The History of Star Trek
The History of Star Trek The original Star Trek was the brainchild of Gene Roddenberry (1921-1991), a US TV producer and scriptwriter. His idea was to make a TV series that combined the futuristic possibilities of science fiction with the drama and excitement of TV westerns (his original title for the series was ‘Wagon Train to the Stars’). Star Trek was first aired on American TV in 1966, and ran for three series. Each episode was a self-contained adventure/mystery, but they were all linked together by the premise of a gigantic spaceship, crewed by a diverse range of people, travelling about the galaxy on a five-year mission ‘to explore new life and new civilisations, to boldly go where no man has gone before’. Although not especially successful it attracted a loyal fan-base, partly male fans that liked the technological and special effects elements of the show. But the show also attracted a large number of female fans, many of whom were drawn to the complex interaction and dynamic between the three main characters, the charismatic but impetuous Captain Kirk (William Shatner), the crotchety old doctor McCoy (DeForest Kelley) and the coldly logical Vulcan science officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy). After the show was cancelled in 1969 the fans conducted a lengthy and ultimately successful campaign to resurrect the franchise. Roddenberry enjoyed success with several motion pictures, including Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979); action-thriller Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982); Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) and the more comic Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). -

Star Trek: My Brother's Keeper by Joe Haffner 1
Star Trek: My Brother’s Keeper by Joe Haffner Captain’s Log Stardate 5923.5, the Starship Enterprise is en route to Brannock Station – at Rigel VII - to pick up the new President of the United Federation of Planets – S’kol, and then take him to his home planet - Vulcan - for the upcoming inauguration ceremony. In addition to the Enterprise being ordered to escort the new President to the aforementioned political function, Starfleet Intelligence has informed us of a far more pressing issue in that one of our own may be using his position and resources to pursue a personal vendetta. Kirk turns off his log recorder, lifts his eyes above an ancient leather-bound hardback copy of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. While lifting his gaze from the dusty pages in his hands, his eyes fixate on his reflection in the mirror. He is astonished at the toll the five-year mission is taking on his appearance. “I have crows’ feet.” Jim mutters while touching his tired eyelids. His hair is starting to show more white and gray strands, betraying his youthful age of 36-years. Kirk puts his book down on the nightstand, gets out of his chair and pulls on the bottom of his gold tunic. “It’s too tight.” The Captain mutters, realizing the garment is much tighter than he remembered. Too many hours of over-indulging in drink and heavy meals and not enough time exercising. No doubt that would be Doctor McCoy’s diagnosis during the next medical physical. The Captain acknowledges that the uniform he is now wearing was measured to fit his body at a time when he was a few pounds lighter. -

Theteacher began a discussion of the nature of language, meaning and the significance of literacy by discussing an episode of STNG entitled "Darmok" in which an alien race spoke only in metaphor. Humor is present in many episodes of "Star Trek," as wellas concepts like the power of fear. Cultural differences are explored in a number of episodes of STNG. The teacher uses "Star Trek"as an introduction to a lesson and as an impetus for story writing. One of the most enduring qualities of the three series is their focuson problem solving, which can serve as demonstrations for students. The series are also used for teaching the technique of role playing. Episodes of STNG and of "Deep Space 9" can be used to teach contentareas such as English, mathematics, history, physics, chemistry, and biology: "Clues" involves an examination ofspace and time; "Drumhead" involves a Joe McCarthy-like investigator; "Cause and Effect" involves a time loop; "Time's Arrow," involving backward timetravel and Mark Twain; "Emissary" deals with guilt, responsibility, and explaining the nature of time to an immortal-ace; and "The Forsaken" which involves a "shape-shifting" character. -
Pocket TOS #08 -- Black Fire
Star Trek (TOS #08) – “Black Fire” Pocket Books | January 1983 Back Cover: When sabotage strikes the Enterprise, Spock's investigation leads him into an alliance with the Romulan and Klingon empires against the Tomarii, a bloodthirsty race for whom war is life itself. Spock is declared a traitor and sentenced to the Federation's highest-security prison, and Kirk must choose between friendship and duty, with dire consequences for himself, Spock, and the entire Federation if he's wrong. Summary: A massive explosion aboard the bridge of the Enterprise forces a destructive separation of the saucer section from the rest of the ship. The ensuing devastation kills three trainee crewmembers and injures much of the senior officers, including Kirk and Spock. Spock risks paralysis as a result of his injuries (a chunk of metal has pierced his spine) to take command and figure out exactly what happened, but the official inquiry seems to consider the whole affair an accident. To Spock, the cause appears to be sabotage, and through a bit of detective work, he with the help of Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott, discover a star map potentially left behind by the saboteur. Spock presents his findings to both Captain Kirk and Commodore Clark at Starfleet. However, Commodore Clark ignores the testimony and instead has Spock return to Sickbay where he can be treated. Spock refuses McCoy and goes in search of Scotty. Spock persuades Scotty to join him on his investigation and together they “borrow” a Federation AA Class cruiser - the USS Raven -- and head off for the area indicated – a previously undiscovered planet called Tomarii. -

Star Wars Versus Star Trek by Aj Herron
Herron 1 Aj Herron Instructor’s Name ENGL 1013 Date Star Wars Versus Star Trek Star Wars and Star Trek are both science based and involve space travel and aliens. The Star Trek television series was originally produced in 1966, and it influenced the 1977 beginning of the popular Star Wars films. In 1979, the first Star Trek movie was released. Star Wars and Star Trek movies have more or less the same setting or surroundings but have extremely different levels of on-screen conflict, unique recognizable characters, and slightly different genres. Star Wars movies all center around the conflict between the Rebel Alliance, who fight for their freedom, and the Galactic Empire, who fight to keep control. A child can identify this as a conflict between good and evil. Adults identify the sides of the conflict by their names: the Sith (evil) and the Jedi (good). Star Wars even color-codes these groups by their lightsabers, as if to highlight the ongoing conflict by labeling the good guys with green lightsabers and the bad guys with red lightsabers. These two powerful groups, the Sith and the Jedi, can even further be identified as the dark side and the light side. Without these conflicts, the Star Wars movies would essentially have no plot. On the other hand, Star Trek movies feature the conflict of a crew having to make moral decisions about various dilemmas. For example, they are put into situations in which they have to decide whether or not to protect the peace of others, stand against racism, and solve other political or ethical problems. -
