Neal Shapiro, President and CEO of WNET.ORG, spoke with THIRTEEN about this unique collaboration between two of the city’s leading cultural institutions. thirteen.org 1 ThiRTEEN has enjoyed a successful relationship with 1 Lincoln Center for many years with productions like Great Performances and Live From Lincoln Center. What inspired you to take this partnership to a deeper level? WE needed morE Space for our new productions. Lincoln Center immediately came to mind because it’s the center of arts and culture and we have a great relationship with them since we’ve worked together on many productions over the years. i believe the Mayor said this is the first time two non-profits in the city have willingly come together. So this is not only an exciting partnership, it’s an historic one. • The Multimodal Kitchen: Cookbooks As Women's Rhetorical Practice
THE MULTIMODAL KITCHEN: COOKBOOKS AS WOMEN'S RHETORICAL PRACTICE Elizabeth J. Fleitz A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2009 Committee: Sue Carter Wood, Advisor Allie L. Terry Graduate Faculty Representative Kristine L. Blair Richard C. Gebhardt Lucy L. Long ii ABSTRACT Sue Carter Wood, Advisor This study positions cookbooks and their associated discourse as rhetorical, relevant to the field and worthy of scholarly study. I argue that cookbooks are more than a simple collection of recipes; the ways in which the texts construct and are constructed by society establish their significance as rhetorical texts. As women have been historically silenced and prevented from using dominant communicative methods, they have needed to develop alternative practices. Naming cooking as a women’s discourse created out of these alternative practices, I argue this form of communication constructed for women and by women has a powerful rhetorical impact which establishes women as experts within their own (private) sphere. This discourse not only enables women to value their own existence but it also gives them a space in which to perform rhetoric, in effect constructing a feminist practice. This analysis is based on synthesis between Certeau’s concept of “making do” and multimodal practice, as I argue cookery discourse is inherently multimodal. I develop my argument exploring what I identify as the major modes used in the discourse: social, visual, and performative. As my project works to extend theories of multimodality, making the concept more widely applicable in rhetorical scholarship, it also furthers work begun by Bizzell, Glenn, and others concerning the limited representation of women in the rhetorical canon, and aids in the rewriting of rhetorical history as women’s stories continue to be added.

RED FLAG ALERT UNTIL 4:00 pm SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2008 Week Ending Friday, November 14, 2008 Volume 2 No. 43 To Those Whom Honor Is Due Low Humidity - High Temps - Winds Local Hero Shares Moving Story At Fires Rage Throughout So. Cal. Veterans Day Memorial Ceremony Late Breaking News: Red Flag Warning Extended Through Weekend Strong Santa Ana Winds and single digit humidity have caused an explosion of fires in Southern California. At press time, fires were raging in Montecito (Santa Barbara area), Sylmar, Knollwood, Corona/Yorba Linda and Palos Verdes. The damage has been extensive in the Montecito fire and as many as 600 homes were destroyed overnight in the Sylmar area. Wind, smoke and flames caused closure of parts of the 210, 101, 118, and 405 freeways. Sierra Madre’s EOS 281 was dispatched to the Prado Dam area (Corona). Four volunteer firefighters, including Officer Todd Conrad were the first unit to leave the city in a joint effort to assist with the onslaught of fires. The National Weather Service extended the Red Flag Warning for Los Angeles and Ventura Counties until Sunday afternoon and may issue extended warnings as the heat and winds continue. Fires have been fueled by the winds which send flaming embers into nearby homes. A Red Flag Warning is a warning issued by the United States National Weather Service to inform area fire fighting and land management agencies that conditions are ideal for brush fire ignition and propagation. When humidity is low, especially with the Santa Ana winds blowing, the Red Flag Warning also notifies the public of the high fire danger.

  • Cultural Daily Independent Voices, New Perspectives
1 Cultural Daily Independent Voices, New Perspectives Public Television Distribution for Documentaries: A Roadmap Through the Maze Lisa Bowers · Thursday, August 27th, 2015 The Public Television Maze You’ve produced a documentary that people tell you is perfect for public television. You want as many people as possible to watch the program or series that has kept you up at night, dwindled your bank account, and been a labor of love for you can’t remember how long. What do you do? Many distribution outlets exist, from ACORN/BBC to international distributors like Global Eagle Entertainment to commercial broadcasters. And don’t forget the new favorites in town – the Netflix’s, Hulu’s, and Vimeo’s of the online viewing world, which have opened up a world of possibilities to filmmakers. However, a national television event on public television remains a great place to get potentially millions of eyeballs watching your program. It also offers a credibility, reach, and public trust that remains unique. Many people refer to anything that airs on their local public television station as a “PBS program.” But that’s not really the case, although PBS is the mother lode of distributors of public television programming and refers to itself as “America’s largest public media enterprise.” Public television has member stations but not all stations are members of PBS or other membership organizations like NETA. In fact, LA-based KCET, a charter member of PBS, is not a member and thus, does not receive many popular PBS shows. As Andrew Walworth, a veteran producer andGrace Creek Media President, shares, “the wonderful thing for producers about public television is that there is no single gatekeeper – there are all these points of entry, perhaps 50 to 100 program managers who will decide whether your program is broadcast-ready.

At Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Balaban was senior vice president and publisher of Everyday Food magazine, for which she designed, sold and executed cross-media programs that included Stewart’s syndicated TV show and Everyday Food’s PBS programming. Before moving to that role, she was sales director at Martha Stewart Living. “Bringing in someone with Anne’s experience is a smart step for JustAPinch.com as we move toward taking our site to a new level in terms of revenue growth and partnership opportunities,” said Dan Hammond, chairman, president and CEO of the company, based in suburban Nashville.
