The British Crime Survey results were published last week for the period between October 2010 and the end of September 2011. It is official, with the lowest levels of reported violent crime of all the counties in the country, Wiltshire is (imagine very loud and impressive fanfare) ‘The safest County in the Country’. That’s it, job done; I’m off to put my feet up with a large mug of coffee and a slice of homemade carrot cake. Aren’t we all marvellous? The world is a fine place to be and we are in one of the best bits. Doesn’t it make you want to gambol naked through a meadow singing ‘We are the champions? No? Just me then. What does it actually mean? How can we interpret this news? Is it a blip in the figures? Well here’s my take on it. Wiltshire has always been there or there abouts when it comes to being the safest place to live in the country. A large rural county with a relatively low density, albeit growing, population. The Wiltshire police are one of the best performing forces in the country and now, officially, the population of Wiltshire is the best performing population! So there we are, pats on the back all round. Let’s all try to make sure that we stay at No1 for evermore! CONSULTING OUR COMMUNITIES. Your Neighbourhood Policing Team, that’s me, Will and Shona will be out and about in the Bourne and Wylye Valleys over the next couple of months knocking on doors to introduce ourselves and ask if there is anything that we can help you with. Police related of course, we’re not offering to wash your car, train your dog or help you decorate the spare room! Last week Will and I were in Wylye itself knocking on doors and we had a tremendously friendly response from you. Thank you, it does make it a much more pleasurable experience for us to be greeted by smiling faces. We have been asking for e-mail addresses from you so that we can communicate more easily. I promise that I will not bombard you with e-mails, just relevant and hopefully interesting tomes. We produce a very brief weekly update and this monthly bulletin, barring a need for an emergency communiqué that will be that. Sadly we are never going to get round to every house in the two valleys in the next two months so to help us with our ‘consultation process’ it would be great if you could drop us a quick e-mail with anything that you think we might be able to help you with. Please remember that we are here to help but we can’t do anything about something we are not aware of! INCIDENTS OF NOTE – JANUARY 2011.
