking up three wickets each. Llanwrda we’re 10/18(12) quick to win the game, getting the required 79 runs within 20 overs with captain Adrian Davies finishing 43 not out. A second win came against Llanwrda were home to Maesteg Celtic 2nd Xl. The home team won the toss and elected to field. This was a wise decision as the Llanwrda bowling attack were able to dismantle Maesteg for 75 all out, with Nigel Clarke taking three wickets and Will Thurtle taking two. Maesteg had a better bowling line up than their batting attack and Llanwrda were made to work to hit their target of 76. Adrian Davies hit 21 and Cerith Rees finished 22 N/O to win the game with 12 overs to spare. Llanwrda’s next home game will be against ‘A’ on Saturday 26/05 starting at 13:30. A recent study has shown that 3/4 of children spend less time outside than prison inmates, yet it has also been shown that outdoor learning can boost pupil development and have health benefits for both young and old. A growing body of evidence suggests that outdoor learning can boost children’s welfare and their performance at school. Talley school is creating an outdoor learning area within their grounds which will provide interesting opportunities for pupils in line with the curriculum. In promotion of this, to encourage people to spend time outside, and to raise funds for both causes - there will be a Scarecrow trail in Talley between Friday 29th June - Sunday 1st July 2018 to run concurrently with Taley & Cwmdu Open Gardens. We invite anyone who wishes to, to create a scarecrow based on Fairy Tales, Myths & Legends. To plan the trail, entry forms need to be in by 18th June 2018. Forms can be downloaded from Talley School Facebook page or Website. You do not have to live in the village to join in.

This is the 7th year in succession that artists throw open their doors and welcome the public into their studios for an annual celebration of …ART. Artists’ studios are unfailingly fascinating, some are elegant showrooms, others resemble a mad scientist’s lair, and others are homey communities where you feel love and inspiration almost immediately. And of course, there’s always checking out their cool stuff. All the artists are happy to talk to you about their work and are thrilled if you purchase it…please ask questions. Artists LOVE to talk about themselves – and their work. Don’t be shy, whatever you ask remember there is no such thing as a stupid question. They will bask in the glow of your interest and their genius. This is a fun free event. This is a unique opportunity to see artist’s studio, even after serious cleaning, is so different than seeing their work in an exhibition or
