feature >>> KEN NEWTON REPORTS The mechanic of Birdsville Birdsville is famous for its race day. If you saw the Birdsville Race Track between events, you wouldn’t bother taking the lens cap off the camera. It’s a pleasant enough little town, as outback towns go, but step just a few paces in any direction and you are in extreme isolation. This is the Australian outback, on the edge of the Simpson Desert. This is not a tourist destination for amateurs. The famed Birdsville Track is more of a six-lane gibber highway in parts than a track, but the moment you veer away from it, you’re on your own. There’s a big signpost outside the Birdsville police station warning anyone thinking of heading west into the Simpson to check in first, and if you are a foreign tourist, you must phone your embassy. If a rescue is mounted, it can cost anything up to $8,000 or so to drag a crippled vehicle and its occupants out of the desert. The sand tracks which radiate out to the Simpson Desert beyond Birdsville attract the unwary: the blowhard from the city with his fancy four wheel drive who thinks his fifty grand’s worth of technology will get him anywhere. ‘ He’s rescued quite a few vehicles with this machine. If it wasn’t at Birdsville, there’d be a few rusting hulks on the desert landscape.’ Tell that to Peter Barnes, a laconic “seen it all” mechanic, who with his wife Bronwynne runs Birdsville’s first and only garage and repair centre. -

EVANESCENT, OSCILLATING, NEVER QUITE SETTLED UPON: THE OUTBACK AS CULTURAL MIRAGE DeaneFergie NAIDOC Day! 1988 was a day of dramatic symbolism and action tbrougbout Austtalia. In towns and cities across the nation Aboriginal people massed to demonsuate tbe unsettling ambiguity of State recognition in the year declared to celebrate a Bic:enrenary ofthe European occupation of lhecontinent. In the tiny outback town of Marree it was also a day of bigb drama. In lhe morning the Aboriginal flag was raised. without fanfare, on the town's flag pole. Someone soon replaced it with the Australian flag. Later the two flags were flown together-at first with the Austtalian flag uppennost, later with the ordering reversed. This battle for sovereignty continued throughout the day as the flags were raised and lowered and re-strung in innovative combinations. Another 'flag incident' was raised on the global arena in 1994. Cathy Freeman, Aboriginal winner, gave identity and ambiguous sovereignty another runfor its money at the Coounoowealth Games. None of us can claim to have traversed the length and breadth of our homeland, nor to have seen it all with our own eyes. -

Art/Research International: A Transdisciplinary Journal Volume 4 Issue 2, 2019 SAILING INTO AUSTRALIAN SETTLER FICTIONS: REFLECTION ON AN INQUIRY AND CONSTRUCTION WITH PERFORMANCE AND IMAGES Paul Reader Independent artist-performer [email protected] Paul Reader is an independent artist-performer, also a former Senior Research Fellow in Contextual Studies at the University of New England, Armidale, Australia. His career has spanned visual research, the community arts and community development with neighbourhood centres, environment groups and remote communities for over 30 years. Since 2014 he has worked closely with the Ardugula Aboriginal Corporation and Dunjiba Community Council at Oodnadatta, South Australia, resuming a connection to the community and country with which he first worked in the 1980s. Abstract: This is reflection on artistic inquiry as an expedition, construction and modification of a watercraft, where image-making occurs en route. The journey is from the Queensland Gold Coast to the fringes of the Simpson Desert, undertaken in May-June 2018. The place of boats in Australian inland exploration is considered. The author-artist situates performance/art-making as a post-structural practice. Research or inquiry is seen partly as a self-realization occurring after the process has already begun. The origins of the craft and the expedition are also described. From the images the artist imagines the search for Burke and Wills, the lost explorers, as it might be conducted by boat. Encounters with ‘Grey Nomads’ are considered. An inland sea is discovered, and the existence of the Peoples Republic of Wangkangurra imaginatively arises in the vacated fringes of the Simpson Desert. -
