Bill Moyers’ Final Broadcast

This month marks the grand opening of WNET.ORG’s new studios at Lincoln Center. The street- level, glass-walled production facility and broadcast studio, located at the corner of 66th Street and Broadway, will be home to SundayArts, Need to Know and other productions and events. Neal Shapiro, President and CEO of WNET.ORG, spoke with THIRTEEN about this unique collaboration between two of the city’s leading cultural institutions. thirteen.org 1

THIRTEEN has enjoyed a successful relationship with 1 Lincoln Center for many years with productions like and . What inspired you to take this partnership to a deeper level?

We needed more space for our new productions. Lincoln Center immediately came to mind because it’s the center of arts and culture and we have a great relationship with them since we’ve worked together on many productions over the years. I believe the Mayor said this is the first time two non-profits in the city have willingly come together. So this is not only an exciting partnership, it’s an historic one.

What are Need to Know, our new weekly primetime current 2 some of the affairs series premiering in May, has its first rehearsal at programs that will the studios this month. But the ultimate goal is to produce all our shows there, from arts and culture be produced at programs like Reel 13 and SundayArts, to public affairs the studios? programs like Metrofocus. We’ll also tape all of our membership drives there, as well as local shows and specials produced by THIRTEEN and WLIW21.

What’s the It will give us greater visibility and help us 3 most exciting engage with the community in dynamic new ways. thing about There’s something really wonderful about being at the crossroads of arts and culture, where hundreds of THIRTEEN’s new thousands of people will see us as they walk by and home at Lincoln millions more will see us on TV. And the glass design Center? of the studio is no accident. It allows people on the street to watch shows being taped and it’s a metaphor for what public television needs to do. It’s our job to make sure the community can see what we’re doing and we can see what the community expects of us. We want people to see what we do and how we do it. That’s part of who we are.
