For a thousand years after the fall of the Roman Empire in the west, the Eastern or Byzantine Empire continued to build on ancient Greek and Roman tra- ditions and culture. For example, Byzantine architects used the Roman dome to build magnificent churches, such as Hagia Sophia in the Byzantine capital of Constantinople (now called Istanbul). Byzantine artists also created beautiful mosaics and icons. Students in Core Knowledge schools should have studied Hagia Sophia and Byzantine mosaics as part of the art curriculum for Grade 3. However, they may not be acquainted with icons, which are special pictures of Jesus, Mary, and the saints.

Would he have escaped to this very province? Instead of bringing peace and plenty to its people, would he have urged them to rebel against their rulers? Lin Cheng felt his pulse quicken a little.     NORTHUMBRIAN NUMISMATIC CHRONOLOGY IN THE NINTH CENTURY H. E. PAGAN THE subject of this paper is the coinage struck in Northumbria in. the ninth centuiy by the kings of Northumbria and by the archbishops of York.1 'The coins are nominally described as sceattas if their appearance is silvery and as stycas if they are predominantly copper. They will be familiar to most numismatists. What I propose to do is to review the coinage as a whole and offer a scheme for a major redating of most of the coins. It may be reassuring to know that the proposal though drastic is not altogether revolu- tionary. The circumstances are peculiar. In an article published in the British Numis- matic Journal thirteen years ago2 Mr. C. S. S. Lyon arranged the coins in their proper chronological order and estabhshed with reasonable accuracy the period of time for which each king and archbishop struck. It would be reasonable to suppose that this would make a substantial redating of the coinage impossible. In fact foe a variety of reasons it does not. Without rejecting any of Mr. Lyon's mam coacfarions it will fee possible to adopt a scheme of dating that looks very different from the scheme which has been accepted until now; and this is the course of actionforwhiAIshaiteaigBiBg. An initial difficulty of any discussion of the problems involved is that this is a mkagp that for one reason or another people do not take very seriously.     Introduction The Practice of Christianity in Byzantium Derek Krueger In sixth-century Palestine, a circle of women gathered to weave curtains for two monasteries in the Judean desert. In the seventh century, a merchant from the island of Chios spent three months living and sleeping at the shrine of Saint Artemios in Constantinople waiting for the saint to heal his hernia. In eighth-century Constantinople, young mothers routinely adorned their babies with amulets to protect them from demons.1 In the twelfth century, in a small church in the Peloponnese, villagers attended liturgical services surrounded by life-size images of the saints; in another church, in the mountains of Cyprus, colorful scenes of major events in the lives of Christ and the Virgin, painted throughout the church, enveloped congregants in the world of the Bible. In fifteenth-century Thessalonica, mourners marked the third, ninth, and fortieth day after a family member’s death by bringing offerings of boiled wheat with nuts and raisins to the parish church.2 Such acts shaped lay Christianity in Byzantium. This volume of A People’s History of Christianity, dedicated to Byzantine Christianity, explores the practices of lay Christians during the eleven centuries between the foundation of the city of Constantinople in 324 and its fall to the Ottoman Turks in 1453. Lasting from late antiquity to the threshold of the early modern period, the Byzantine Empire began as the eastern half of the Roman Empire and ended as a small medieval state. In the intervening centuries, Byzantine Christianity developed as a distinct system of religious practice and devotion, different from the medieval Roman 2 Catholicism emerging simultaneously farther west.

The hijra (lit. “migra- tion”) of the prophet Muhammad in 622 a.d. from Mecca to Medina became the blueprint for all later migration.1 During the Arab conquests of the 7th and early 8th centuries, Arab tribes migrated and settled in all parts of the new empire as a military and political elite separated by religion from non-Muslim population majorities.2 Another phenomenon was a long-distance trade with networks of traders traveling over the Silk Road and the Indian Ocean, the pro- verbial Sindbad being but a representative for many real ones.3 Thirdly, there was a zest for learning in Islamic culture, which is summarized by a famous saying of the prophet Muhammad (“seek knowledge even as far as China!”).4 Migration between the urban intellectual centres of North Africa and the Mid- dle East was a prevalent phenomenon during the whole era of pre-modern Is- lam, and celebrities such as Ibn Khaldun of Ibn Battuta (both 14th century) are only two examples out of many. Finally, there is the obligation for every Mus- lim to undertake the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina at least once in a life- time, which caused the regular movement of many pilgrims on an annual basis through all parts of the Muslim world.5 1 A variant understanding of the word hijra in the sense of “conversion to Islam”, as is used by e.g.
