DE CARPENTIER ALLIED ANCESTRY In the copy of the de Carpentier genealogy received from the late Joncheer Coenen van's- Gravesloot it was mentioned that Pieter de Carpentier, first generation of the family, re ceived from the Prince de Chimay a grant of arms, de gu. atrois eperons d'or, lamoletteenbas. Crest, un lion iss., and also that he was Governor to the Prince de Chimay. Dictionnaire de la Noblesse, Croy, states that Charles de Croy was created Prince de- Chimay by Emperor Maximilien I in 1486 and Chevalier of the Order of the Golden Fleece; that he held the Emperor Charles V at the baptismal font, to whom he gave his name, and was his Governor or Tutor; that he died r r September, 152 7, having married Louise d'Albret, eldest sister of the King of Navarre. Jean le Carpentier in his Histo£re de Cambray, Vol. I, pages 411-413, says that Charles de Croy, the said Prince de Chimay, by the said Louise d' Albret, had as eldest daughter Anne de Croy, Princess de Chimay, Dame d'Avesnes, who married her cousin Philippes, Sire de Croy, first Duke d' Aerschot, Marquis de Renty, Comte de Beaumont, by whom she had Charles de Croy, Duked' Aerschot, Prince de Chimay, etc. 6 DE CARPENTIER It was from the grandfather of the latter, therefore, that Pieter de Carpentier received the grant of arms but it was the grandson to whom he was Governor or Tutor. Jean de Carpentier, son of aforesaid Pieter de Carpentier, married Isabelle de Villers, daughter of Jean de Villers, the younger, and M~rie van Myseele, his wife, and their descend ants bore the de Carpentier arms quarterly wit~ the de Villers, sable a dix losanges d'or accolees et aboutees, 3, 3, 3 et I. Crest, un vol d' or et d' arg. which arms are referred to in the account of the de Villers family (ped. 2). Rietstap's Armorial Register describes the arms as follows: Carpentier (de), Dordrecht. An illustration of these arms is given in Beschryvinge der Stad Dordrecht, by Matthys Balen, Dordrecht, 1677, page 1305. Several illustrations also appear in two large folio pages entitled ''Namen en wapen der ed: agtbarre heeren oud raden ofte vroedschappen der Stad Dordrecht. The arms are illustrated of "Pieter de Carpentier, Roelandsz," "Mr. Roeland de Carpentier, Roelandsz, ob. 1687." An ancient painting of the arms on metal is also preserved at the Museum of Dordrecht, with paintings of other arms relating to the de Carpentier family. In all the foregoing illustrations the de Villers arms are placed in r and 4 quarters and the de Carpentier are placed in 2 and 3 quarters. Possibly, prominence was given to the de Villers arms on account of their distinction. Old seals of the de Carpentier family, attached to documents, were quartered in the same manner. Later the arms have been borne with de Carpentier placed in quarters r and 4 and de Villers in 2 and 3. Jean le Carpentier in his Histoire de Cambray gives a history of the de Carpentier family which is quoted in the Introduction of the Genealogy of the de Carpentier Family by the writer, in which he states that the family descended from Roger, Sire de Gouy, mentioned in 1096 at the Tournament of Auchin, from whom descended Barthelemy and Renaud Carpentier, and that Siger and Godefroy Carpentier descended from the said Renaud and were held in high esteem in Cambray and adjacent parts about 1200. A genealogy of the said Siger's descendants is given in Archives de la Noblesse de France, by l\L Laine, Paris, 1828, Vol. XI. In this work it is stated that the ancient arms of the family were d'azur, au chevron d'or, accompagne de 3 croissants d' argent. Jean le Carpentier, in the aforesaid article concerning the de Carpentier family, says that descendants of Godefroy de Carpentier, Sire de Daniel and d' Avesnes-les-Obert, bene factor of the Abbey of Vaucelles according to a deed of r 2 80, and brother of aforesaid Siger, left for England and Holland, where they bear different arms, al though descended from the same house which recognized as its founders the ancient and illustrious Seigneurs de Gouy or Goy who vvere so renowned in the archives of the Abbeys of St. Vaast d'Arras, Mont St. Eloy, Honnecourt, Mont St. Martin, etc., since the year 1036. JAN DE CARPENTIER Born at Sandwich, June 8, 1577, and his family. Extracted from his family register. REGISTER OF OUR FAMILY AND DESCENT.* PIETER DE CARPENTIER, born in 1488, t . married, first, CATHARINA GoDTSCHALCK and resided at Messines,t West Flanders. He married, second, MARIE v AN M YSEELE, widow of Jean de Villers, the younger, and· daughter of Philips van Myseele and l\1arie, his wife. Children by first marriage: r. JAN DE CARPENTIER, my grandfather, born at Messines in Flanders August 15, 1511, died at Ypres December 14, 1580, old style, and was buried at St. Marten's Church. Dame ISABELLA DE VILERS, my grandmother, his wife, died ·· at Middelburg September 15, 1584, and was buried at St. Peter's Church at the age of 72 years, new style. * This manuscript was published by Jhr. Dr. W. A. Beelaerts van Blokland of the Hague, Holland, in Nederlandsche Leeuw in 1926, published by the "Genealogisch-Heraldisch Genootschap'' ( Genealogical-Heraldic Society). The latest date mentioned by Jan de Carpentier is 1654, consequently he must have written or completed his article in that year when he would have been 77 years of age. His account agrees with the Genealogy of the de Carpentier Family by the writer. tin the Genealogy of the de Carpentier Family, by the writer, it was incorrectly stated that Pieter de Carpentier had married his first wife in 1488, whereas that was the date of his birth, consequently he could not have been Treasurer of l\1essines 1507 or 1508. tFiemish l\!Ieesen, English l\!Iessines, is a town of Belgium in West Flanders, 6 miles south of Ypres. §Greffier was a Recorder of a city or town. • Heritage at Risk Register
CASTLE HOWARD MAUSOLEUM Castle Howard Estate, Ryedale, North Yorkshire The Mausoleum, by Hawksmoor, 1729-42, and modelled on the tomb of Metella, is a major feature of the Howardian Hills. Situated on a bluff east of Castle Howard. The columns were repaired with a grant in the 1980s. The entablature and bastions continue to decay. Much of the damage is due to rusting cramps. The staircase balustrade is collapsing. 304 HERITAGE AT RISK YORKSHIRE & THE HUMBER 305 Y&H HERITAGE AT RISK 2008 Of the 176 entries on the baseline 1999 Yorkshire and the Humber buildings at risk register, 91(52%) have now been removed. Although this is 6% higher than the regional average for 2008, our rate of progress is slowing. Of the five entries removed this year, only one was on the 1999 register. This is because the core of buildings remaining from the 1999 register are either scheduled monuments with no obvious use, or buildings with a problematic future that require a strategic re-think to provide a viable solution. Despite these problems, we are continuing to work with owners, local authorities, trusts and other funding bodies to try to secure the long-term future of these buildings and structures. Just over half (52%) of the regional grants budget (almost £500,000) was offered to eleven buildings at risk in the last financial year. There are four new entries this year: in North Yorkshire, St Leonard’s Church at Sand Hutton, and in West Yorkshire, Hopton Congregational Church in Mirfield,Westwood Mills at Linthwaite, and Stank Hall near Leeds. This gives a total of 122 Grade I and II* listed buildings and scheduled monuments at risk entries on the Yorkshire and the Humber register.

Castle Studies Group Bibliography No. 23 2010 CASTLE STUDIES: RECENT PUBLICATIONS – 23 (2010) By John R. Kenyon Introduction This is advance notice that I plan to take the recent publications compilation to a quarter century and then call it a day, as I mentioned at the AGM in Taunton last April. So, two more issues after this one! After that, it may be that I will pass on details of major books and articles for a mention in the Journal or Bulletin, but I think that twenty-five issues is a good milestone to reach, and to draw this service to members to a close, or possibly hand on the reins, if there is anyone out there! No sooner had I sent the corrected proof of last year’s Bibliography to Peter Burton when a number of Irish items appeared in print. These included material in Archaeology Ireland, the visitors’ guide to castles in that country, and then the book on Dublin from Four Court Press, a collection of essays in honour of Howard Clarke, which includes an essay on Dublin Castle. At the same time, I noted that a book on medieval travel had a paper by David Kennett on Caister Castle and the transport of brick, and this in turn led me to a paper, published in 2005, that has gone into Part B, Alasdair Hawkyard’s important piece on Caister. Wayne Cocroft of English Heritage contacted me in July 2009, and I quote: - “I have just received the latest CSG Bibliography, which has prompted me to draw the EH internal report series to your attention.

  • Histoires De Famine. La Patente Au Moyen Age
Histoires de famine. La patente au Moyen Age Collection dirigee par Martin Aurell 4 Plantageriets et Capetiens: confrontations et heritages EDITE PAR MARTIN AURELL ET NOEL-YVES TONNERRE BREPOLS '\ I " )_:_ Lj Patronage, Politics and Piety in the Charters of Eleanor of Aquitaine Nicholas VINCENT In 1959, H.G. Richardson wrote that Eleanor of Aquitaine 'has been less than happy in her biographers", Even in Richardson's day, this was something of an understatement, since Eleanor has in fact inspired some of the very worst historical writing devoted to the European Middle Ages. Adopted as a figurehead by literary romantics and more recently by feminist historians, the Eleanor of history has been overshadowed by an Eleanor of wishful-thinking and make-believe. The tone here is set by Amy Kelly's biography, first published in 1950. Attempting to enter the mind-set of her heroine after the manner of Sir Walter Scott, Kelly conjures up a fantasy world of courtly love, fair damsels and daring deeds. 'The highhearted Plan- tagenets are marble still. The dusty sunlight falls softly where they sleep', Kelly concludes, in fine pre-Raphaelite mode but with about as much understanding of optical physics as of the reality of twelfth-century kingship". Even the most sober and distinguished of scholars, some of them far too distinguished to cite here by name, have been tempted to tread in Kelly's footsteps. On the one hand they admit that very little is or can be known of Eleanor's personality or daily life. On the other hand, and in direct contradiction of the admitted facts, they then pile conjecture upon conjecture in pursuit of an Eleanor whom even the novelists amongst us might find unduly fantasmagorical.

  • The Wilted Lily Representations of the Greater Capetian Dynasty Within the Vernacular Tradition of Saint-Denis, 1274-1464
THE WILTED LILY REPRESENTATIONS OF THE GREATER CAPETIAN DYNASTY WITHIN THE VERNACULAR TRADITION OF SAINT-DENIS, 1274-1464 by Derek R. Whaley A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History at the University of Canterbury, 2017. ABSTRACT Much has been written about representations of kingship and regnal au- thority in the French vernacular chronicles popularly known as Les grandes chroniques de France, first composed at the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Denis in 1274 by the monk Primat. However, historians have ignored the fact that Primat intended his work to be a miroir for the princes—a didactic guidebook from which cadets of the Capetian royal family of France could learn good governance and morality. This study intends to correct this oversight by analysing the ways in which the chroniclers Guillaume de Nangis, Richard Lescot, Pierre d’Orgemont, Jean Juvénal des Ursins, and Jean Chartier constructed moral character arcs for many of the members of the Capetian family in their continua- tions to Primat’s text. This thesis is organised into case studies that fol- low the storylines of various cadets from their introduction in the narrative to their departure. Each cadet is analysed in isolation to deter- mine how the continuators portrayed them and what moral themes their depictions supported, if any. Together, these cases prove that the chron- iclers carefully crafted their narratives to serve as miroirs, but also that their overarching goals shifted in response to the growing political cri- ses caused by the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) and the Armagnac- Burgundian civil war (1405-1435).
