Homo Sapiens Ethicus Life, Death, Reincarnation and Ascension Part 3 of the Anthropology Series on the Hidden Origin of Homo Sapiens --daniel Introduction In order to understand how the created, Cro-Magnon man differs from other evolved life on our world, an investigation into the structure of life, itself, is a necessary prerequisite. Once the natural norm is defined, deviations from that norm can be investigated and consequences determined. This paper will cover two basic concepts, as energetic consequences: life and death, along with the evolution of these processes: reincarnation and ascension. Life, as a natural consequence of the postulates of the Reciprocal System, is covered in detail by Dewey Larson in his book, Beyond Space and Time.1 In hopes of defining the basic pattern of what causes natural death and what happens during, and after, the death of the physical body, the concepts of death, reincarnation and ascension are extrapolated from the core concepts of cultural mythology and theology, correlated to corresponding concepts in a framework of a universe of motion. This information can then be extrapolated to see where mankind, as a species, is heading. The pretext of this paper, based on the concepts proposed in Geochronology2 and New World Religion,3 is that Cro-Magnon man, from which modern man is a direct descendant, is a hybrid of the evolving life on the planet plus an “extra-terrestrial” or “divine” influence that was introduced by a species collectively referred to as the “SMs” that colonized the planet in ancient times, creating the Mu and Atlantean epochs.4 The progenitors of this hybrid species of man are commonly referred to as the Biblical Adam and Eve, so this hybrid approach is a mix between Darwinian views and theological ones—both are correct. -

You really can't beat tales of merciless Scandinavian pirate forays and bloody ninth-century clashes. To complement the evening's topic, one clubber is bringing mead. The dinner, of course, is meat cooked over fire. "Damp will be the weather, yet hot the pyre in my backyard," read the email invite, written by host Njall Mildew-Beard. That's Neal Stephenson, best-selling novelist, cult science fictionist, and literary channeler of the hacker mindset. For Stephenson, whose books mash up past, present, and future—and whose hotly awaited new work imagines an entire planet, with 7,000 years of its own history—the HBC is a way to mix background reading and socializing. "Neal was already doing the research," says computer graphics pioneer Alvy Ray Smith, who used to host the club until he moved from a house to a less convenient downtown apartment. "So why not read the books and talk about them, too?" With his shaved head and (mildewless) beard, Stephenson could cut something of an imposing figure. -

Book One introduced Daniel Waterhouse, a 17th century member of the English Royal Society. Both the college years and twilight years of Waterhouse’s life are covered in separate threads. Book Two follows the exploits of Half-Cocked Jack Shaftoe and his traveling companion Eliza, whom he liberated from the Turks at the Siege of Vienna.Book Three merges the characters of Books One and Two during the historical period covering the reigns of Charles II, James II, Louis XIV and William of Orange. This equates to the middle age of Daniel Waterhouse, a Puritan who is navigating the perilous religious landscape between the Protestant King Charles II and the Catholic King James II. Meanwhile Eliza shuttles between the Versailles court of Louis XIV and the Dutch Republic, acting as both financial manipulator and covert operative. R. 3000)1 In his 2002 tour de force essay on the Hispanic baroque Barroco, Fernando R. de la Flor introduces Juan de Borja’s emblem, Hominem te esse cogita (think that you are [only] a man), as evidence of a Hispanic counter-proposal to the Cartesian revolution, signaled by Descartes’s emblematic motto Cogito ergo sum (Fig. 1). The Spanish scholar’s lengthy dissertation on Spain’s contesta- tory relationship with European modernity deploys Borja’s emblem as a pro- lepsis for his hypothesis concerning a specifically Hispanic strategy for negoti- ating the modern marriage of (proto-)capitalism and political absolutism. The essay goes to great lengths to excavate what the author identifies as the subver- sive nihilism at the heart of Counter-Reformation efforts to close off the Span- ish empire from the progressive and instrumentalist thrust behind Descartes’s attempt to define and legitimize the individual subject’s encounter with, and analysis of, the real physical causes of the universe. R. de la Flor’s argument is dialectically anchored in his rejection of José Antonio Maravall’s more instrumentalist (Cartesian) definition of the Spanish baroque: “I believe that the peculiarity of this hispanic baroque culture resides, precisely, in what Maravall denies from the beginning: that is, in the manifest capacity of its expressive system to move in the opposite direction to any es- tablished ends” (Barroco 19). -

The second oldest--and most prestigious--awards in the field, they quickly were nicknamed the Hugos (officially since 1958), in honor of Hugo Gernsback (1884 -1967), founder of Amazing Stories, the first professional magazine devoted entirely to science fiction. No awards were given in 1954 at the World Science Fiction Con in San Francisco, but they were restored in 1955 at the Clevention (in Cleveland) and included six categories: novel, novelette, short story, magazine, artist, and fan magazine. -

Teaching the Conflicts Neal Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon and The Baroque Cycle Lee Barbrook Doctor of Philosophy Newcastle University May 2012 Abstract I read Neal Town Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon and The Baroque Cycle to interrogate what types of links they make to US countercultural writing, postmodern discourse in American culture, and perceived uninterrogated links to the term America itself in images of modern progressive liberalism. Postmodernist readings of literary texts came under increasing public scrutiny in intellectual debates of the 80s and 90s. My analysis is to situate and reconsider these fictions within debates happening in the North American academy at this time and the more recent one concerning the demise of poststructuralism in the humanities. Linking together works of Sean McCann, Michael Szalay, John Guillory and Mark McGurl I locate Cryptonomicon as constitutive of the postwar drift from the modernist aesthetic yet simultaneously developing within Sacvan Bercovitch’s model of dissensus. Through reference to McGurl’s work in particular, my thesis will offer the first sustained critical reading of Cryptonomicon relevant to the University’s new teaching standards of diversity and research excellence . Through Lauren Berlant’s concept of an intimate public I argue The Baroque Cycle develops a richly aesthetic form of criticism that challenges the consensus view of culturally affirming alternatives to American sociopolitical and economic life. In addition, each chapter charts specific aspects of the impact of European critical theories that presided over the marriage of intellectualism and professionalism in the North American academy. More specifically, and throwing particular focus on resistances to theory and canon change, I discuss how the politics of the classroom developed within the literary culture wars brought with it a renewed emphasis on what postwar professors taught in the classroom. -

Philosophers Recommend Science Fiction Eric Schwitzgebel Consider two possible views of the relationship between philosophy and science fiction. On the first view, science fiction simply illustrates, or makes more popularly accessible, what could be said as well or better in a discursive essay. Students who can’t stomach purely abstract discussions of the nature of time, for example, might be drawn into an exciting story; but mature philosophers can ignore such entertainments and proceed directly to the abstract arguments that are the meat of the philosophical enterprise. On the second view, science-fictional storytelling has philosophical merit in its own right that is not reducible to or replaceable by abstract argumentation. One cannot substitute for the other, and a diet of only one type of writing risks leaving you philosophically malnourished. One argument for the second view takes as a premise that examples and thought-experiments play an ineliminable role in philosophical thinking. If so, we might see the miniature examples and thought experiments in philosophical essays as midpoints on a continuum from purely abstract propositions on one end to novel-length narratives on the other. Whatever role short examples play in philosophical thinking, longer narratives might also potentially play a similar role. Perhaps entirely abstract prose leaves the imagination and the emotions hungry; well- drawn thought experiments engage them a bit; and films and novels engage them more fully, bringing with them whatever cognitive benefits (and risks) flow from vividly engaging the imagination and emotions. Ordinary literary fiction engages imaginative and emotive cognition about possibilities within the ordinary run of human experience; speculative fiction engages imaginative and emotive cognition about possibilities outside the ordinary run of human experience. -

LANGWITH A Thesis for the Degree of Doctorate of Philosophy University of St. Andrews 21 December 2006 ii ABSTRACT This study undertakes an examination of the representation of nature in works of literature that it regards as early British ‘mythopoeic fantasy’. By this term the thesis understands that fantasy fiction which is fundamentally concerned with myth or myth-making. It is the contention of the study that the connection of these works with myth or the idea of myth is integral to their presentation of nature. Specifically, this study identifies a connection between the idea of nature presented in these novels and the thought of the late-Victorian era regarding nature, primitivism, myth and the impulse behind mythopoesis. It is argued that this conceptual background is responsible for the notion of nature as a virtuous force of spiritual redemption in opposition to modernity and in particular to the dominant modern ideological model of scientific materialism. -

This assumption prevents Epic Fantasy works from achieving wide critical acceptance resulting in an under-analyzed and under-appreciated genre of literature. While some early works do follow the same narrative path as J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Epic Fantasy has long challenged and reworked these narratives and character tropes. That many works of Epic Fantasy choose replicate the patriarchal structures found in our world is disappointing, but it is not an inherent feature of the genre. -
